TBILISI, July 10 (Reuters) – A Georgian opposition politician was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Friday after being convicted on a terrorism charge for attempting to set fire to ‌a court building in the ‌capital last year, the Interpress news agency reported. Regime supporters and opposition share AI-generated images of Khamenei’s funeral

Pro-regime Iranians flocked to see the body of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as it lay in state in early July. Israeli opposition signal foreign policy change in style, but not substance | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Leading figures from the Israeli opposition have used the country’s prestigious Herzliya Conference to lay out their policy agendas, but analysts and observers noted that their foreign policy positions differ little from those of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling far-right coalition. None of the three main opposition figures – former military Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett, both former prime ministers – offered attendees at Reichman University on Wednesday much criticism of Israel’s recent wars in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list Instead, they chose to criticise Netanyahu for the manner in which those campaigns had been conducted and for what they frame as his subservience to United States President Donald Trump, who seems to have prevented Israel from carrying on its wars in Lebanon and Iran at full intensity. Addressing the conference, Bennett – who will run jointly with Lapid at the next elections – limited his criticism of the Israeli government to his insistence that Israel would fight its wars better: “After a …

Widespread opposition forces Surrey County Council rethink on faith school takeover plan – Humanists UK

Surrey County Council (SCC) has launched a second consultation on proposals to merge two schools in Guildford, after parents overwhelmingly opposed plans that would have seen a community junior school become part of a Church of England faith school. The decision by the Council to launch a fresh consultation including an option of merging with a school of no religious character, has been welcomed by Humanists UK. The original proposal would have merged Merrow Junior School with Merrow Church of England Controlled Infant School. Despite Merrow Junior School being the larger of the two schools, the merged school would have become a Christian faith school named Merrow Church of England Primary School. The consultation did not offer parents the option of a merged school of no religious character, and described the plan as the ‘only viable option’. This description was challenged by Humanists UK in its consultation response. Newly published consultation results show strong opposition from parents and the wider community. Among parents whose children might attend the merged school in future, 90% opposed the …

Council rethinks faith school takeover amid widespread opposition

Surrey County Council (SCC) is reconsidering proposals for a Church of England takeover of a nonreligious school amid widespread parental opposition. Earlier this year, SCC consulted on plans which would see the nonreligious Merrow Junior School merged with Merrow CofE Controlled Infant School. Despite Merrow Junior School being the larger of the two schools, the resulting school would be a Christian faith school called Merrow CofE Primary School. The consultation did not include a merged school with no religious character as an option. But newly published consultation results show parents in Guildford overwhelmingly oppose the plan. The plans were also opposed by the National Secular Society and local politicians. In response, SCC has now launched a second consultation which does include a merged school with no religious character as an option. If the faith school takeover did proceed, Merrow CofE Primary could legally discriminate on the basis of religion in hiring, paying and promoting up to one fifth of staff. One quarter of its governors would be appointed by the Church, and its religious education …

R.M.S. Titanic’s Plan to Sell Artifacts at Auction Faces Opposition

Back in May, R.M.S. Titanic’s plan to bring 100 artifacts recovered from the shipwreck to auction became public. R.M.S. Titanic is the name of the company that owns exclusive sales rights to the notorious shipwreck. The objects in question were among those rescued from the ocean floor in 1987, two years after the wreck was discovered and 75 years after the ship sank in the North Atlantic. Various government entities in the US and France had previously voiced objection to the company’s periodic attempts to sell items from the shipwreck, part of the reason why, according to the New York Times, R.M.S. Titanic requested that court documents related to this latest endeavor remain sealed. (A U.S. District Court judge in Norfolk, Va., which oversees salvage operations, disagreed and made the petition public.) A lawyer for R.M.S. Titanic declined to tell the Times exactly which artifacts they planned to sell. Related Articles A recent Washington Post article gleaned additional information about the proposed sale from newly unsealed court documents. The sale, which still needs to be …
