Young King: revealing book shines light on Martin Luther King Jr’s early days | Books

Lerone Martin, a prominent scholar of Black religious history, leads the Martin Luther King Jr Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. His new book, Young King: The Making of Martin Luther King Jr, grew from “professional and personal” roots. Professionally, Martin “started coming across things that I had never seen before” about the civil rights leader’s childhood in Atlanta, his years at Morehouse College, and his time at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pennsylvania. One key episode happened in 1944, when King was 15. Travelling north from Georgia, he spent a summer working in the tobacco fields of Simsbury, Connecticut. It’s known as a transformative stay, vital in King’s eventual decisions to follow his father as a preacher and to fight for civil rights. Nonetheless, Martin found an underexploited resource. “We have the five letters that he sent back from Connecticut, talking about experiencing life out of the Jim Crow south,” Martin said. “I read books on King, and had never seen anyone really talk about that in detail at all. So that got …

Martin Luther King and the Minnesota Protests

Martin Luther King and the Minnesota Protests

Among those who defend the behavior of ICE in the shooting of Renee Nicole Good, one argument goes like this: Activists have been recklessly trying to obstruct these agents as they carry out their work, all for the sake of getting a viral moment that makes the officers look like thugs. These ICE defenders are not wrong, but what they see as annoyance and endangerment seems more like a deliberate strategy with a long history—a successful one. The unarmed, nonviolent citizens who have been following ICE agents, blowing whistles to alert people to their presence, even heckling and mocking them, are not just trying to impede their work. They are aiming, as well, to illustrate a contrast, evoke a reaction that will reveal a moral truth, and tell a story they can capture on their phone: on one side, an aggressive, violent, extrajudicial (and masked) paramilitary group exercising brute force against anyone who gets in their way, and on the other, people who are simply attempting to be decent neighbors. Good and her fellow “rapid …

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST: On this day honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we turn to his eldest son, Martin Luther King III. He is a civil rights advocate in his own right who continues to build on his father’s legacy, and he is with us now. Good morning. Thank you so much for being here on this important day. MARTIN LUTHER KING III: Good morning, and thank you for the opportunity. MARTIN: You know, since we’re celebrating your father’s birthday today, I know he traveled a lot when you were young, but do you remember celebrating his birthday when you were growing up? What did you all do? MARTIN LUTHER KING III: Well, like all families, we would have a cake, and we would sing happy birthday, and, you know, there were gifts. I don’t remember that aspect of it, but what …

How Martin Luther King Jr. inspired this Nigerian doctor : NPR

Martin Luther King Jr speaks to civil rights marchers in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 25, 1965. He was a believer in health care for all: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman.” Stephen F. Somerstein/via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Stephen F. Somerstein/via Getty Images Growing up as a teenager in Kano State, Nigeria, in the 1980s, I loved to read. Used copies of Ebony magazine were especially treasured. They offered a rare window into the lives, struggles and aspirations of African Americans, and a way for me to feel connected to a community far beyond my immediate environment. Through Ebony, I was introduced to towering figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Their courage, moral clarity and commitment to justice shaped how I thought leadership and service. King is rightly remembered for his leadership in the civil rights movement but far less attention is paid to his views on health and justice. He once observed, “Of all the …

Building ‘beloved community’: Remembering the friendship between Martin Luther King Jr. and Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh

Building ‘beloved community’: Remembering the friendship between Martin Luther King Jr. and Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh

(The Conversation) — Before Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, he asked several of his friends to continue his life’s work building what he called “beloved community.” One of the people he invited was the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, poet and mindfulness teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. My new book, “On Mindful Democracy: A Declaration of Interdependence to Mend a Fractured World,” is inspired by King and Hanh’s friendship. These two men bonded over the shared insight that how we show up for each other matters, as does how we advocate for social change. In his sermon “Loving Your Enemies” King announced, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Hanh taught: There is no way to peace, peace is the way.“ At the heart of beloved community is true democracy. To be agents of change who do not add to the suffering of the world, people must learn to become more loving and peaceful people. ‘The real enemies of man’ Hanh was born in 1926 in central Vietnam. As a young Buddhist monk …
