Arsenal Capitalizes on Lyon Blunders to Win 2-1 in Women’s Champions League Semifinals

Arsenal Capitalizes on Lyon Blunders to Win 2-1 in Women’s Champions League Semifinals

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal benefited from two defensive blunders to rally for a 2-1 win over Lyon in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League semifinals on Sunday, keeping the English club on course to defend its title. Trailing to Jule Brand’s 19th-minute goal for record eight-time champion Lyon, Arsenal was gifted an equalizer in the 59th when Mariona Caldentey’s low free kick into the area was fumbled backward by goalkeeper Christiane Endler and onto the post. Lyon center back Ingrid Engen, stretching to make the clearance, inadvertently turned the ball into her own net. Engen compounded that mistake by misreading a back-pass from teammate Lindsey Heaps in the 83rd minute. Olivia Smith got to the ball ahead of Engen, had a shot saved by Endler, and recovered to convert the rebound. The return match is in Lyon on Saturday. In the other semifinal, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are locked at 1-1 after the first leg in Germany. The final will be in Oslo on May 23. Arsenal is seeking to beat Lyon in …

Lyon drug traffickers hire Colombian hitmen to kill their rivals

Lyon drug traffickers hire Colombian hitmen to kill their rivals

It all began on Friday, November 15, 2024. That day, in the late afternoon, a visibly exhausted man with hollow cheeks and trembling hands pushed open the doors of the Bron police station, located in the suburbs of Lyon. Speaking in Spanish, he identified himself as John Edward C., a 32-year-old Colombian national, and made it clear to the receptionists that he had important information to reveal about a planned premeditated murder in the area. When they entered his name into the database, the police discovered that he appeared in two incident reports filed a few days earlier at a Lyon police station regarding the theft of his suitcase and passport. They also learned that he was subject to an order to leave French territory and had been staying for about one month in a shelter in Bron. An assassination plot? The police wondered whether they were dealing with a compulsive, thrill-seeking liar. But his insistence intrigued them enough to alert their colleagues at the judicial police, based at the central police headquarters on Rue …

New election rules spice up Paris, Marseille and Lyon mayor races

New election rules spice up Paris, Marseille and Lyon mayor races

A voter cast a ballot at a polling station in Lyon on March 15, 2020. JEFF PACHOUD / AFP France’s municipal elections next month will be held under new rules in the three largest cities in the country – Paris, Lyon and Marseille – with uncertain consequences on the outcome. Since 1982, municipal elections in these three cities, which together have 2.1 million voters, have worked differently from the rest of France. Until this year, voters would elect councilors for their arrondissement, with the top-ranking councilors then forming a central municipal council that elected the city’s mayor. Starting this year, there will be two separate ballots. One will be elect the arrondissement council, and the other, the city council, which will then appoint the mayor. Even then, each city has its own specificities. In Lyon, voters will have a third ballot to elect the Greater Lyon metropolitan council. Marseille’s 16 arrondissements are grouped in pairs, forming eight sectors led by as many mayors. The consequences of these changes are beginning to show, with most campaigns …

In Lyon, the far right pays tribute to activist and tries to avoid controversy

In Lyon, the far right pays tribute to activist and tries to avoid controversy

According to the Rhône prefecture, nearly 3,200 people attended the march organized in Lyon on February 21, 2026, in tribute to Quentin Deranque, an activist from the radical far right. BRUNO AMSELLEM/DIVERGENCE FOR LE MONDE The instructions had been clear and supposedly strict: to join the march organized on Saturday, February 21, by far right in Lyon, in memory of one of their own – Quentin Deranque, who died a week earlier from injuries sustained during clashes with far-left activists – participants were required to avoid any distinctive signs associated with this political group. The task was a tough one. No flags other than that of France, no visible significant tattoos, no insults, no provocative behavior, and not even a balaclava or neck gaiter to cover one’s face. The local prefecture had set this last condition in order to authorize the march in memory of the 23-year-old man, whose death is still under investigation, with seven people charged. These dramatic circumstances did not quieten the far right’s desire to turn Deranque into a martyr, quite the …
