Cabinet Minister Mistakenly States Cyprus Is In Nato

David Lammy has mistakenly claimed Cyprus is a member of the Nato defence alliance, even though it’s not. The country has been in the spotlight ever since Iranian forces sent two drones to the UK’s RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus last Sunday. There were no casualties and the strike caused limited damage. But the government is still sending additional staff to deal with air defences to the region, including over the island, in case Iran strikes again. Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Friday, the deputy prime minister was explaining why it was so important that the UK defends the base when he misspoke. He said: “We will do everything we can to protect our airbase, to protect our staff and people, but also to support – alongside our allies, I should say, because Cyprus is part of Nato – the French, the Germans and others have also sent frigates to the base.” There are 32 countries in the defence alliance, including many European states near Cyprus like Greece. But Cyprus is one of the four …

On Friday, February 13, just after 5am, police received a report that Chris Baghsarian had been kidnapped from his home in North Ryde, a suburb of Sydney. Early inquiries established that Mr Baghsarian was not the intended target of the kidnapping and had been taken in a case of mistaken identity. CCTV footage captured an SUV driving up outside Mr Baghsarian’s home before two hooded figures approached the house. The figures reappeared with someone who is struggling in their arms before pushing the person into the SUV. A burnt-out vehicle matching the description of the getaway car was found in the nearby suburb of South Turramurra shortly afterwards. Police said Mr Baghsarian was wearing grey pyjamas and a …

US apologizes to student mistakenly deported

US apologizes to student mistakenly deported

Federal officials have issued an apology after a college student was deported during Thanksgiving break, acknowledging mistakes in a case that has drawn renewed attention to the human impact of immigration enforcement. The student was removed from the United States while visiting family over the holiday, despite having unresolved legal matters connected to their immigration status. Advocates and educators criticized the deportation, saying it should not have occurred before those issues were reviewed. Following public scrutiny, government officials acknowledged errors in the handling of the case and said they are reviewing internal procedures to prevent similar incidents. Details about how the deportation was authorized have not been fully disclosed. Unlike high-profile ICE actions involving raids or arrests caught on video, the student’s deportation occurred through administrative processes — a reminder that immigration enforcement often unfolds quietly, with immediate consequences for individuals and families. Advocates say cases like this illustrate how enforcement decisions made behind the scenes can be just as disruptive as public operations. Students, they argue, are particularly vulnerable when removals happen during academic …

Smith has mistakenly slipped up on-air while recapping the Houston Texans’ blowout playoff win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. During Tuesday’s episode of First Take, the sports analyst dissected the Texans’ 30-6 win, thanks to the team’s defense and quarterback C.J. Stroud’s 46-yard pass to wide receiver Christian Kirk. Overall, Kirk finished the game with eight receptions, 144 receiving yards and one touchdown, setting a postseason record. However, as Smith was trying to give Kirk the proper credit, he accidentally mixed up his first name with that of the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in September 2025 at Utah Valley University while speaking to students. The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was shot in the neck by an assassin’s bullet …
