Outcry grows over Israeli soldier smashing Jesus statue in Lebanon | Israel attacks Lebanon News

A photo of an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ in Lebanon has sparked outrage in the United States, adding to the anger Israel is facing, including from parts of US President Donald Trump’s base. Although the incident is only one among a broad range of atrocities that Israel is accused of committing in the region in recent years, it garnered condemnations across the world and prompted a response from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In the US, where support for Israel was once unchallenged – especially in right-wing circles that purport to espouse Christian values – the desecration of the Christian religious symbol added fuel to the criticism that the Israeli government is facing from some Republicans. “You would never know it by consuming American corporate media, but this kind of incident is not rare,” said right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson, a former Trump ally. “The Israeli government has permitted its soldiers to behave like barbarians for decades, all while sucking up generous funding from the United States. The only difference between now …

“God has a plan for us all”: Gonzales announces resignation after outcry over affair

Rep. Tony Gonzales announced his resignation from Congress on Monday. “There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all,” the three-term Republican from Texas wrote on X. “When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office. It has been my privilege to serve the great people of Texas.” Gonzales was facing calls to step down over allegations that he’d had an affair with a married former staffer. The woman in question later died by suicide. House rules prohibit relationships between lawmakers and their staff. When news initially broke of Gonzales’ alleged affair, the congressman claimed that he was the victim of an extortion plot. “I WILL NOT BE BLACKMAILED. Disgusting to see people profit politically and financially off a tragic death,” he wrote on X last month. “The public should IMMEDIATELY have full access to the Uvalde Police report.” Start your day with essential news from Salon.Sign up for our free morning newsletter, Crash Course. In criticizing Leo and posting image of himself resembling Jesus, Trump sparks outcry from religious allies

(RNS) — A pair of social media posts published by President Donald Trump over the weekend have stirred backlash among religious Americans, including some of the president’s Catholic and evangelical supporters, who condemned his strident criticism of Pope Leo and an image he posted depicting himself as a Jesus-like figure. The first post, which was published at around 9:00 p.m. ET Sunday evening (April 12), focused on Pope Leo, who has been critical of the Trump administration’s actions in the Iran war. In a lengthy statement, Trump declared the pontiff is “weak” on crime and nuclear weapons, and ultimately claimed Leo was only elevated to the papacy to counter the president. “Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise,” Trump wrote. “He wasn’t on any list to be Pope, and was only put there by the Church because he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump. If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the …

Israeli death penalty law targeting Palestinians sparks global outcry as far right celebrates

TEL AVIV — Far-right supporters of a controversial Israeli death penalty law were popping champagne corks as it cleared the Knesset on Monday night, but its passage has sparked a global chorus of condemnation from allies and international human rights groups. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The new law effectively makes death by hanging the default punishment for murderers who kill “with the intent to deny the existence of the State of Israel” — language that targets Palestinian militants but amounts to a de facto exclusion of Israelis who kill Palestinians. Because the law would accelerate lethal punishments for Palestinians and is almost impossible to apply to Israeli murderers, human rights groups say it’s likely to inspire far more outrage and violence than it prevents. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a statement Tuesday that the measure is a “particularly egregious violation of international law” and warned its application to residents of the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip “would …

UK Green leader backs ‘Zionism is racism’ motion despite outcry – POLITICO

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel on Sunday condemned the motion as “one of the most hateful and racist documents I’ve ever read.” Polanski, the Jewish leader of the eco-populist force, said his support for the motion would depend on the definition of Zionism. “I can give you some different definitions of Zionism and we can talk about whether they’re racist or not,” he told Times Radio. “If we’re talking about the definition that this Israeli government are clearly perpetrating through a genocide in Gaza, then yes, absolutely. That’s racist.” He stressed that any of the party’s more than 195,000 members could put forward a motion, and he will be “listening carefully to the debate,” adding that it isn’t “particularly helpful to have an argument or a debate about labels.” Pushed on whether he would vote for the motion, he said: “I’ll wait to hear the debate, but absolutely, if the definition of Zionism is what is happening right now by the Israeli government, then yes, absolutely, that’s racist and I’ll vote for it.” The by-election …

