Pistons Pound the Magic in Paint and Meet Them at the Rim to End Their Long Home Playoff Win Drought

DETROIT (AP) — Ben Wallace and Rick Mahorn, like proud uncles, watched the Detroit Pistons pound the Orlando Magic in the paint and meet them at the rim in a 98-83 win that tied their first-round series at a game apiece. “I’m sure they appreciated it,” Pistons power forward Isaiah Stewart said. Wallace, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and Mahorn, an enforcer for the Bad Boys, helped the Pistons win a lot of games that looked like Wednesday night’s slugfest. “I’m willing to lay my body on the line to make those plays for the energy,” Stewart said. Top-seeded Detroit held eighth-seeded Orlando to 33% shooting and season lows in points and field goals. The Pistons forced 19 turnovers and blocked 11 shots. “When we play defense at the level we’re capable of, it triggers everything for us,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “We can be an elite defensive team, a disruptive defense. It’s Pistons basketball. That’s what it looks like. “We had one off night and it came at a bad …

Brain waves predict the intensity of magic mushroom trips

Brain waves predict the intensity of magic mushroom trips

A person’s natural brain wave patterns might offer a reliable preview of how intensely they will react to a dose of psilocybin. The resting electrical activity of the brain not only shifts dramatically during a psychedelic experience, but specific patterns present before taking the drug actively predict the psychological effects that follow. The research was published in Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry. The active ingredient in magic mushrooms, psilocybin, is currently under intense investigation as a presumed therapeutic agent. Clinical trials are testing its efficacy for depression, addictive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Australia recently approved the drug for treatment-resistant depression in specific clinical settings. Despite this clinical momentum, the exact ways the compound alters human brain function remain somewhat elusive. A major challenge in modern psychiatry is figuring out why people respond so differently to psychedelics. Finding a reliable way to anticipate these diverse patient reactions could help doctors identify which individuals are most likely to benefit from the therapy. To investigate this, a team of researchers led by scientist Cheng-Teng Ip at …

The Magic Found the Formula for Making the Playoffs. for Them, It Was Called Desperation

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando Magic found their winning formula. Desperation works. Facing elimination and clearly wanting no part of it, the Magic might have put together one of their best performances of the season Friday night. They rolled past the Charlotte Hornets 121-90 in an Eastern Conference play-in game, moving into the playoffs for the third straight season and getting a matchup with top-seeded Detroit as their reward. “When you play with a sense of desperation and urgency, when you know you’re either going home or extending your season, that’s what it looks like,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “There (are) no second chances.” Mosley is the first coach to lead the Magic to three consecutive playoff appearances since Stan Van Gundy took Orlando there in five straight years. Van Gundy was at Friday’s game as an analyst for Amazon Prime Video. “I’ve got to be honest. Charlotte is shrinking from the competition,” Van Gundy said on the broadcast, as the Magic were running away in the second quarter — building what became …

Sandra Bullock Talks Practical Magic 2, Paramount Deal With Pam Abdy

As Paramount closes in on its mega-deal for Warner Bros. Discovery, Warners’ film team is not letting the uncertainty change how they do their jobs, according to co-chair and CEO Pam Abdy. Speaking at the CNBC Changemakers event in lower Manhattan Thursday alongside Practical Magic 2 star and producer Sandra Bullock, Abdy said that she and her co-CEO Mike De Luca are already greenlighting projects that won’t debut until 2028 and 2029, and are working to keep the staff at the studio engaged. “As a leader, I have a job to do every day. I have people that show up passionate and have a lot of work to do,” Abdy said. “So our whole entire ’26 slate is about to come out. We’re finishing up there, getting all the marketing campaigns ready. We have our entire ’27 slate that’s already locked and loaded, shooting, and we’re planning now. Mike and I are greenlighting movies for ’28 and ’29 right now. Like everything, we will have to see what happens. It’s in the regulatory process. There’s …

Sandra Bullock Pokes Jokes About Nicole Kidman Meme While Teasing Practical Magic 2

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock had some fun while teasing their new sequel to Practical Magic at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. On Sunday night, the pair appeared on stage together at the movie event to discuss their supernatural reunion, with Sandra commenting: “Why do we come here, Nicole?” “We come to this place for magic,” the Oscar winner playfully responded. Nicole was, of course, alluding to her now-infamous advert for AMC, which premiered in 2021 and immediately went viral due to the A-lister’s earnest declarations about why she loves a trip to the cinema so much. Back in 2024, the Australian performer admitted she was well aware of the many memes she’d inspired over the years – and set the record straight on a few. As for her iconic AMC advert, she insisted: “I’ll do anything for cinema, so you can meme me as much as you want.” Elsewhere during their on-stage appearance at ComicCon, Nicole assured fans that they can look forward to more “midnight margaritas”, “jumping off the roof” and hers and Sandra’s …

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair review – the TV magic they’ve created here is absolutely miraculous | Television

At this point, Bryan Cranston is firmly entrenched as one of the world’s finest actors. He has seven Emmys, two Tonys and a Golden Globe to his name. History, quite rightly, will remember him as one of the greats. That said – and this really wasn’t a sentence I expected to write a couple of hours ago – there is a distinct possibility that the greatest work of his entire career might be the scene in the Malcolm in the Middle revival where he thrashes around naked as he is overcome by a drug-induced ego death. Perhaps this does make some small amount of sense. Although Malcolm in the Middle became best known as an absurd counterpoint to Breaking Bad – the sheer dramatic intensity of the latter playing against the generic sitcom daddery of the former – those of us who always loved the show knew that Cranston spent a lot of it going full throttle. Malcolm in the Middle, after all, was the sitcom that kept cutting back to Cranston having his back …

Iconic L.A. venue the Magic Castle set to reopen following roof fire

The outcome could have been very different after a fire broke out Tuesday at a well-known Hollywood venue, but the site emerged relatively unscathed, the owner said, chalking it up to “true Magic Castle magic!” Randy Pitchford, owner of the Magic Castle, confirmed Wednesday that damage was minimal after a roof fire flared up at the property around 5 p.m. The more than 100-year-old Victorian-style building features pieces of historic art, artifacts, a museum and a library — all of which could have turned to ash, Pitchford said. “It’s a wonder and a miracle — true Magic Castle magic!” he wrote in a statement on X. “The top floor offices and attic are pretty wrecked, but ALL of our important history [is] safe, sound, and undamaged!” Pitchford confirmed that no employees or guests were injured. Ben Roman, an employee at the Magic Castle, said there were about 200 people inside the building when the fire began. “Those of us in the office smelled smoke and immediately sprung into action and called [the Los Angeles Fire …
