King Charles and Queen Camilla land in the US after gunman storms Trump event | Royal | News

King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in the US for their state visit to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Their Majesties landed at Joint Base Andrews, near Washington DC, at around 7.35pm UK time on Monday.

The King beamed in a navy suit, while the Queen wore a new pink Dior coat dress with a special Cartier brooch featuring crossed Stars and Stripes and Union flags, which was presented to the late Queen Elizabeth II by New York Mayor Robert Wagner during her state visit in 1957.

The late Queen’s visit marked a pivotal reinforcement of ties for the UK and US as the visit fell during the height of the Cold War. The symbolic brooch is platinum set with rubies, emeralds and diamonds.

Charles and Camilla’s staff and luggage were seen being taken off the plane before they headed down.

The royal trip comes after a shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner raised doubts about security

Chaos erupted on Saturday night after a gunman armed with “multiple weapons” tried to charge a dinner at Washington DC attended by US President Donald Trump.

It has also been shrouded in controversy amid tensions between the White House and Downing Street. Trump has repeatedly criticised Keir Starmer over a lack of support for the US military operation in Iran.

Trump’s threats to buy Greenland and the capture of Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro have also received varying levels of criticism from the UK government.

Britain’s ambassador to the US said that the King’s visit has “all appropriate security measures” in place

Sir Christian Turner said UK and US security teams had been planning the trip for weeks before the incident at the media dinner, with changes possible “as we go”.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the visit would “proceed as planned” after discussions were held on both sides of the Atlantic and advice taken from the Government.
