A woman was stranded in Dusseldorf after her return flight to Edinburgh was blocked over a Home Office admin error. Liza Tobay was told her settled status had been “red flagged” when she tried to connect in Munich, in Germany, on a departing flight back to the capital. Liza, a German woman, was separated from her three-year-old daughter in Edinburgh as a result. The German national had taken her eldest child, aged six, to visit relatives over Easter. While trying to connect in Germany, Liza was informed at the passport control desk her settled status had been “red flagged”, reports Birmingham Live. Speaking to the Guardian, Liza: “I started to panic and my son started to cry. “It is the first time he’s been away for five days without his dad, so he’s been homesick already and could sense something wasn’t right.” Liza said she was unable to sleep or eat due to the ordeal and worried about being away from her young daughter for the first time. British pet owners who want to take their furry friends elsewhere in Europe have been warned not to try to dodge expensive health certificates by using a pet passport issued abroad. Before Brexit, taking a cat, dog or ferret to the EU was relatively simple: the Pet Travel Scheme meant an animal needed a microchip, vaccination against rabies, a pet passport and, for dogs, there were also requirements concerning tapeworm treatment. But since 2021 the process has become more cumbersome – and expensive – with the pet passport component replaced by the animal health certificate (AHC). This document must be issued within the 10 days before entry to the EU and is valid for four months for onward travel within the EU and re-entry to Great Britain. A slightly simpler process involving a pet travel document is in place for travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. Pet passports can still be issued to owners resident in Northern Ireland. A passenger checks her passport (Image: Getty) British tourists travelling to popular destinations such as Spain, Greece, France and Italy are being warned about a new rule that will soon apply across much of Europe. The introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), a digital travel permit that visitors from visa-exempt countries – including the UK – will need to obtain before entering a host of European destinations. Under the system, travellers will have to complete an online application before their trip and receive authorisation to enter participating countries for short stays. The permit will allow visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The EU expects ETIAS to begin operating in late 2026, although the exact launch date has not yet been confirmed. The new permit will work alongside Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES), another digital border scheme that will replace passport stamping with biometric checks such as facial scans and fingerprints for non-EU travellers. State Department Orders Non-Profit Libraries to Halt Passport Services
Last month, the State Department informed certain public libraries that they would no longer be able to act as passport acceptance facilities, due to their status as a non-profit/non-governmental organization. Understandably, this has sparked a lot of concern for these libraries and communities. I currently manage my library’s passport services, so I got wind that this was happening at the end of last year, when the State Department required every passport acceptance facility to submit an attestation of their status as a government organization. For most public libraries that accept passport applications, this wasn’t an issue, but libraries that operate as 501(c)(3) non-profits, such as the Otis Library in Norwich, Connecticut, were told that they had to end their passport services by February 13th, 2026.
