Mount McKinley is the highest mountain in the USA (Image: Getty) Three climbers on Alaska’s Mount McKinley who fell near a treacherous pass on North America’s tallest peak have died, a Latvian mountaineering group announced Friday. The three were members of a Latvian mountaineering expedition, the group said. They were traversing a route known for its exposed sections where many injuries and deaths have occurred when they fell on Wednesday, the National Park Service said. Their bodies have not yet been recovered. ‘Maybe the suffering is the point’: what does it take to run 163km up and down a mountain? | Ultrarunning

Somewhere before the finish line the body starts to break down, Joanne Walker says. “The pain starts in your feet but before long it moves up to your knees and eventually you feel like you just can’t move your legs any more.” After 30 hours with no sleep, running alone through the cold darkness of the Megalong Valley, the brain can break as well. “At one point, I did not even know where I was going; I was swerving all over the shop,” she says. “But I told myself, no matter how much I am struggling, I promised myself I was going to have the best hair out of anyone on the trail.” Runners make their way through night-time rain on day two of ‘the miler’. Mountain Dew brings back discontinued flavor — but there’s a catch

After Mountain Dew White Out was discontinued six years ago, the soft drink is returning to store shelves in a patriotic 18-can variety pack that will only be available at Walmart for a limited time. The citrus-flavored soda‚ which was described as having hints of yuzu and lemongrass, was originally released in 2010 as part of a fan-voted campaign before it was abruptly taken off the market in 2019. Now, fans can get the favorite flavor in Walmart’s “America Pack,” which includes six Code Red Mountain Dews, six Voltage Raspberry Mountain Dews and six of the White Outs. …

From mountain photography to ice-climbing – try it all at this summer festival in the French Alps | Alps holidays

From mountain photography to ice-climbing – try it all at this summer festival in the French Alps | Alps holidays

After a day spent hiking across the Col d’Entrèves glacier, a sugar hit is required. I descend on the cable car and join the queue at the ice-cream counter. Above me, surrounded by jagged peaks, looms the huge white figure of Mont Blanc, serene and pure against a brilliant blue sky. Although it’s late afternoon, people are still heading up the mountain, and there are two clear groups. On one side are the tourists, who are about to be lifted into unfamiliar frozen realms at 3,375 metres (11,072ft), hoping to grab a picture and return. Mixed among them are the weathered faces of mountain experts: hikers confidently heading for a high-altitude hut, or climbers with coils of rope. How many of those tourists, I wonder, are wishing they could be mountaineers, secretly regretting the twists of fate that kept them away from that path? But all is not lost. The aspiring adventurer, no matter what age or background, can begin the journey to competence in the mountains. The annual mountain festival I am attending aims …

A mountain version of a Parisian wine bar opens in Altadena

A mountain version of a Parisian wine bar opens in Altadena

Chef Tyler Wells’ restaurant opened one month before the Eaton fire tore through the scenic mountain town of Altadena, but it didn’t destroy the community — or his restaurant space. He relaunched it as Betsy last September, and this month, debuted Bar Betsy: an adjacent cafe by day and wine bar by night. “Having those 30 days and having it taken away puts a different perspective on it,” Wells said. “You have this gratitude for what you have in the moment. Every day we’re just present.” Tyler Wells sits outside of his new Altadena cafe and wine bar, Bar Betsy. (Stephanie Breijo / Los Angeles Times) Bar Betsy serves what Wells calls “sunny, beachy, really simple food”: roast-carrot sandwiches, hearth-fired pecan cinnamon buns, heirloom-grain grits topped with thick-cut bacon and runny eggs, market tomatoes with strawberries and burrata. Like Betsy, the menu pulls nearly all of its ingredients from local and independent farms. At night, Wells sees it as a kind of mountain take on a Parisian wine bar, with cheese, charcuterie, cara cara tuna …

Two mountain lion cubs rescued from certain death

Two mountain lion cubs rescued from certain death

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Mountain lions (Puma concolor, cougars, pumas, among its many other names) are carnivorous, sharp-toothed and clawed big cats. They can be dangerous to livestock, pets, and the occasional human—but their cubs sure are adorable. And absolutely vulnerable, when left orphaned.  That’s what happened to little Clover, an underweight and tick-infested mountain lion cub that arrived at California’s Oakland Zoo in March after being picked up in El Dorado County, northeast of the zoo. She had to receive a blood transfusion from another mountain lion at the zoo also rescued in El Dorado County back in 2024.  Clover has been recovering well, however, “her story is sadly too common,” the zoo explains in a social media post. “Mountain lion cubs rely on their mothers for up to two years to teach them essential survival skills. When a kitten is found alone like this, it often means the mother couldn’t return, too often due to vehicle strikes or other human‑wildlife conflicts …

