This Animation Startup Wants to Make It Easier to Tell Open-Ended Stories

The current wave of generative AI animation often feels like a magic trick that only works once. You type in a prompt, a video appears, and if you don’t like the result — maybe the feet are all wonky, which is a regular issue with AI generations — your only real option is to try a different prompt. This “black box” approach is exactly what Cartwheel, a new 3D animation startup, is trying to dismantle.  Andrew Carr and Jonathan Jarvis, two veterans with roots at OpenAI and Google, respectively, founded the company, which is working to build a future where AI handles the technical drudgery of animation while leaving the creative soul to the artist. I spoke with Carr and Jarvis about launching their company, defining “taste” with AI, and the technical and creative difficulties of animation in 2026.  What sets Cartwheel apart  According to the founders, one of the biggest hurdles in this space is that 3D motion data is remarkably scarce compared to the endless oceans of text and images available online that …

Trump’s ‘Four-To-Five Week’ Iran ‘Excursion’ Now Appears Open-Ended

Trump’s ‘Four-To-Five Week’ Iran ‘Excursion’ Now Appears Open-Ended

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has refused to provide a time frame for ending Donald Trump’s war against Iran, which the former Fox News host earlier this month said could be over by Saturday. Hegseth told reporters at a Pentagon briefing that while the United States’ largest war in two decades was “on track,” it would end only when Trump wanted it to end and that he could not set a date. “It will be at the president’s choosing ultimately where we say, hey, we’ve achieved what we need to on behalf of the American people to ensure our security. So no, no time set on that, but we’re very much on track,” he said. At a White House photo opportunity a few hours later with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Trump was not asked about the duration of the Iran war but claimed, yet again, that it was going better than planned. “I would say we are substantially ahead of schedule,” he said. Trump at the outset of the attacks said the war was …

‘Night Manager’ Stars Diego Calva and Camila Morrone on a Painful Season 2 Ending and Open-Ended Season 3

[This story contains major spoilers from the season two finale of The Night Manager.] Diego Calva always knew that Teddy Dos Santos’ story could only end one way on The Night Manager. In the long-awaited second season of the BBC/Prime Video spy thriller, Calva was introduced as Jonathan Pine’s (Tom Hiddleston) new antagonist, a young Mexican-Colombian arms dealer who turns out to be the biological son of Pine’s archnemesis Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie). Following the suspicious death of his superior Rex Mayhew (Douglas Hodge), who had been investigating a potential high-level leak within MI6 connected to the shipment of weapons to Colombia, Pine secretly infiltrated Teddy’s criminal enterprise under the alias of Matthew Ellis. In Colombia, Pine crossed paths again with Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone), the woman he had tracked down and questioned in the wake of Mayhew’s death. Pine learned that Roxana was a Miami-based shipping broker whose company was owned by Teddy’s organization, and she had willingly participated in a suspicious shipment of machine tools between the U.K. and Colombia. Despite the fact …
