21 Shorts Under 0 for Surviving Sweltering Summer Days

21 Shorts Under $150 for Surviving Sweltering Summer Days

You don’t have to suffer under the tyranny of trousers—no matter how porous that linen gets—especially when there’s an abundance of shorts out there for the picking. You can find pretty much anything you’re looking for for under $150. And if you’re quick on the draw, you can have a whole quiver right as the heat dome seals us off like a Rubbermaid lid. There are all types of shorts, too: long shorts, short shorts, pleated shorts, baggy shorts, linen shorts, denim shorts, and basically any other kind you could imagine. So, if you have a strained relationship with truncated trousers, don’t give up on it just yet. Also, once again, it’s about to be asphalt-melting hot across the country, and having some shorts at your disposal seems like an easy reprieve from the heat. And because we’re under a bit of a time crunch, we thought it might be nice to have a roadmap within the shorts category, so scroll down to see what we’re leaning on in these scalding times. There Can Be No Winners in the Patagonia v. Pattie Gonia Debacle

There Can Be No Winners in the Patagonia v. Pattie Gonia Debacle

Now that Pattie Gonia has taken to the jury of the people, meaning the internet, she’s mobilized troops of progressive online sleuths who are siding with her (“keep the pressure on,” she asks her followers in a comment), largely because of a general anticorportation sentiment. (A representative for Pattie Gonia declined to comment for this story.) On the other hand, there has been a growing audience on TikTok and X who are skeptical of Pattie Gonia’s arguments and argue that her filing for a trademark would infringe on Patagonia’s. These kinds of posts and comments have been met with others calling anyone “defending corporations” all sorts of names, including but not limited to “bootlicker.” Alas, who is in the right is not to be determined by an online jury. On Saturday, Pattie Gonia posted another video on Instagram saying that she had been “blindsided” by the suit. She claimed Patagonia lied by suggesting it had reached out prior to the suit for a conversation, yet she appeared to be seeking some sort of resolution. (In …

Why Is Patagonia Suing a Drag Queen? A Lawyer Explains

Why Is Patagonia Suing a Drag Queen? A Lawyer Explains

If you needed any further proof that late-stage capitalism will eventually ruin everything you love, this week’s internet feud between Patagonia and a drag queen named Pattie Gonia should more than suffice. Patagonia, as anyone who has ever ordered a flat white or visited Colorado knows, is a beloved outdoor clothing brand whose colorful fleeces are coveted by everyone from boomers and tech bros to gorpcore-loving hypebeasts. Pattie Gonia, meanwhile, is the drag persona of Wyn Wiley, an Oregon-based performer, environmental activist, and the host of Save Her!, a climate-themed drag show currently touring the US. A tree-hugging drag artist and a granola-coded fashion brand would seem like unlikely foes, but thanks to a recent lawsuit—and the social media drama it has ignited—they’re now locked in an escalating legal battle. (Both Patagonia and Pattie Gonia declined to be interviewed for this story.) The public feud kicked off last week when Pattie Gonia posted a video explaining how, despite her best efforts to avoid it, Patagonia was suing her for copyright infringement. She entreated the company …

Patagonia trademark lawsuit triggers backlash by drag queen Pattie Gonia

Patagonia trademark lawsuit triggers backlash by drag queen Pattie Gonia

Drag queen Pattie Gonia is asking fans for help fighting Patagonia, the popular outdoor apparel and gear company, which has sued the outspoken environmental activist for trademark infringement. The Ventura-based company filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles federal court in January after the environmentalist drag queen submitted an application for the exclusive right to use the brand Pattie Gonia for marketing, activism and clothing sales. Wyn Wiley, who performs as Pattie Gonia, has millions of followers on social media and has raised nearly $4 million for environmental nonprofits. Last year, the drag queen raised $1 million by hiking 100 miles from Point Reyes to San Francisco. Patagonia sued Wiley for $1 in damages plus legal fees, saying it supports the performer’s causes but wants to protect the company’s branding. Pattie Gonia and their supporters are urging the brand to drop the suit. In its complaint, Patagonia wrote that the drag queen’s “products and services compete directly with the products and advocacy upon which Patagonia built its Patagonia brand over the last fifty-three years.” Pattie Gonia …

The Best Sustainable Surf Gear (2026): Patagonia, Billabong, Outerknown

The Best Sustainable Surf Gear (2026): Patagonia, Billabong, Outerknown

The suits come in a wide array of sizes and thicknesses, and their design has improved massively in recent years, adding better flexibility and sealing. This fall, Patagonia will launch a new U-Zip version of the suit, featuring a long zipper that arcs from one shoulder to the other across the chest. I tested it this winter and it kept me extremely warm and prevented flushing (when water gets down your neck), better than any wetsuit I’ve used before. They are on the pricier side, but they are durable and should last you a long time. If you’d like to save a little money, Billabong’s Upcycler line is another excellent option. I tested the 3/2 Furnace Natural Upcycler ($380) last year and it was one of the most comfortable, flexible wetsuits I’ve ever worn. Like Patagonia, it’s also made from natural, sustainably harvested rubber (Hevea, rather than Yulex), Bolder Black, and recycled polyester and elastane. It did start leaking at the seems faster than the Patagonia suits, but I still love it on less-frigid days. …

Penguin ‘toxicologists’ find PFAS chemicals in remote Patagonia

Penguin ‘toxicologists’ find PFAS chemicals in remote Patagonia

Penguins living along the Patagonian coast of Argentina can serve as living monitors of their environment by using small, chemical-detecting leg bands, according to a study from the University of California, Davis, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. For the proof-of-concept study, published in the journal Earth: Environmental Sustainability, UC Davis scientists outfitted 54 Magellanic penguins with silicone passive samplers placed gently around their legs for a few days during the 2022-24 breeding seasons. The sensors safely absorbed chemicals from the water, air and surfaces the penguins encountered while the unwitting “toxicologists” foraged to feed their chicks. Once retrieved, the samplers were sent to University at Buffalo-SUNY for testing, which revealed that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — often called “forever chemicals” — were detected in more than 90% of the bands, even in this remote region.  Magellanic penguins in Argentina served as sentinels of their own environment by wearing chemical-detecting leg bands for a few days during their breeding season in a UC Davis and SUNY-Buffalo study.
