Mouse: P.I. For Hire Review: A Competent Shooter Oozing With Cartoon Charm

Like any foolishly hopeful gamer, I sat in the darkness of my home, booting up a game I prayed would shine bright enough to live up to its promise. A black-and-white shooter set in a city full of mice? A classic cartoon animation style? A gumshoe noir plot? The idiosyncrasies stacked like Jenga blocks, and one faulty element could send the whole tower tumbling. But isn’t that always the way in Gamer Town, where promising pitches are a dime a dozen, and few successfully pull off their daring dreams. Mouse: P.I. For Hire, the long-awaited indie first-person shooter spawned from a post on X, is finally coming out on Thursday after years of trailers and teasers, and at a modest $30 price to boot. Though its creators from Polish studio Fumi Games insist that the game’s look is more broadly inspired by the 1930s “rubber hose” style of animation popularized by Betty Boop and Fleischer cartoons, it’s not hard to see visual similarities with Steamboat Willie, the black-and-white character that preceded Mickey Mouse. A lot …

Scientists Cloned a Mouse, Then Cloned the Clone, Et Cetera. The Results Were Horrific

Scientists Cloned a Mouse, Then Cloned the Clone, Et Cetera. The Results Were Horrific

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Here’s the cautionary tale you didn’t know you needed: cloning the same mouse in perpetuity will produce horrific affronts to mammalian biology. A team of researchers in Japan discovered this firsthand. In a stunning experiment lasting two decades, they cloned a female mouse, and then cloned its clones, for 58 successive generations. But over 1,200 clones later, the experiment stopped, because by that last generation the mice kept dying immediately after being born, despite displaying no outward physical abnormalities. The findings, published in a new study in the journal Nature Communications, suggest there’s a hard limit to duplicating mammals. And to scientists hoping for “infinite” cloning, this came as a major let down. “We had believed that we could create an infinite number of clones. That is why these results are so disappointing,” study senior author Teruhiko Wakayama, of the University of Yamanashi, told Reuters.   “At this point, we have no ideas for overcoming this limitation. I believe …

Scientists Bring Mouse Brains Back to Life After “Cryosleep” Deep Freeze

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech The concept of “cryosleep” — spending prolonged periods of time in suspended animation in a deep freeze state — has been a mainstay in the world of science fiction. While the idea of slumbering peacefully while covering vast distances in space on board a spacecraft remains a distant dream, researchers are inching ever closer to turning it into a reality. As detailed in a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences earlier this month, a team of researchers at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg in Germany managed to return activity to mouse brains after carefully preserving the tissue in a glass-like state, a method called vitrification, before slowly thawing them. “If brain function is an emergent property of its physical structure, how can we recover it from complete shutdown?” lead author and University of Erlangen–Nuremberg neurologist Alexander German told Nature. Instead of suspending entire human bodies, like Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley in the horror …

Spigen’s New AirPods Pro 3 Case Is Modeled After the Original Macintosh Mouse

Spigen’s New AirPods Pro 3 Case Is Modeled After the Original Macintosh Mouse

Accessory maker Spigen this week expanded its lineup of case options that are designed to look like vintage Apple Macs. The clever new Classic LS AirPods Pro 3 Case resembles a the iconic Apple Macintosh mouse, so it goes well with Spigen’s Mac-style iPhone cases. Priced at $25 from Amazon, the case features the stone color that was used for the Classic Macintosh, along with a gray mouse button. The mouse button is actually a lock that secures the two halves of the AirPods case together when it’s closed. Spigen says that the lock clip buttons are meant to mirror the tactile feel and iconic look of the classic Macintosh mouse. There’s a dual material design that includes a polycarbonate interior and a TPU exterior to protect the AirPods, and Spigen added a lanyard to make the accessory easy to carry. To get to the ‌AirPods Pro 3‌, you can push on the button to cause the top of the case to swing open. The AirPods are able to wirelessly charge while the case is …

Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Mouse Review: For Collectors

Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Mouse Review: For Collectors

The original Boomslang came from the era of Xbox’s bulky Duke controller. We had just barely made it past the N64’s beloved three-pronged abomination. At a time when “ergonomics” was a novel idea to be explored instead of a defined concept, this design was a lot more palatable. It’s still a gaming mouse in theory, even if the vast majority of them will spend more time on a shelf than on a mousepad, so I do need to talk about whether it can game. Shockingly enough, it’s not that bad. The shape is unusual, yes. Compared to a standard mouse, the Boomslang is low-slung and wide. It feels like it was designed for an Elite from Halo to hold, their two central fingers and a thumb on each side. It is bizarre and ancient feeling, but it’s not bad. Putting your hand on this mouse, you have to rethink where everything goes. Your thumb curls underneath the main hump, and your pinky mirrors it on the opposite side. There’s enough real estate on the two …

Sweating may naturally suppress hunger, scientists find

Sweating may naturally suppress hunger, scientists find

Sweat does more than burn calories. It also sparks chemistry that can quiet hunger, at least in mice. A new study from researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital, Stanford University School of Medicine and collaborating institutions shows how a small exercise-made compound can dial down appetite through a specific brain pathway. The work focuses on a molecule called Lac-Phe and explains, step by step, how it can lead to weight loss by changing how hunger neurons behave. “Regular exercise is considered a powerful way to lose weight and to protect from obesity-associated diseases, such as diabetes or heart conditions,” said co-corresponding author Dr. Yang He, assistant professor of pediatrics; neurology at Baylor College of Medicine and investigator at the Duncan NRI. “Exercise helps lose weight by increasing the amount of energy the body uses; however, it is likely that other mechanisms are also involved.” This study leans into that “other mechanisms” idea. The researchers did not challenge the basics of weight loss. Instead, …

A new mouse model links cleared viral infections to ALS-like symptoms

A new mouse model links cleared viral infections to ALS-like symptoms

Recent research suggests that a person’s unique genetic makeup may determine whether a temporary viral infection triggers a permanent, debilitating brain disease later in life. A team of scientists found that specific genetic strains of mice developed lasting spinal cord damage resembling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) long after their immune systems had successfully cleared the virus. These findings were published in the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology. The origins of neurodegenerative diseases have puzzled medical experts for decades. Conditions such as ALS, often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, involve the progressive death of motor neurons. This leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually respiratory failure. While a small percentage of cases run in families, the vast majority are sporadic. This means they appear without a clear family history. Researchers have hypothesized that environmental factors likely initiate these sporadic cases. Viral infections are a primary suspect. The theory suggests a “hit and run” mechanism. A virus enters the body and causes damage or alters the immune system. The body eventually eliminates the virus. However, the pathological …
