Subdued Lebanon Liberation Day celebrations under new Israeli occupation | Israel attacks Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon – On May 25, 2000, the last Israeli troops withdrew from southern Lebanon ending their 18-year occupation. This expulsion of Israeli forces by an armed movement led by Hezbollah has been a cause of national celebration in Lebanon ever since, but this year, a new occupation in the south has dampened the mood. “Liberation Day is a sacred day for us,” Ali Saleh, 55, from Jwaya in southern Lebanon told Al Jazeera. “It is a holiday of victory, pride and dignity.” Saleh said he would spend this Liberation Day at the Camille Chamoun Stadium on the southern periphery of Beirut, where he has lived with his wife and son after being displaced in March, when Israeli forces again invaded the south. He is one of more than 1.2 million people in Lebanon who have been displaced from their homes, predominantly from south Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs, since then. In the past two years, Lebanon has been invaded twice by Israel. In early 2025, more than two months after a ceasefire was agreed, …

The Yoga School of Philosophy That Sought Liberation From Suffering

The Yoga School of Philosophy That Sought Liberation From Suffering

Summary Philosophical Yoga is the cessation of the mind’s fluctuations, aiming to calm restless thoughts for ultimate clarity. It distinguishes between pure consciousness (puruṣa) and matter (prakṛti) to explain the root of human suffering. Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras codified Yoga as a formal school of Indian philosophy around the 3rd-4th century AD. The Eightfold Path (aṣṭāṅga yoga) is a structured guide from moral discipline and postures to deep meditative absorption. Yoga’s view of consciousness parallels modern philosophy’s “hard problem,” exploring how subjective awareness arises in a physical world. Show more   In the West, “yoga” is synonymous with fitness studios, wellness retreats, and mindfulness apps. However, in this article, we will cover Yoga as one of the six classical schools, or darśanas, of Indian philosophy. Closely allied with Sāṃkhya, it shares much of its metaphysical framework while adding a program of practice. Within this darśana, the human mind was seen as restless and constantly spinning with thoughts, until it was calmed through disciplined meditative and physical practice, allowing puruṣa to shine forth in its pure form. Liberation from suffering and the vicious cycle of birth, …

Ugly 3Y Auction Tails Most Since Liberation Day, Bid to Cover Slides

Ugly 3Y Auction Tails Most Since Liberation Day, Bid to Cover Slides

Not that anyone will care much in light of the Iran-related news barrage hitting every second, but moments ago the US sold $58BN in 3Y paper in what was a rather ugly auction. Let’s take a quick look. In the week’s first coupon auction, the US sold $58BN in 3Y notes, at a high yield of 3.579%, up from 3.518% last month but in line with auctions since last August. The problem is that the auction tailed the When Issued 3.58% by 1.1bps, the first tail since August and the biggest tail since Liberation Day.  The bid to cover was 2.546, down from 2.624 and the lowest since August.  The internals were also mediocre at best: Indirects were awarded 59.8% as foreign demand was still there but at a subdued pace: the six auction average if 64.3%. And with Directs taking 20.7%, or on the low end of the recent average of 25.3%, Dealers were left holding a sizable 19.5%, the highest since April.  Overall, this was a subpar, disappointing auction which however could be …

Snap Insight: There’s no liberation from Trump’s tariffs, even after court ruling

Snap Insight: There’s no liberation from Trump’s tariffs, even after court ruling

At the start of his administration in January 2025, Mr Trump imposed tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China over what he claimed was an economic emergency caused by imports of fentanyl. He then used the same economic emergency justification in April when he tariffed the whole world over trade imbalances. The justices in the majority were categorical in their rejection of the administration’s legal arguments. Tariffs remain the preserve of the legislative branch. Congress did not, the court ruled, intend to allow the president unlimited power to declare emergencies or to impose tariffs under IEEPA. Not all the tariffs collected on arriving goods fall under IEEPA. Tariff duties will remain in effect for products covered by Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act that concerns national security threats and by Section 301 of the Trade Act for unfair trade practices.  The Trump administration is likely to expand coverage of goods under these alternative legal statutes, but these are more restrictive.  The immediate response by the White House has been to issue a new Executive Order …
