Boss of British Greens plots review to junk unpopular policies – POLITICO

That official, and a second official, said one area earmarked for review is their migration policy, which they acknowledged causes real issues on the doorstep. The Greens’ policy principles state the party “wants to see a world without borders,” even if it would implement a “fair and humane system of managed immigration” before then.  In an interview with POLITICO earlier this month Polanski hinted at his frustration that voters appear to believe his party would throw open Britain’s borders. The Green leader recounted a conversation in the seaside town of Margate with a man who requested a selfie and claimed to be receptive to large swathes of the Greens’ offering, but was not in favor of its approach on drugs and immigration. Iran’s exiled prince tells Europe to get off the fence and back the war – POLITICO

“The military operation is a humanitarian rescue mission and will save many lives,” Pahlavi said. “Europe’s decision to proscribe the IRGC is welcome but it now needs to go further and support our transition plan to rebuild Iran. Europe has too long sat on the fence. This is the moment of decision. Stand with the Iranian people.”  His comments came after European governments first urged restraint, raising concerns about the risks of war spreading through the region and questioning the legitimacy of the action under international law. France’s President Emmanuel Macron called the escalation of the conflict “dangerous.” France, Germany and the U.K. said the Iranian regime should return to negotiations over its nuclear program.  There were signs that leading European powers were shifting their positions on Sunday to support limited involvement in the conflict in response to growing threats from Iranian retaliation.  On Sunday night, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the U.K. would reverse its earlier position and allow U.S. forces to use its air bases for operations, while the French and German leaders …

Royal expert: ‘trump card’ Princess Anne can save monarchy from Andrew | Royal | News

Princess Anne has emerged as the Royal Family’s most important asset in the wake of former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest, with a royal expert warning she will be essential to the monarchy’s survival of the scandal. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has named the Princess Royal, 75, as the Firm’s “trump card” — a figure whose reputation for reliability and duty stands in sharp contrast to the turmoil now engulfing the institution. Mr Fitzwilliams said: “She relishes a high workload and usually undertakes the most royal engagements of any royal. However, she prefers to avoid the media circus that follows the most high profile royals. She is absolutely pivotal in keeping public support for the monarchy.” Anne’s counsel for King Charles Fitzwilliams also suggested Anne could provide her brother King Charles with a vital sounding board as he comes under reported pressure from Prince William over his response to the crisis. He said: “What Anne can offer King Charles, who reportedly has been under pressure from William over his handling of this crisis, is down to …

Can the Monarchy Survive the Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Scandal?

Can the Monarchy Survive the Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Scandal?

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest has sent shockwaves through the royal family. As the palace goes into damage control mode, questions are being raised about whether the monarchy will survive this latest crisis. “It is, without doubt, the biggest crisis since the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936 and could potentially have a more destabilizing effect on the monarchy than was the case when Edward gave up the throne for Wallis Simpson 90 years ago,” royals historian Ed Owens recently told Vanity Fair. Following Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest last week on suspicion of misconduct in public office, there are growing calls for him to be removed from the line of succession. Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has been released under investigation since his arrest. On Monday, Darren Jones, British prime minister Keir Starmer’s chief secretary, told lawmakers, “The government is clear that we are not ruling out action in respect of the line of succession at this stage, and we will consider whether any further steps are required in due course.” Mountbatten-Windsor, who was stripped of his style, …

this isn’t even close to the worst constitutional crisis the monarchy has faced

The arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was, without a doubt, a shocking moment. The release by US officials of 3.5 million pages of documents regarding Mountbatten-Windsor’s longtime friend, the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, have led to multiple allegations of wrongdoing on the part of the eighth in line to the throne – which he denies. But as an expert in British and Commonwealth history, I’m baffled by some of the headlines claiming that this moment is “the worst constitutional crisis” in the modern age. In fact, the affair pales in significance beside the abdication crisis of 1936. The latter has tended to be portrayed in the media as a romantic saga of forbidden love – with the young Edward VIII being forced to choose between the crown and his desire to marry his soon-to-be twice divorced lover, Wallis Simpson. Yet in retrospect, it more resembles a rather genteel coup, with raised eyebrows taking the place of tanks on the palace forecourt. A set of key establishment figures, including the prime minister, the archbishop of Canterbury and …

Arrest of former prince Andrew: ‘An enormous embarrassment’ for the monarchy

Britain’s King Charles III said Thursday “the law must take its course” after police arrested his brother, the former prince Andrew, on suspicion of misconduct over allegations he sent confidential government documents to Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest will come as an “enormous embarrassment” for the British monarchy which must now be seen to be completely transparent in its handling of the unprecedented situation, says Martin Farr, senior lecturer in contemporary British history at Newcastle University. Epstein affair may be ‘the end of the monarchy’, says US congressman | US News

A member of a US congressional committee investigating the Epstein affair has said: “Maybe this will be the end of the monarchy.” Congressman Ro Khanna says he thinks King Charles has questions to answer about the scandal that has embroiled his younger brother, adding: “I think this is the most vulnerable the British monarchy has ever been.” The Democrat, was behind the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the legislation that led to their publication. He told Sky News: “I think this is the most vulnerable the British monarchy has ever been. They ought to ask the King and Queen questions and maybe this will be the end of the monarchy.” Image: Ro Khanna put pressure on the Monarchy. Pic: Reuters Follow latest updates on the Epstein files He added: “If they don’t have answers, if they’re implicated in the Epstein class, it’s not a good look for the British monarchy. “The King has to answer what he knew, what he knew about Andrew, and just stripping Andrew of a title is not enough. “Andrew needs to …
