The original film, which was released in 1997, follows two best friends as they realise they were not popular in school and decide to concoct elaborate lies to impress the peers who were unkind to them when they return to their home town for a school reunion. It also starred Janeane Garofalo and Alan Cumming, with a cameo from Justin Theroux. An Instagram post from 20th Century Studios announced that the movie was in production, showing Kudrow and Sorvino in costume sitting in director’s chairs emblazoned with the words Romy and Michele 2.
