The Weird, Twisting Tale of How China Spied on Alysa Liu and Her Dad

The Weird, Twisting Tale of How China Spied on Alysa Liu and Her Dad

On November 16, 2021, Matthew Ziburis sat in his car in a residential neighborhood in the Bay Area stalking an “enemy,” as he put it. A veteran of both the US Army and Marine Corps, Ziburis had previously served in Iraq. But on this mission, he was working at the behest of China’s government. The targets that autumn day were American citizens: Arthur Liu and his teenage daughter, Alysa. Arthur’s personal story was an exemplar of the American Dream. As a university student, he took part in the 1989 pro-democracy movement in China. After the crackdown at Tiananmen Square that year, he fled to the United States, settling in California. Arthur poured a small fortune and an equal amount of energy into molding Alysa into a figure skating phenom. As a national champion at age 13, she bantered along with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, and was at the time on track to represent America at the Winter Olympics the following year in Beijing. Ziburis was surveilling the Liu home when he called Arthur, …

Shenzhen Express | Yi-Ling Liu

Shenzhen is a city that builds. In the 1980s, during China’s economic reforms, Deng Xiaoping declared the city a special economic zone, calling on migrants from across the country to move there to construct a metropolis from the ground up. They built highways, bridges, and the city’s first skyscraper, the fifty-story Guomao Building, at a rate of one floor every three days—a pace that came to be known as “Shenzhen speed.” They dredged ports, carved tunnels through bedrock, and raised glass towers on reclaimed land. They built factories that first made T-shirts, cardboard boxes, and plastic toys, then circuit boards, televisions, karaoke microphones, gaming consoles, and most of the world’s iPhones. By the late 2010s Shenzhen produced more than 90 percent of the world’s electronics, earning it the moniker “the Silicon Valley of hardware.” Today the city is home to the world’s largest makers of electric vehicles, telecommunications equipment, and consumer drones. Shenzhen serves as an example of China’s manufacturing power as well as a foil for Silicon Valley in Dan Wang’s new book, Breakneck: …

Intrinsic Motivation Helped Alysa Liu Win Gold

Intrinsic Motivation Helped Alysa Liu Win Gold

“I skated every day when I was like 13, 14…Especially as a kid, you don’t really know what you want. Skating feels more like a responsibility or a burden even. Like this is what I have to do.” –Alysa Liu, 20, 2026 Olympic gold medalist, women’s figure skating Alysa Liu has described her early skating career as fueled by extrinsic motivation, or a desire to do something based on external factors like pressure or a reward. People experience extrinsic motivation on a daily basis: An employee stays late at the office in hopes of a bonus or promotion. A student studies hard for a test to get an A and avoid disappointing their parents. This external pressure can be helpful but, when too dominant, can also drain the joy from activities people once loved. In Liu’s case, the urging of her father and coaches provided extrinsic motivation—and it worked. At age 13, she became the youngest U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Champion in history. But at 16, she quit skating abruptly to do things she wanted …

Olympians Liu and Gu Travel Very Different Paths, and China-US Relations Hang Over Their Stories

Olympians Liu and Gu Travel Very Different Paths, and China-US Relations Hang Over Their Stories

WASHINGTON (AP) — It is as captivating as it is divisive: the tale of two Chinese American athletic geniuses who have so much in common but make such different choices. Eileen Gu, a 22-year-old freestyle skier, and Alysa Liu, a 20-year—old figure skater, were both born to Chinese immigrants in California, and both were brought up in single-parent households. Both are elite athletes who turned in gold-medal performances at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics last month. But public opinion diverges over their choices about the countries for which they compete. Gu chooses to represent China, while Liu waves the U.S. flag. Those decisions are generating heated debates over loyalty — an issue interwoven with money, values and politics on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. In China, many laud Gu for identifying herself as Chinese and competing for the honor of the motherland. But plenty praise Liu, too, for her free spirit and genuineness — sometimes with a subtle nod to her father’s role in the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests that landed him …
