Judy Greer is recalling when her Wedding Planner co-star Matthew McConaughey once came to her rescue. During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress said she had gotten herself into a situation when she accidentally parked at an upscale hotel in New York City for the table read of the 2001 rom-com, starring McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez. Greer played Penny, the latter’s best friend in the film. “I valeted my car; I didn’t know any better,” Greer said of when she arrived at the Roosevelt Hotel. “I didn’t have enough money to get my car out of the valet because I was so broke.” She continued, “I was on the pay phone in the lobby, calling my friend Sean Gunn [Gilmore Girls and Guardians of the Galaxy actor], and Matthew McConaughey overheard me and gave me $20. The audience at the 73rd Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards got a kick out of Patton Oswalt‘s cracks regarding Timothée Chalamet‘s controversial remarks about ballet and opera. Hosting the MPSE ceremony Sunday in Los Angeles for the fourth straight year, Oswalt kicked off the festivities that celebrated sound design. The comedian’s monologue began with quips that called attention to the ongoing debate surrounding Chalamet having told Matthew McConaughey last month during a Variety and CNN town hall that he would not want to be involved in an art form that “no one cares about” and is struggling to stay alive, citing ballet and opera as examples. “Thank God we’re here to celebrate achievement in sound editing and not watching ballet or the opera,” Oswalt said. He added with a laugh, “Thank God we are actually watching something that deserves to be alive.” The jokes led to plenty of laughter from the audience, in addition to some groans. Matthew McConaughey has an incredibly varied filmography ranging from romcoms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past to major roles in hits like The Wolf of Wall Street and The Dallas Buyers Club. However, one of his darkest roles came in 2011, when the Oscar-winning star featured in Killer Joe, which was based on the 1993 play of the same name by Tracy Letts. The film was well received by critics upon its release, scooping awards at The Saturn Awards and Venice Film Festival. The movie was one of the final films directed by legendary director William Friedkin, who died in 2023. The late director was known works including The Exorcist and The French Connection, the latter of which won five Academy Awards. Despite its accolades, Killer Joe isn’t a film that immediately jumps to mind when one thinks of Matthew’s roles, potentially due to its 18-age rating over its graphic content.
