Department of Homeland Security plans to purchase and operate mega warehouses to use as immigration detention centers are raising concerns among lawmakers, local residents and government contractors in the running to operate them. The proposed centers are so large that some could house as many as 8,000 detainees at once, according to a DHS spreadsheet of more than 20 potential locations that was verified by NBC News. The largest federal prison in the U.S., for example, has roughly 4,000 inmates. At least three facilities have already been secured. One is outside Phoenix, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement paid $70 million for a building the size of seven football fields, according to NBC affiliate KPNX of Phoenix. ICE purchased the 418,000-square-foot warehouse in an industrial park in Surprise. Surprise city officials said in a statement that they were not aware of the purchase, that they had not been notified of it and that they had not been contacted by DHS or any other federal agency. ESPN is valued at about $30 billion, with the National Football League’s 10 percent equity stake in the sports media giant securing an estimated fair market value of $3 billion, according to The Walt Disney Co.’s latest quarterly earnings report. Disney and the NFL closed their mega deal in the last week, giving the league its non-controlling interest, leaving Disney with 72 percent, and Hearst with 18 percent. According to the company’s 10-Q, Disney will have an option to reacquire the NFL’s stake in ESPN after July 2034, based on the division’s performance, in exchange for a ten-year note at 70 percent of the then fair market value of the NFL’s interest in ESPN. The league, meanwhile, has an option to acquire an additional 4 percent of ESPN on a similar timetable, also at 70 percent market value. The deal will see ESPN fully own NFL Network, with plans to bake it into the ESPN streaming service. A star rating of 3 out of 5. It’s a bad week to be a faceless goon in this ’80s-style action comedy with a mega body count but no real peril. Dave Baustisa and Jason Momoa star as estranged half-brothers James and Johnny reunited after the death of their father in an apparent hit and run. Bautista is a well-respected Navy Seal and family man living in Hawaii while Momoa is a disgraced cop and all-round wastrel living in Oklahoma, returning to Honolulu under duress. It’s not going to be an easy ride for the pair, who are being hunted by the Yakuza who are seeking a mysterious package, as well as Hawaiian gang the Syndicate, who have serious beef with Jonny and give him seven days to leave the island before they come for his head. Britain’s government on Tuesday approved a huge new Chinese embassy in central London, despite strong criticism from lawmakers across the political spectrum that it could become a base for espionage and intimidation of opponents. Local Government Secretary Steve Reed formally signed off on plans for the building near the Tower of London, after years of delays and legal challenges. Critics have long expressed concerns that the supersized embassy, set to be the biggest Chinese embassy in Europe, will heighten risks of Chinese intelligence-gathering as well as amplify the threat of surveillance and intimidation of Chinese dissidents in exile.
