San Diego Mosque Killings Were Mass Murder as Fandom

San Diego Mosque Killings Were Mass Murder as Fandom

The two teenagers who walked into a San Diego mosque with assault rifles on Monday evening wore patches displaying the Black Sun—a neo-Nazi iteration of the swastika—and had scribbled white-supremacist symbols in white correction fluid on their guns. They started shooting, killing three. Then they fled in a BMW one had stolen from his mother. In the car, 17-year-old Cain Clark apparently shot his accomplice, Caleb Vasquez, before shooting himself in the head. We know much of this, in graphic detail, because, within hours, Clark and Vasquez’s video-recorded rampage seems to have been posted on the messaging platform Discord, then on a website called Watch People Die. The tragedy at the Islamic Center of San Diego in many ways followed an all-too-common script. With horrifying regularity, a young man carries out a mass shooting with weapons bearing neo-Nazi or hateful references scrawled in white. The shooter typically wears paraphernalia designed to promote accelerationism: the concept that only the collapse of society can usher in an Aryan utopia. There may also be a manifesto pulling from …

People judge rap music fans as more capable of murder, new study finds

People judge rap music fans as more capable of murder, new study finds

New research published in the journal Psychology of Music suggests that people often form negative opinions about individuals simply because they listen to rap music. The findings indicate that reading violent or sexually explicit rap lyrics causes observers to view a hypothetical fan of that music as more sexually aggressive and more capable of committing murder. This provides evidence that negative stereotypes associated with rap music extend beyond the artists who create it and affect how everyday fans are perceived. Rap and hip-hop are among the most popular music genres in the world today, with millions of people streaming these songs daily. At the same time, the genre tends to be associated with controversial themes. Some songs frequently reference violence, drug use, and the objectification of women. Past studies show that these stereotypes can have serious consequences in the real world, especially within the justice system. In criminal trials, prosecutors sometimes use a defendant’s own rap lyrics as evidence of their poor character, violent tendencies, or even as a confession. Research provides evidence that mock …

Coronation Street airs Summer flashbacks in Theo murder investigation

Coronation Street airs Summer flashbacks in Theo murder investigation

Did Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) kill Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) in Coronation Street? As it stands, a mountain of evidence is stacked against her – and George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) is convinced that she was responsible for his death. Last month, following wedding celebrations on the cobbles, Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) found his body in the corner shop backyard. Attentions initially turned to George, who was noticeably absent for much of the evening, and then to his partner Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins). DC Kit Green’s (Jacob Roberts) theory is that Gary Windass (Mikey North) is responsible, though his alibi has been backed up by wife Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon). Earlier this week, George was startled to find a very incriminating page of Summer’s journal, that detailed her desire to aim a gun at Theo’s head. Summer was already looking visibly unnerved whenever the murder investigation was mentioned, and had even decided to move to America to escape the madness. She was furious to find George and Christina rifling through her diary, and proceeded to burn …

LAPD Detective in O.J. Simpson Murder Trial Was 78

LAPD Detective in O.J. Simpson Murder Trial Was 78

Mark Fuhrman, the former Los Angeles Police detective who gained notoriety for his part in the 1995 murder trial of O.J. Simpson, has died. He was 78. Fuhrman had been living in Idaho at the time of his death. Lynette Acebedo, the chief deputy coroner in Kootenai County, Idaho, confirmed his death to multiple outlets, saying, “There will be no other information provided through this office.” TMZ reported that he died May 12 and that he’d been battling an aggressive form of throat cancer. Fuhrman was the detective who found a bloody glove at Simpson’s Brentwood estate while investigating the murders of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman, outside Simpson’s home on June 12, 1994. That glove became a key piece of evidence in the 1995 trial. When prosecutor Christopher Darden asked Simpson, who was on trial for both murders, to try on the glove in court, it either didn’t fit or Simpson was intentionally manipulating his hands so that it wouldn’t fit, according to some experts. That led to defense attorney …

Jeenah Moon | Bloomberg | Getty Images A New York state court judge on Monday blocked prosecutors in the murder trial of Luigi Mangione from using some of the evidence from his backpack when he was detained by police at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, on the heels of the slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Gregory Carro said that because the backpack was not sufficiently in Mangione’s control when Altoona police were detaining him, “the evidence found during the search of the backpack at the McDonald’s must be suppressed, including the [loaded ammunition] magazine, cellphone, passport, wallet and computer chip.” However, a 3D printed gun, which is suspected of having been used in Thompson’s murder, and journal in the backpack, which was later inventoried by police at their headquarters, can be used as evidence, Carro ruled. Mangione is accused of fatally shooting the 50-year-old Thompson on a midtown …

Coronation Street reveals new prime suspect for Theo Silverton murder

The face of a new suspect in the Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) murder investigation has been placed on the evidence board in Coronation Street. Last month, following wedding celebrations on the cobbles, Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) found his body in the corner shop backyard. We know, from quotes from series producer Kate Brooks to Radio Times and other media, that the reveal of the murderer won’t come until late June or July. That means that, in true soap opera style, pretty much every Weatherfield resident will be questioned in the meantime. So far we’ve seen George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) and Gary Windass (Mikey North) questioned, though the full list of suspects include Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), Gary Windass (Mikey North) and Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson). Today’s episode saw Summer thrust into the spotlight, following her revelation that she was planning to leave the area for a new life at an American university. She looked visibly unnerved when DC Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) informed Todd that they were …
