The 19 Most Exciting Cars at the Beijing Auto Show 2026

The 19 Most Exciting Cars at the Beijing Auto Show 2026

While major motor shows in Europe and the United States are being forced to downsize or change their format, those in China continue to expand. With 1,451 vehicles on display, including 181 world premieres, the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2026 (also known as Auto China 2026) has become the largest auto show in history—and that’s in terms of both exhibition space and the number of vehicles on display. This fact itself reflects a shift in the center of gravity of the automotive industry, but that’s not all. A much larger structural transformation is actually taking place in China today. Previously, the focus was on low-priced electric vehicle models, but now price is no longer the primary point of competition. At the show, not only were there many high-end EVs and large SUVs from Chinese manufacturers equipped with advanced driver-assistance technologies and AI functions, but these technologies are also rapidly spreading to the lower price range. Chinese manufacturers’ cars offer many technologically impressive features. Lidar sensors, which use lasers for advanced driver assistance, are now …

Nissan recalls batch of new LEAF EVs in Japan over battery defect

The new LEAF EV is a cornerstone of Nissan’s comeback plan, but it’s already facing a recall in Japan due to a battery defect. Nissan recalls new LEAF EVs in Japan Nissan issued a recall in Japan for the new LEAF on March 27 due to a high-voltage battery issue. In a statement, Nissan said the recall was due to improperly manufactured electrode plates used in the battery cells, which could cause fragments to adhere to the modules. If the battery is repeatedly charged, it can short-circuit, triggering a malfunction warning or, in the worst-case scenario, overheating or even catching fire. Only one fire has been reported, involving a B7 LEAF with the 78 kWh battery owned by a Nissan dealer. However, it’s still under investigation whether the battery caused the fire. How Nissan improved the wireless charging pad for faster phone juice-ups

How Nissan improved the wireless charging pad for faster phone juice-ups

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. In-car wireless chargers are notoriously finicky. Your phone can slide off the slippery charging pad at a sudden stop,  or overheat and stop charging; the case can also prevent your phone from connecting. Often, it’s a pain in the neck, not to mention an added distraction while you’re behind the wheel. Different manufacturers have tried various solutions, like Ram’s grippy upright charger, which features an anti-slip mat and an LED indicator that makes it clear when the phone is charging. However, online Ram forums and Reddit show that users still find their phones overheat, fail to charge, or require removing protective cases to work. No car manufacturer has really solved this most modern problem—yet. Automaker Nissan is staking its claim on wireless charging with its 2026 Pathfinder and Murano vehicles, both of which feature newly designed, built-in wireless chargers that keep your gadgets cool and in place while you’re on the move. Plus, Nissan says it’s the first automaker …
