Cillian Murphy turns 50! His transformation over the years in photos

Cillian Murphy turned the big 5-0 on May 25 and has become a household name through his successful decades-long career. In celebration of his big milestone birthday, we’ve delved into his impressive career below, which started long before he became an Academy Award winner. Cillian’s earlier years © WireImage Cillian got his start  by writing songs, playing the guitar and performing for his family at 10 years old. While attending the Catholic school, Presentation Brothers College, he participated in a drama program overseen by the Corcadorca Theatre Company. In his early 20s, he was part of the band The Sons of Mr. Green Genes with his brother Páidi. Cillian’s initial dream was to become a rockstar instead of an actor. The duo were offered an Acid Jazz Records deal, however, because Páidi was still a student and the deal amount was low, they turned it down. Is Demna the Ryan Murphy of Fashion?

Is Demna the Ryan Murphy of Fashion?

My mom first took me to New York in the summer of 2011. Naturally, we hit Times Square first—a perfunctory ritual for any virgin tourist. I felt like I’d stepped into a Nam June Paik video installation where competing billboard ads for American Eagle, Domino’s, and Glee coalesced into a chorus of commerce, hijacking my attention from all angles. I had found the control room of the monoculture. When Demna took over Times Square for his first Gucci cruise show this week, he clarified his intentions for reviving the brand: Gucci should be everything, everywhere, all at once, coming at you 24/7 in 8K and surround sound. He called the show “GucciCore,” and even from the livestream, the spectacle was awesome: a smirking Tom Brady garbed as a Gucci’d down leather daddy; Mariah Carey, Kim Kardashian, and Lady Bunny seated front row; 50 screens blasting ads for fake Gucci products. At the Italian label, Demna is evolving the populist approach to fashion that became his signature at Balenciaga. But this time he’s abandoning the high-minded …

Ethics in Business, James Murphy

Ethics in Business, James Murphy

Several years ago, I took over teaching an interdisciplinary elective in the Management Department at Loyola’s Quinlan School of Business entitled “Ethics, Economics, and Entrepreneurship.” Loyola’s Jesuit Mission, especially the Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm’s emphasis on cura personalis, care for the whole person, places a high emphasis on critical thinking. So I decided to try and build a syllabus that would allow the students to criticize the content of the class I usually teach, “Ethics in Business,” a core class in Quinlan’s curriculum that every student is required to take. This syllabus thus addresses the “dark side” of capitalist social dynamics through the lens of Joseph Schumpeter’s concept of creative destruction, focusing on those initial, often institutionally unstructured moments after a successful innovation disrupts a given market or industry. We begin the class by reading Smith’s famous passage on “the little boy who wanted to play” from The Wealth of Nations, opening the class with the idea that one of the main drivers of “innovation” is the desire to be free from work. From there, we …

Shaun Murphy criticises Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump’s conduct before World Snooker Championship

Shaun Murphy criticises Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump’s conduct before World Snooker Championship

Shaun Murphy has criticised fellow former world champions Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump for missing the launch of the 2026 World Championship in Sheffield. This year’s players gathered in Tudor Square outside the Crucible Theatre on Friday for a green-carpet ceremony celebrating the relationship between snooker and Sheffield, before media commitments with press and broadcasters inside the venue. But O’Sullivan and Trump did not appear and unless they can provide a valid reason for their absence, such as a medical issue, they face a sanction from the World Snooker Tour. Murphy said: “I think it’s become normal that they don’t turn up for these types of things. I think it’s a real shame, and they probably could both have done a little bit more to help promote the game over the years. “I think it might give those two an image problem when the public tag onto that and realise that two of the biggest stars of the game weren’t here for the opening day. It’s a strange one.” Shaun Murphy has criticised Ronnie O’Sullivan …

Shaun Murphy explains why he is no longer working for BBC before World Championship first round

Shaun Murphy explains why he is no longer working for BBC before World Championship first round

Shaun Murphy has revealed that he will not be working as a pundit or commentator for this year’s Snooker World Championship after failing to agree new contract terms with the BBC. The 43-year-old former World Champion has worked with the BBC since 2021 as a broadcaster offering his views as both a snooker pundit and commentator across multiple Triple Crown events including the World Championship in Sheffield. One of the reasons for his departure is that he wants to be able to focus more on his own snooker after an impressive season has seen him claim his first ever British Open title and reach the semi-finals of the UK Championship. Murphy also revealed that he could not come to new terms with the BBC and stepped away from negotiations at the previously agreed rate. “No, [it was] nothing to do with trying to prepare properly for the tournament,” Murphy explained ahead of his first round match at the Crucible. “We were in negotiations with the powers-that-be and we couldn’t come to an agreement on terms. …
