Agnes Gryczkowska Discusses Curating Marina Abramović’s Berlin Mega Show

Agnes Gryczkowska Discusses Curating Marina Abramović’s Berlin Mega Show

Editor’s Note: This story is part of Newsmakers, a new ARTnews series where we interview the movers and shakers who are making change in the art world. Last week, Marina Abramović opened her first solo presentation in Berlin since the 1990s, the bombastically named, “Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition” at Gropius Bau. Set to run through August 23, the show brings together historical and recent works, tracing her long-standing engagement with ritual, eroticism, death, and the body as a site of political and spiritual intensity. Drawing on Balkan folklore, alongside Abramović’s performance history, the exhibition moves between film, installation, sculpture, and live action to create an environment where the boundaries between individual and collective experience are continually tested. At its core, the show frames the erotic as a driving force, linking fertility, mortality, and transformation. Moments of humor sit alongside lamentation and ritual intensity, underscoring the exhibition’s refusal of a single, fixed reading. Related Articles At the packed opening, a huge screen showed Abramović’s video work, Tito’s Funeral (2025), broadcasting women beating their chests in a near trance-like state, …

Italian Winemaker Ornellaia Reveals Marina Abramović’s Designs

Ornellaia, the maker of Super Tuscan wines near the medieval town of Bolgheri, has revealed the designs it has commissioned performance artist Marina Abramović to make for its 2023 vintages. Part of the vintner’s Vendemmia d’Artista project, Abramović has created designs for the standard 750ml bottle, as well as its larger 3L, 6L, and 9L bottles. While the 750 ml have a much larger production, Ornellaia only makes 100 bottles in the 3L size, 10 in the 6L, and one in the 9L. Several of these limited-edition bottles with be auctioned in June at Bonhams, with proceeds benefitting the Guggenheim Museum’s upcoming exhibition “Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now,” opening in June. Related Articles Each size has a different work, with the 750ml and the 3L bottles having self-portrait drawings and the 6L a self-portrait photograph. The 9L bottle, however, provides a more conceptual approach, with the label reading: “Marina Abramović Instructions: Slowly drink wine with eyes closed and listen to the music.” In a video about the collaboration, Abramović, who is currently the subject of …

Alexei Ratmansky’s new ballet, which premiered in Copenhagen this past fall, is an interpretation of Bach’s Art of the Fugue, a piece the composer left unfinished at the time of his death in 1750. As Marina Harss writes in our March 12, 2026, issue, the ballet shares the composition’s disrupted quality: “In Copenhagen Ratmansky was returning to a project that had been painfully interrupted when Russia invaded Ukraine.” So Harss traveled to Denmark, not only for the performance but also to spend time with Ratmansky and the dancers as they rehearsed before opening night. Harss has a particular affinity for Ratmansky’s work and for Ratmansky—she is his biographer. The Boy from Kyiv: Alexei Ratmansky’s Life in Ballet was published in 2023. As a critic, she writes on dance regularly and opera occasionally for The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Hudson Review, among other publications. She has also translated books from the Italian and French, including The Mirador, Élisabeth Gille’s memoir of her mother, Irène Némirovsky; and Poem Strip, a graphic novel by …

Alexei Ratmansky’s Leap of Faith | Marina Harss

It was a rainy afternoon in Copenhagen, and four exhausted ballet dancers were hard at work in a large rehearsal room on the fourth floor of the Royal Danish Theatre. The choreographer Alexei Ratmansky was pacing the studio, intensely focused. An assistant stood beside him holding a score of The Art of the Fugue, Johann Sebastian Bach’s great unfinished work. The dancers had been at it for hours. They looked sallow, too tired even to sweat, but Ratmansky was not yet satisfied with what he saw. He asked the rehearsal pianist to play a passage from the score, took a moment to think, then blurted out two phrases of choreography for the dancers. He showed the steps, and they repeated them back. Then he showed them again, illuminating this or that nuance, and they did it again. Everyone in the room was trying things out, fixing, sculpting, connecting the movements until a phrase emerged, clear and new. It was a week before the premiere, and the ballet was still very much a work in progress. …
