Mamdani’s big bet pays off in New York: 5 takeaways from Tuesday’s primaries

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D) gamble in a series of House primary contests on Tuesday paid off, with all three of his picks clinching wins.   Democratic socialist candidates Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, backed by Mamdani, cruised to victory, with Avila Chevalier notably ousting Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.). Former mayoral candidate Brad Lander, a progressive with Mamdani’s endorsement, also handily defeated Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.).   These three races put Mamdani at odds with… Source link

The marquee race is in New York’s 12th District, where Democrats are choosing a nominee to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler in one of the safest blue seats in the country. The crowded Manhattan primary includes Assemblymen Alex Bores and Micah Lasher, along with Jack Schlossberg, a grandson of President John F. Kennedy. Bores’ record on artificial intelligence regulation — and the outside money around it — has turned the race into a national proxy fight over how aggressively Democrats should regulate one of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy. Elsewhere in New York, Mayor …

Zohran Mamdani’s clout, a double Trump endorsement and more on the line in Tuesday’s primaries

Zohran Mamdani’s clout, a double Trump endorsement and more on the line in Tuesday’s primaries

Just days after the ticker-tape parade celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA championship, New Yorkers are gearing up for another major contest: Tuesday’s primaries, featuring several intense battles between Democratic members of Congress and upstart challengers. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. Those races, as well as a handful of Democratic House primaries in Maryland and one in Utah, are the latest proving ground in the battle between the different wings in the Democratic Party this year. Progressives are seeking to increase their foothold in Washington, including in a series of races that will test New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s sway among Democrats. And some of the most powerful and well-financed interest groups in politics are spending big in primaries at an inflection point for their issues in Washington. Republicans will have some key races, too — most notably in South Carolina, where the Republican nomination in the open race for governor has gone to a runoff. And both parties are setting up battleground races …

Another Wall Street Giant Is Plotting Its Escape From Mamdani’s New York City: Report

Another Wall Street Giant Is Plotting Its Escape From Mamdani’s New York City: Report

It looks like Citadel isn’t the only Wall Street giant looking for the exits as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) continues his commie Robinhood thing on the city’s richest. Fox Business Network’s Charles Gasparino reported Wednesday that the Manhattan-headquartered private equity giant Apollo is preparing to establish what insiders describe as a “second headquarters” in either Florida or Texas. A formal announcement on the location is expected within weeks. The move would build on Apollo’s earlier internal memo to employees signaling plans for significant future growth outside its longtime New York base, amid a broader migration of financial firms toward business-friendly states in the South. Gasparino reports: The new outpost could eventually become home to as many as 1,000 employees over time – in line with Apollo’s current headcount in New York, the sources said. The buyout firm currently employs more than 6,000 worldwide. Apollo paid a whopping $1.276 billion in income taxes in 2025, up from $1.062 billion the year before. While filings don’t break down how much of that went to …

Ken Griffin “Doubles Down On Miami” After Mamdani’s “Creepy And Weird” Video Vilifying Him

Ken Griffin “Doubles Down On Miami” After Mamdani’s “Creepy And Weird” Video Vilifying Him

Ken Griffin said New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s push for higher taxes on second homes has reinforced Citadel’s commitment to Miami — and even led the firm to scale up its planned headquarters there, according to Bloomberg. Speaking Tuesday at the Milken Institute Global Conference, Griffin said Citadel decided to enlarge its Miami office project after Mamdani publicly referenced his $238 million Central Park South penthouse while promoting a new pied-à-terre tax proposal. “We went to Miami and revised our building plan to make it a bigger office building,” Griffin said. “What the mayor of New York has made clear to my partners, and principally my New York partners, is that we need to double down on our bet in Miami.” Bloomberg writes that Griffin said he watched Mamdani’s video three times and described it as “creepy and weird.” He added that the situation brought back memories of his departure from Chicago, where he previously criticized local leadership before moving Citadel and Citadel Securities to Florida. “Looking at what Mamdani did to me and more broadly …

Mamdani’s First 100 Days Aren’t Getting High Marks From Voters

Mamdani’s First 100 Days Aren’t Getting High Marks From Voters

Zohran Mamdani rode a wave of progressive enthusiasm and sweeping promises to become the Mayor of New York City. Now, as he closes in on his first hundred days in office, he’s learning that governing is a lot harder than campaigning, and a new poll suggests New Yorkers are starting to be skeptical about what they voted for. Some of Mamdani’s campaign promises won’t be fulfilled because Gov. Kathy Hochul is refusing to subsidize them. Earlier this year, snow and trash removal problems became major issues, as residents were forced to endure eight-foot-high piles of garbage on the street and rat infestations, all while the area around Gracie Mansion was kept perfectly clean. The brutal winter also resulted in a cold-related death toll of 29. These kinds of crises test political leaders quickly, and he failed. Then came Monday, when Mamdani held a public event to congratulate himself for New York City filing its 100,000th pothole since he took office in January. The reaction was swift and unkind.  “Taking credit for filling potholes is like …

At Mamdani’s interfaith breakfast, NY clergy condemn Trump’s immigration crackdown

NEW YORK (RNS) —  New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted his first interfaith breakfast at the New York Public Library’s midtown location on Friday morning (Feb. 6). For this year’s breakfast, local clergy joined the mayor in condemning the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies. During the event, Mamdani signed an executive order to prevent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from entering city property without a judicial warrant. “ICE is more than a rogue agency. It is a manifestation of the abuse of power,” Mamdani said before signing the document amid applause. “In fact, there is no reforming something so rotten and base.” Executive Order 13 will also prevent the federal government from accessing New Yorkers’ private data and create an interagency response committee on immigration, the mayor said. During the traditional breakfast, Mamdani, who began building ties with local faith leaders during his campaign, made clear that he hoped to work with them to implement his affordability agenda and support the city’s immigrant communities amid ICE operations in the city. Throughout the event, speakers …
