DETROIT (AP) — Ben Wallace and Rick Mahorn, like proud uncles, watched the Detroit Pistons pound the Orlando Magic in the paint and meet them at the rim in a 98-83 win that tied their first-round series at a game apiece. “I’m sure they appreciated it,” Pistons power forward Isaiah Stewart said. Wallace, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and Mahorn, an enforcer for the Bad Boys, helped the Pistons win a lot of games that looked like Wednesday night’s slugfest. “I’m willing to lay my body on the line to make those plays for the energy,” Stewart said. A person’s natural brain wave patterns might offer a reliable preview of how intensely they will react to a dose of psilocybin. The resting electrical activity of the brain not only shifts dramatically during a psychedelic experience, but specific patterns present before taking the drug actively predict the psychological effects that follow. The research was published in Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry. The active ingredient in magic mushrooms, psilocybin, is currently under intense investigation as a presumed therapeutic agent. Clinical trials are testing its efficacy for depression, addictive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Australia recently approved the drug for treatment-resistant depression in specific clinical settings. Despite this clinical momentum, the exact ways the compound alters human brain function remain somewhat elusive. A major challenge in modern psychiatry is figuring out why people respond so differently to psychedelics. Finding a reliable way to anticipate these diverse patient reactions could help doctors identify which individuals are most likely to benefit from the therapy. Facing elimination and clearly wanting no part of it, the Magic might have put together one of their best performances of the season Friday night. They rolled past the Charlotte Hornets 121-90 in an Eastern Conference play-in game, moving into the playoffs for the third straight season and getting a matchup with top-seeded Detroit as their reward. “When you play with a sense of desperation and urgency, when you know you’re either going home or extending your season, that’s what it looks like,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “There (are) no second chances.” Mosley is the first coach to lead the Magic to three consecutive playoff appearances since Stan Van Gundy took Orlando there in five straight years. The outcome could have been very different after a fire broke out Tuesday at a well-known Hollywood venue, but the site emerged relatively unscathed, the owner said, chalking it up to “true Magic Castle magic!” Randy Pitchford, owner of the Magic Castle, confirmed Wednesday that damage was minimal after a roof fire flared up at the property around 5 p.m. The more than 100-year-old Victorian-style building features pieces of historic art, artifacts, a museum and a library — all of which could have turned to ash, Pitchford said. “It’s a wonder and a miracle — true Magic Castle magic!” he wrote in a statement on X. “The top floor offices and attic are pretty wrecked, but ALL of our important history [is] safe, sound, and undamaged!” Pitchford confirmed that no employees or guests were injured.
