Supreme Court allows Trump administration to lift deportation protections for Haitians, Syrians

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Trump administration to end legal protections for migrants fleeing violence and natural disaster in Haiti and Syria, exposing hundreds of thousands more people to potential deportation. The 6-3 decision overturns lower court orders and allows the Department of Homeland Security to swiftly end temporary protected status, a programme that protects a total of 1.3 million people from 17 countries. The Trump administration argued that judges can’t second-guess immigration officials’ decisions about the protections, which were intended to be temporary. Immigration attorneys said the countries remain unsafe to return, and the administration ended them in an unlawfully hasty process tinged by racial animus. During his 2024 presidential campaign, US President Donald Trump amplified false rumours that Haitian immigrants were abducting and eating dogs and cats. The one change that worked: I saw a woman lift 100kg and decided: ‘I want to do that!’ | Life and style

The one change that worked: I saw a woman lift 100kg and decided: ‘I want to do that!’ | Life and style

It’s fair to say I don’t come from a long line of athletes. When I was growing up in the 1990s, sport was something other people did; we were not a family who cycled, much less jogged. In PE I was the wheezing child hiding behind the bins, pretending I’d twisted an ankle. When I contemplated working out – not often – I had the vague idea it was supposed to turn my body into something other people might find attractive. I evolved from an unsporty child into an unsporty adult. Occasionally, mostly in an attempt to lose weight without having to stop eating croissants, I would attempt something like Couch to 5K, which I’d either abandon after a couple of sessions or see through to the bitter end out of the perverse determination to prove I’d been right all along: exercise was a mug’s game and endorphins an invention of Big Wellness. Then came children. A large-headed baby delivered two weeks late via C-section was not all that kind on the body. My back, …

Cyber Leaders Urge US to Lift Curbs on Anthropic’s Security Models

Cyber Leaders Urge US to Lift Curbs on Anthropic’s Security Models

June 15 (Reuters) – Cybersecurity leaders at major U.S. firms, including Nvidia and Adobe, have asked the Trump administration to lift restrictions on Anthropic’s most powerful AI models, arguing that the bans hamper efforts to prevent the spread of digital attacks. The letter follows Washington’s decision on Friday ordering Anthropic to suspend access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models ‌for any foreign nationals over national security ‌concerns. After previously warning about the hacking capabilities of its Mythos model and withholding it from wide release to prevent potential harm, Anthropic last week released a public version called Fable with what it described as cybersecurity safeguards. The curbs that Washington has now placed on the technology will limit the cybersecurity industry’s ability to find and fix software flaws at a time when other AI tools are making it easier for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities, according to a letter on Sunday signed by more than 50 security leaders. The letter said Anthropic’s models were not uniquely capable of finding security flaws and weaponizing exploits, with rival …

Proposed deal would reopen Hormuz strait and lift oil sanctions: Iran state media

Proposed deal would reopen Hormuz strait and lift oil sanctions: Iran state media

The U.S. and Iran could reportedly sign a peace deal as soon as Sunday, after Iranian state media said the draft deal included a commitment from the U.S. to lift oil sanctions and a pledge from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days. The 14-point document dictates that final negotiations will not begin until the release of half of Iran’s frozen funds, the suspension of Iran’s oil sanctions and the lifting of the naval blockade, the Mehr News Agency reported. All American forces would need to withdraw from Iran, and the U.S. and its allies would need to present reconstruction plans for Iran worth at least $300 billion, according to the report. A peace deal could be signed in Switzerland as soon as Sunday, Bloomberg reported later on Friday, citing people familiar with the plans. It comes as world leaders gather for the G7 summit, which runs from June 15 to June 17 in Evian, in the French Alps. The time and place of the meeting, are “media speculations” and an official …

ING bets on subscription model to lift fees amid growing digital-banking competition

ING bets on subscription model to lift fees amid growing digital-banking competition

June 10 : ING launched a new subscription-based banking model for clients in the Netherlands on Wednesday, in a move aimed at diversifying income streams and protecting its market share. The Dutch-based bank expects the model, which is to be rolled out across its markets by mid-2027, to deliver a “meaningful” contribution to its fee income, Global Head for Private Individuals Sali Salieski told Reuters. Salieski said the strategy was partly driven by growing competition from digital-only neobanks. Rapidly expanding Revolut, for instance, is reportedly considering an initial public offering that could value it at up to $200 billion. The model would replace pay-per-product banking with tiered monthly subscriptions that bundle banking, insurance and other services such as streaming into a single package. The model has previously been rolled out in Belgium, Romania and Poland. Salieski said the rest of ING’s markets, including Spain, Germany and Italy, would follow suit. ING expects subscriptions to support continued growth of fee-based revenue, particularly by lifting income linked to everyday banking services, Salieski said. The banking group has …
