This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. Tommy Shelby has been in our heads for 13 years, but even longer in Cillian Murphy’s. British TV viewers first encountered the Birmingham gangster in September 2013, when he rode a black stallion through the streets of 1919 Small Heath. For Murphy, presently sitting opposite me in a London hotel suite, the introduction came months before that, when he first opened Steven Knight’s script and realised Shelby was a part in a million. “I could tell that it was special,” says Murphy, a glossy amalgam of expensively barbered hair and radiant skin that belies his 49 years. “I read the opening sequence where he rides into Birmingham. That wordless, western style, it was instantly iconic, if that’s not an oxymoron. So bold and so confident. Speaking at the world premiere of The Immortal Man in Birmingham, Knight said he was “very, very happy” at making the feature in his home city. A whole host of Peaky Blinders fans were proved right last week, with their theories that Barry Keoghan would be playing Tommy Shelby’s son Duke being confirmed. Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man star Jay Lycurgo has reflected on reuniting with Cillian Murphy on “very different” terms, following their earlier collaboration on indie film Steve. The 28-year-old actor, also known for Netflix’s The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself and Channel 4’s Generation Z, spoke to Radio Times at Newport Beach Film Festival this week. Lycurgo was named one of the festival’s breakout artists, following a celebrated turn in Netflix original Steve, where he played a troubled student to Murphy’s embattled school headteacher. It’s deliberately on the nose, then, to have called the first episode Pilot. Love Story opens close to the terrible end, with Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon) fretting over a red manicure (not demure enough) as the paps stake out the salon. They’re late to the airstrip, and unnerved to discover her husband has dispensed with his crutches (he flew on a broken ankle) and with an instructor. Carolyn and John Jr (Paul Anthony Kelly) squabble as Lauren (Sydney Lemmon) plays peacemaker, and they ultimately kiss and make up on the runway before flying into the sunset. It’s a bold move, like opening a Diana biopic with her as she’s driven into the Pont de L’Alma tunnel. Source link
