Steak or tofu: why can’t we stop eating so much meat? | Food

Should I tuck into a juicy steak or stick a tofu patty in a bun and call it a burger? Twenty years ago, that question was largely seen as a moral dilemma influenced by grim conditions in factory farms and slaughterhouses. Back then, animal rights activists were the loudest campaigners arguing for people to abstain from meat. They had limited success because vegetarians and vegans made up less than 5% of the population in rich countries – and the best fake meats were bland replicas of real flesh. The word flexitarian had not yet made it into the dictionary. The debate has shifted sharply. The pollution from animal agriculture, which makes up 12-20% of planet-heating gas, is now part of public discourse around eating meat. A dramatic rise in rates of obesity and diseases linked to red meat have made health concerns part of individual decisions to eat less of it. Meanwhile, some plant-based alternatives have improved in texture and taste to the point where even meat lovers struggle to tell that they did not …

Uber released multiple lists Tuesday, revealing the most bizarre, uncommon and valuable items passengers have left behind in honor of the rideshare company’s 10th anniversary. If weird, leftover lost items like pelvis implants, live fish and a Donny Osmond group picture pique your interest, keep reading. Some things, however, have never changed since Uber’s inception. Phones remained the most frequently forgotten item, with more than 1 million left behind. New York City once again earned the title of America’s most forgetful city on the …

Meat Reduction and The Psychology of the Willing Middle

Meat Reduction and The Psychology of the Willing Middle

It’s 2026, and despite years of effort to encourage people to eat less meat, global consumption continues to rise. Chicken consumption is increasing in many countries, and while red meat sales have generally flatlined, total meat consumption remains stubbornly high. Forecasts suggest that this upward trend is likely to persist for years to come. This presents a frustrating challenge for anyone interested in creating a more sustainable food system. Over the last decade, there has been no shortage of attempts to shift our diets in a more plant-based direction, from plant-based burgers designed to mimic meat, campaigns promoting pulses and legumes, novel food technologies, menu redesigns, sustainability labels, recipe innovation, and even restaurants experimenting with making plant-based meals the default option. Researchers have also systematically studied many of these approaches to try to understand what works best, with some clear and promising patterns beginning to emerge. Increasing the availability of plant-based options tends to boost their selection, as does making these options more visible, appealing, and easier to choose. In some cases, changing defaults so …

Aldi announces major £5bn update on eggs, meat, fruit and vegetables | UK | News

Aldi is making a major update on eggs, meat, fruit and vegetables. The supermarket has announced a £5 billion investment in British farming and food production through a series of long-term agreements covering eggs, meat, fruit and vegetables. Aldi said the investment will give farmers and producers greater certainty to invest in their businesses while also helping to strengthen British food supply chains. The agreements, which typically last at least two years, cover fresh fruit and veg, dairy, meat and eggs, with Aldi aiming to source 50% of its domestic produce through long-term agreements by the end of 2027. The move includes a £1.1 billion commitment to British egg production over the next five years. Aldi has teamed up with farmer and TV personality Harriet Cowan to encourage shoppers to buy more British-grown fruit and vegetables. She said: “I’m passionate about highlighting the brilliant work British farmers do to bring high-quality food to our tables. “I’ve loved teaming up with Aldi to learn more about the fruit and veg we grow here in the UK …

Iran government sells subsidised meat for Eid al-Adha under blockade | US-Israel war on Iran News

Eid al-Adha, one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar, comes at a critical time for Iranians this year. Meat from sacrificed animals is often eaten at Iranian tables, but a blockade on Iranian ports and sanctions by the US has led to escalating costs across the country. Unlike Nowruz, the Persian New Year, Eid al-Adha is not as widely celebrated in Iran, but mosques and other institutions still observe the ritual of animal sacrifice, known as qurbani, through authorised livestock and slaughter centres. Here, animals are sacrificed according to Islamic law in a hygienic environment. But another goal of the network is to control runaway inflation by offering meat at lower prices than market rates. Meat substitutes A Tehran municipality body announced on Tuesday that each kilogramme of sacrificial meat would be sold at 7.4 million rials ($4.30) at designated shops. The price for a similar cut on the market can be more than three times that, depending on its quality and the location of the butchers. The minimum wage is currently …

‘Beef. It’s what’s for dinner’: Previous health risks linked to the red meat debunked

Red meat has long been tied to risks to cardiometabolic health, including heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. The conditions affect more than 160 million Americans, including over 36 million living with Type 2 diabetes. However, having 6-7 ounces of beef every day – a slightly smaller portion than a typical ribeye steak – does not affect risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, researchers at Indiana University say. “Results from this gold standard randomized controlled trial build on existing scientific evidence that shows eating beef as part of a healthy dietary pattern supports heart health and does not adversely impact measures of blood sugar regulation or inflammation,” Kevin Maki, an adjunct professor in the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, said in a statement. “When beef is consumed as …

The winners and losers from the UK’s trade deal with the Gulf – POLITICO

Meanwhile, the UAE opted out of environmental commitments in the FTA altogether, leaving those discussions to separate bilateral talks. Human and labor rights campaigners Campaigners have long raised concerns about the Gulf states’ human rights record, with organizations including the Trade Justice Movement, Amnesty International UK, Human Rights Watch urging the prime minister in a joint letter last year to incorporate “strong human rights conditions” before the deal is signed.  Reacting to the details of the deal released on Wednesday, the Trade Justice Movement said it  “looks to be silent” on human and labor rights “in return for minimal economic benefit.”  “By failing to negotiate any enforceable human rights protections within the deal, the U.K. has taken a moral step backwards and undermined the government’s own commitments on democracy, women’s rights and workers’ rights,” said Trade Justice Movement Director Tom Wills. The government has contested that trade agreements are not the forum to directly address human rights issues, while arguing that the deal contains provisions that can contribute to the protection and promotion of human …
