From Easton’s Lions wish to Oakland’s violence drop and more good news today

Even on days when the wider news cycle feels heavy, there are still moments that cut through the noise and remind you what people are capable of. A child battling illness gets the chance to step onto one of football’s biggest stages. Students rally around families they may never meet. A community comes together to help give one family something life-changing that should never have felt out of reach in the first place. Today’s stories are about that kind of help: direct, human, and easy to recognize when you see it. Easton gets his wish and announces the Detroit Lions’ first-round draft pick Easton joined @nflcommish to announce our first-round pick on stage in Pittsburgh. (CREDIT: Detroit Lions / X) The NFL draft is built for spectacle, but one of the night’s most memorable moments belonged to a Lions fan named Easton. Before Detroit made its first-round selection, Easton walked onto the draft stage through Make-A-Wish and delivered the pick himself, announcing Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller at No. 17. Coverage tied to the pick …

Do supplements like collagen, magnesium and lion’s mane actually help with menopause symptoms? Here’s what the science says

Do supplements like collagen, magnesium and lion’s mane actually help with menopause symptoms? Here’s what the science says

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Social media is saturated with menopause solutions: powders for brain fog, gummies for sleep or capsules promising hormonal balance. Supplements such as magnesium, lion’s mane, creatine and collagen are being marketed as must-haves for perimenopause and menopause. But how much of this is actually grounded in science? During perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating and declining oestrogen levels can trigger symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disruption, anxiety, brain fog, joint pain and changes in muscle mass and body composition. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains the most effective treatment for many symptoms, but not everyone can or wants to use it. This is why alternative remedies attract so much attention. Magnesium Magnesium plays a role in more than 300 metabolic processes, including muscle relaxation, nerve signalling and blood pressure regulation. Several menopause-related symptoms overlap with areas where magnesium has effects. For …

More Red Lion that Three Lions as YouTubers put on 20-goal show

Good afternoon and welcome to our live blog for the Sidemen FC vs YouTube Allstars charity football match at Wembley. Returning for its seventh instalment, the event is organised by YouTube group, the Sidemen. 90,000 fans will arrive in north-west London to witness their favourite content creators and online personalities feature in a blockbuster at England’s showpiece stadium. The event is a fantastic way of raising money for charity, with last year’s edition generating over £4.7 million. This year, all proceeds will go to the following charities. Bright Side: a grant-making charity that helps individuals “find and maintain a safe place to call home” and aids “young people in accessing education, spaces and opportunities.” M7 Education: an educative organisation which “helps teachers bring learning to life through amazing, memorable school trips and workshops.” This game is the 10th anniversary of this fundraiser. Back in 2016, the match was held at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, with the Sidemen winning 7-2. Three matches were hosted at The Valley, Championship outfit Charlton Athletic’s home, between 2017 and …

England route to 2026 World Cup final: Three Lions could face Brazil after fixtures finalised

England route to 2026 World Cup final: Three Lions could face Brazil after fixtures finalised

England have discovered their likeliest routes to the 2026 World Cup final as the remaining berths at this summer’s expanded tournament were confirmed by qualification play-off ties this week. Having long since booked their own ticket to football’s biggest show, the Three Lions laboured through a pair of winless friendlies against Uruguay and Japan during the March international break. Elsewhere in Europe and around the globe, nations contested win-or-go-home bouts aiming to secure one of the final available spots at this year’s World Cup. Four-time winners Italy came up short and will miss out on a third successive World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Denmark similarly falling in a penalty shoot-out, theirs against the Czech Republic. But what does all of that mean for England? ” loading=”lazy” class=”sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB”/> England were beaten by Japan after drawing with Uruguay The FA via Getty Images Past the group stage, we’ve used world rankings as the deciding factor when listing England’s possible opponents. It’s also worth noting that due to FIFA’s seeding of the tournament, …

Lions Led by Donkeys – The Atlantic

Lions Led by Donkeys – The Atlantic

The trope that the British soldiers of World War I were “lions led by donkeys” is somewhat unfair. But the phrase can and should be applied to the current Iran war, at least insofar as the United States is concerned. The U.S. is waging a struggle against an unquestionably malign enemy, using a military that is highly competent but in some respects under-equipped, and with the worst wartime political leadership America has ever had. Admittedly, some of the criticism of America’s leadership is wide of the mark. The notion that it has no objectives, or that those objectives are unclearly articulated, is exaggerated, because the depressing truth is that in wartime, objectives are usually muddled, occasionally implicit, and always changing. Take, for example, the most recent supposedly clear-cut case of goal setting in war. George H. W. Bush’s four stated objectives for the Gulf War fall apart on close examination. They were: ensuring the safety of American citizens in the Gulf (a reference to hostages held by Iraq, who were released before the war), driving …

The saint who faced down lions and killer seals is one of many ‘leading ladies’ in early Christian texts

(The Conversation) — The Bible is filled with brave and courageous women. Deborah, the judge who fought a war to protect her people. The widow Ruth, who wittingly convinces a man to marry her in order to continue the lineage of her mother-in-law, Naomi. Esther, who boldly stands up to an evil politician, Haman, in order to save the Jewish people from death. Judith, who beheads an opposing general in order to save her community. The stories of these confident women are found in the Hebrew Bible, the sacred text of Judaism, which also forms half of the Christian Bible. But when it comes to the New Testament, where are the “leading ladies” of Christianity? A reliquary of St. Thecla dating to the 15th or 16th century shows her with the lioness who defended her.Daderot/Wikimedia Commons While a few important women are mentioned – such as Mary, the mother of Jesus; and Mary Magdalene, who discovers his empty tomb – no women are the stars of their own books in this half of the Bible. …

The Giant, Voracious Sea Lions That Humans Cannot Stop

The Giant, Voracious Sea Lions That Humans Cannot Stop

Of all the schemes that humans have devised to keep sea lions from gorging on the salmon of the Columbia River basin, none has worked for long. Local officials and researchers have chased sea lions with boats and peppered them with rubber bullets; they’ve detonated noisy explosives. They’ve outfitted the docks where the animals like to rest with uncomfortable spinners, electrified mats, flailing tube men, and motion-activated sprinklers. (“Very surprisingly, they don’t like to get wet on land,” Casey Clark, a marine-mammal biologist at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, told me.) At one point, the Port of Astoria dispatched a 32-foot fiberglass replica of sea lions’ primary predator, the orca, outfitted with real orca sounds, that almost immediately capsized. Scientists have captured sea lions and released them thousands of miles away, as far as Southern California. No matter the tactic, the result is largely the same: Within weeks, or sometimes even hours, the sea lions swim right back. The waterways of the Columbia River basin, full of dams that corral salmon in tight …

Lions have two types of roar – new research

Lions have two types of roar – new research

The roar of an African lion is one of the most iconic sounds of the animal kingdom. However, my new research suggests it should actually be separated into two distinct vocalisations: the full-throated roar, and an “intermediary roar” with a flatter, less varied sound. Making this distinction could have important implications for lions’ conservation. The total population of wild lions in Africa is estimated to be between 22,000 and 25,000, but this number is half what it was 25 years ago. The main drivers of this decline are habitat loss and fragmentation, reduction in prey, and conflict with local people. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list, lions are now vulnerable to extinction. My colleagues and I investigated roaring in lions to get better at distinguishing between their different vocalisations. But our findings may make it easier to monitor lions’ numbers, which in turn would make it easier to protect them. You might think you know a lion’s roar from the clip used by MGM at the start of all its …
