Wood played a character reminiscent of one of the Doctor’s companions in Doctor Who, while regular SNL UK castmember Hammed Animashaun stood in for the Doctor. SNL mocked Aimee Lou Wood’s teeth. Now she’s hosting the UK version – what a power move

Get the latest entertainment news, reviews and star-studded interviews with our Independent Culture email Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter One year ago, Saturday Night Live mocked Aimee Lou Wood with a lazy, tasteless sketch about her teeth. Now, in an impressive power move, she’s set to host SNL UK. It’s sure to be must-watch television, and a masterful resetting of the narrative by Wood. We’ve all dreamt about getting one up on those who’ve hurt us, but what if you could revisit that insulting joke they made about you, and beat them at their own game, on national television? This choice of host has to be the biggest thing to happen on a series that has already reinvigorated the British comedy scene, brought us the greatest Princess Diana impression the world has witnessed, and, most surprisingly, been shared by Donald Trump. It was in April last year that Wood, her star rising higher and higher following her endearing, heartfelt turn …

Coronation Street’s Lou Michaelis exits again as prison storyline ends

Coronation Street’s Lou Michaelis exits again as prison storyline ends

Another favourite has left the Coronation Street cobbles. A dramatic prison scene sparked the end of Lou Michaelis’ (Farrel Hegarty) second stint in the ITV soap, 13 months since her first appearance. The character was introduced alongside husband Mick (Joe Layton), as the nightmare neighbours who moved into Mawdsley Street, across the ginnel from Chesney and Gemma Winter-Brown (Sam Aston and Dolly-Rose Campbell). After ruffling feathers with the Weatherfield residents, Lou was sent down for attacking Gary Windass (Mikey North), who she developed an obsession with. Meanwhile, Mick ended up behind bars for brutally killing PC Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) with a baseball bat. Hegarty reprised her role for a brief stint earlier this year, after Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) found herself imprisoned for causing death by dangerous driving. Lou (Farrell Hegarty) was Debbie’s (Sue Devaney) prison pal. ITV Debbie had pleaded guilty to causing a multi-vehicle pile-up (which was seen during the Corrie crossover episode with Emmerdale, Corriedale), in a bid to protect her son Carl (Jonathan Howard). At the time, he was unsure why …

Boring school admin, managing morning chaos, making sure the kids eat something other than sweets, knowing when they need their PE kit – it’s all a very mundane but necessary part of parenting, although not a part that usually gets recognised or rewarded. But it often seems to be the responsibility of just one parent. That person has been dubbed the ‘default parent’ by mum-of-two Lou Beckett, wife of the comedian Rob Beckett. And she felt so weighed down and frustrated by the emotional and logistical burden of being the default parent that she’s written a book about it. The book, Lessons from a Default Parent, aims to let other default parents know …

The Incredible Hulk creator Kenneth Johnson reveals why Lou Ferrigno was banned from speaking in iconic show

The Incredible Hulk creator Kenneth Johnson reveals why Lou Ferrigno was banned from speaking in iconic show

The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno was banned from speaking in the 1970s series because he had a New York accent. The show – based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby – ran between 1977 and 1982 and was repeated throughout the ’80s as well as spawning a series of television films. It was created by Kenneth Johnson and followed mild mannered scientist David Banner – played by Bill Bixby – trying to live his life without getting angry and turning into the enraged Hulk, played by Ferrigno. Bixby as Banner was famous for his line “you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry” and was a global hit. Now, the TV programme’s creator Johnson has spilled that Ferrigno always wanted some dialogue as the Hulk but the writer wouldn’t let him talk because of his thick Brooklyn drawl. Speaking to BANG Showbiz, Johnson – who also wrote sci-fi shows V and The Bionic Woman – shared: “Lou Ferrigno used to say to me, ‘Kenny, why doesn’t the Incredible Hulk …
