Trump’s comments on the subpoenas came a day after the DOJ told a New York federal judge it was withdrawing those subpoenas for grand jury testimony by Times reporters and their phone records. The DOJ is investigating the leak of concerns about the security measures on the president’s Qatari-donated plane, which the Times wrote about earlier in July. Credit card giant American Express said its second-quarter profits rose 8% from a year earlier, helped by higher spending by its card members, fewer delinquencies and more customers signing up for its premium products like the Platinum Card and Gold Card. The New York-based company said Friday it earned $3.11 billion, or $4.53 a share, compared to $2.89 billion, or $4.08 a share, in the same period a year earlier. The results beat analysts’ forecasts, who were looking for AmEx to earn a profit of $4.40 a share, according to FactSet. AmEx continues to benefit from global economic growth that has disproportionately benefited the wealthy and high net worth individuals, as its customer bases skews heavily toward those demographics with the Platinum Card, Gold Card and other high-end credit cards. Its customers often put almost all of their spending on credit cards, and pay those cards off at the end of each month. The average AmEx customers spent $6,759 on their cards in the quarter, up from $6,393 in the same period a year earlier. …

The move came at a hearing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, where Judge Arun Subramanian had warned a prosecutor, Sean Buckley, that he would quash the subpoenas at the request of The Times if the DOJ did not withdraw them, according to MS NOW. “Why isn’t that the right outcome?” Subramanian asked Buckley, who argued at length that the subpoenas were lawfully issued. SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota cannot enforce its abortion advertising ban against a reproductive health nonprofit, a federal judge ruled Friday. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler issued a preliminary injunction blocking South Dakota from enforcing the recently adopted state law against New York-based Mayday Health and plaintiff Nancy Turbak Berry. The judge said the nonprofit was likely to win the case. Signed in March, the law prohibits the distribution and advertisement for unlawful abortion services, like abortion pills, in South Dakota. Friday’s ruling does not strike down the law. The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit in May against Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden and Attorney General Marty Jackley, arguing the abortion advertising ban violates freedom of speech.