Canyon Spectral:ON CF 8 Electric Mountain Bike: Beginner-Friendly, Under K

Canyon Spectral:ON CF 8 Electric Mountain Bike: Beginner-Friendly, Under $5K

The Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain and brakes are popular across the eMTB market. You’re not getting the very lightest tech, but they are reliable workhorses. Suspension comes from a FOX 38 Rhythm fork and Float X shock, which, like the drivetrain and brakes, are classy performers. There’s 160 millimeters of travel up front and 155 mm at the rear, which gives good support for rough, technical descents, while remaining efficient on longer rides and over mixed terrain. Also included here is Canyon’s in-house iridium dropper post, a 30.9-mm internally routed unit with 125- to 170-mm travel, depending on your frame size. It’s solid, reliable, and easy to use, although I did find it fairly slow to return to position. It’s not a big deal, though. The DT Swiss HLN350 (15 x 110 30-mm) tires are very much in keeping with the rest of the bike—trusted eMTB options that, while not flashy, will perform well and last. The constituent parts all add up to a hugely impressive electric mountain bike that’s a heck of a lot of …

E-bikes are all over mountain trails. Some want them banned

E-bikes are all over mountain trails. Some want them banned

In bright sunshine, with the Pacific Ocean sparkling far below, two middle-aged men hopped on mountain bikes and started climbing a steep dirt road above Zuma Beach in Malibu. They pedaled up more than 2,000 vertical feet, chatting comfortably about marriage, careers and early retirement. They did not discuss the fact that, until recently, a climb like this would have reduced them both to gasping wrecks. Or that their brisk pace would only have been possible for world-class athletes. Their secret? Tiny electric motors tucked between the pedals that quietly quadrupled their leg power. Pedal-assist mountain bikes have fully operable pedals and an electric motor that provides assistance when the rider is pedaling. Across California, electric bikes are proliferating at an astonishing rate as overwhelmed public officials struggle to rewrite the rules of the road. Nowhere is the tension more obvious than in once-tranquil parks and on remote mountain trails, where people go to escape the maddening march of technology. The intrusion of e-bikes, with their faint but unmistakable electric whine, is sparking a fierce …

A moment that changed me: I was desperate to get off the mountain – and that gut instinct saved my life | Life and style

A moment that changed me: I was desperate to get off the mountain – and that gut instinct saved my life | Life and style

I didn’t have a reason for my terrible feeling of dread – and that was part of the problem. From the moment I arrived in Tajikistan with my boyfriend, Tim, to climb two 7,000-metre (23,000ft) peaks, something felt off. It wasn’t a fear I could name: it was more like a constant, unnerving low hum. A helicopter dropped us off – landing on a jagged glacier that was to be our base camp and act as a refuge from avalanches from the towering peaks that surrounded it. The helicopter flew far too low, skimming the glacier ice that looked sharp enough to tear it open. You could see it from the helicopter because there was a gaping hole in the back – a part was missing because it was so old. Once the helicopter left, we were alone with a handful of other climbers, to be collected a month later. It was 2018, and Tim and I had organised our expedition independently, something I do for most of my adventures. Doing it ourselves meant greater …

Aventon Current ADV Electric Mountain Bike Review: Feels Just Like the Real Thing

Aventon Current ADV Electric Mountain Bike Review: Feels Just Like the Real Thing

While Aventon is known first and foremost as an ebike brand, the company started by making fixies in 2013. That gives it some bona fides when it comes to making enjoyable rides for experienced cyclists. (In addition to the Current ADV, there’s also a higher-end model, the Current EXP, with a more expensive carbon frame and better components.) Since its first venture into e-MTBs with the Ramblas in 2024, the company has continued to develop very nicely specced electric mountain bikes for the price. The designers behind the newest iterations did a masterful job. The Current ADV looks 100 percent the part of contemporary mountain bike. With its 6061 aluminum frame, SRAM Eagle groupset, tubeless-ready Maxxis Minion tires wrapping a pair of double-walled 29-inch wheels, a 170-mm X Fusion Manic dropper post, a Rockshox Psylo Gold front suspension that boasts 150 mm of travel, and a Rockshox Deluxe Select+, it’d be easy to confuse the Current ADV for a traditional analog mountain bike.
