Trump, journalists to meet at White House correspondents’ dinner

Donald Trump’s expected attendance at Saturday’s annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, for the first time as president, will put his administration’s often-contentious relationship with the press on full public display. Trump will be watched closely at the event held by the organization of reporters who cover him and his administration. Past presidents who have attended have generally spoken about the importance of free speech and the First Amendment, adding in some light roasts about individual journalists. The Republican president did not attend during his first term or the first year of his second. He came as a guest in 2011, sitting in the audience as President Barack Obama, a Democrat, made some jokes about the New York real estate developer. Trump also attended as a private citizen in 2015. Past dinners have also featured comedians who poke at presidents. This year, the group opted to hire mentalist Oz Pearlman as the featured entertainment. Trump’s planned appearance is rekindling a longer running debate about the dinner and events like it — in particular, …

Judge blocks restrictive Pentagon press access policy

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth holds a briefing with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, amid the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., U.S., March 19, 2026. Evan Vucci | Reuters A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration’s restrictive Pentagon press access policy, which threatens journalists with being branded security risks if they seek information not authorized for public release. The lawsuit by the New York Times in the Washington D.C. federal court alleged that policy changes by the Defense Department last year gave it free rein to freeze out reporters and news outlets over coverage the department did not like, in violation of the Constitution’s protections for free speech and due process. President Donald Trump’s administration has denied that characterization and said the policy is reasonable and necessary to protect the military. The changes approved under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in October 2025 state that journalists can be deemed security risks and have their press badges revoked if they solicit unauthorized military personnel …

Saul Loeb | AFP | Getty Images Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr on Saturday blasted broadcasters shortly after President Donald Trump called reports that Iran struck five U.S. tanker planes “fake news.”  In a post on X, Carr also warned that broadcasters will lose their licenses if they don’t “operate in the public interest.”  “Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions – also known as the fake news – have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up,” Carr wrote in the post, which attached Trump’s statement on Truth Social earlier Saturday.  “It is very important to bring trust back into media, which has earned itself the label of fake news,” Carr added. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that five refueling tankers were struck during an Iranian missile strike on the Prince Sultan air …

Thomas Massie called on Howard Lutnick to resign amid revelations that the Commerce secretary had more extensive business and personal dealings with deceased sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein than previously disclosed. Massie’s remarks come after The New York Times reported Sunday that Lutnick interacted “regularly” with Epstein, according to files released by the Department of Justice relating to the notorious sex offender. Massie, R-Ky., was the lead Republican on the Epstein Files Transparency Act that compelled the release of the Epstein files. “He should just resign,” Massie said on CNN’s “Inside Politics Sunday.” “Howard Lutnick clearly went to the island if we believe what’s in these files; he was in business with Jeffrey Epstein, and this was many years after Jeffrey Epstein was convicted,” Massie said. “He’s got a lot to answer for, but really, he should make life easier on the president, …