The Paraben Panic: From Public Outcry to Public Harm

The Paraben Panic: From Public Outcry to Public Harm

Public opinion driven by fear has immense influence in our society, especially on science and health topics. A poorly conducted study becomes a clickbait media article that misrepresents the data, the study’s flaws, and the real-world implications, and it goes viral when other outlets pick it up. The claims circulate among the public and eventually become cultural belief. When those beliefs are repeated enough, they shape consumer behavior, corporate decisions, and medical practice—even as scientists and skeptics try to correct the record. The paraben story is a case study in how the irrational fear of chemicals undermines science and public health. What began as public outcry after media outlets amplified a terribly done study vilified a misunderstood and incredibly safe class of preservatives. Parabens are among the safest, most studied preservatives in modern consumer and medical products, yet ask a random group of people and they’ll tell you they’re toxic, causing “endocrine disruption” and cancer. They don’t. The science has been consistent for decades, but misinformation is winning the discourse war. The result? Public harm. …

Outcry Roils BAFTAs After Guest With Tourette Syndrome Shouts N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo

Outcry Roils BAFTAs After Guest With Tourette Syndrome Shouts N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo

At Sunday night’s BAFTA Awards, John Davidson—the real-life inspiration for the celebrated British film I Swear—shouted the N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo while the Sinners stars were presenting the award for best visual effects. The outburst followed an opening monologue from host Alan Cumming during which Davidson, who has Tourette syndrome, was involuntarily ticking. The audience had been informed of Davidson’s condition before the show began—but it was only after he said the racial slur that Cumming openly addressed the issue. “You may have noticed some strong language in the background. This can be part of how Tourette’s syndrome shows up for some people as the film explores that experience,” Cumming explained from the stage. “Thanks for your understanding and for helping create a respectful space for everyone.” After the incident, Davidson appeared to remove himself from the theater, according to Variety. At the Warner Bros. after-party following the ceremony, Lindo told Vanity Fair that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” while presenting—but that he also wished “someone from …

Large Area of Chicago Bans Delivery Robots After Resident Outcry

Source: Getty Images / Coco Robotics Late in 2025, a whole fleet of delivery robots descended on Chicago, where they clogged sidewalks, injured residents, and prompted a community campaign to ban them from the streets. In at least one major Chicago neighborhood, residents succeeded. As reported by Block Club Chicago, negative feedback against the delivery bots has become so overwhelming that one alderman has effectively banned expansion into his ward. Last week, Alderman Daniel La Spata hosted a community meeting with representatives from delivery robot companies Coco and Serve Robotics. The politician was seeking feedback on an operational expansion into the 1st Ward, an area encompassing the neighborhoods Wicker Park and Logan Square. They were met with urgent questions over questions about accessibility, data hoarding, and pedestrian safety, Block Club reported. Following that meeting, La Spata’s office began circulating an online survey to residents of the 1st Ward on whether the two companies should be allowed to expand operations deeper into the neighborhood. It got roughly 500 responses, nearly …

EPA finalizes illegal dirty air plan to hike fuel costs 76c/gal, despite public outcry

EPA finalizes illegal dirty air plan to hike fuel costs 76c/gal, despite public outcry

Lee Zeldin, Chief Saboteur of the Environmental “Protection” Agency. Photo by SecretName101 on wikimedia In July, the US Environmental Protection Agency proposed a plan to delete its scientific finding recognizing that greenhouse gases are harmful to human health, with the goal of making cars less efficient, deadlier and more costly. Public comments widely opposed the plan, but now before the agency has barely even started reading those comments, it announced today that it’s going through with its illegal plan anyway. (Update: This article has been updated to reflect that the finalization was announced in a press conference today) To recap: At issue is the EPA’s “Endangerment Finding,” which is the scientific basis of EPA’s regulation of harmful greenhouse gases. The endangerment finding acknowledges that greenhouse gases are harmful to human health, recognizing a scientific fact that every serious person has known for a long time – but now it was at least codified into federal procedure. The Endangerment Finding focused specifically on carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), sulfur hexaflouride (SF6), hydroflourocarbons (HFCs), nitrous oxide (N2O), and perfluourocarbons …
