You Can Usually Tell How Long Someone Will Live By The Age They Got Their Period, Says Study

It probably seems like forever ago that you might forget when you got your period, but think way back to that awful day that your monthly friend first arrived. Were you a late bloomer, or were you the first girl in your friend group to “become a woman”? The timeline of your body’s changes has always been carrying more information than anyone let on. Most of us were too busy being mortified about the whole experience to think twice about the timing, but researchers have been paying close attention, and the late bloomers among us might actually have reason to feel a little vindicated. While the age when you got your period was sure to affect your middle or high school experience, you may have never realized that it could have an impact on your health, too.  Getting your period early meant navigating locker rooms and sleepovers with a kind of secret weight no one really talked about, and getting it late meant watching everyone else seem to cross some invisible threshold while you waited. …

Paid Period Leave Needs Broader Cultural Change To Work Well

Paid Period Leave Needs Broader Cultural Change To Work Well

Expert comment from Dr Amanda Shea, who holds a PhD in molecular biology and has contributed to ovarian cancer research and is the fractional chief science officer at period and cycle tracker app Clue. This January, a menstrual leave petition asking the government to “introduce statutory paid menstrual leave of up to three days per month for people with conditions such as endometriosis and adenomyosis” was launched. It has since passed 100,000 signatures, and so has met the threshold for parliamentary debate. The topic will be debated in Westminster Hall. Menstrual leave already exists in countries like Spain, Portugal, Taiwan, Zambia, and Vietnam. But in, e.g., Spain, the law has “hardly been used”, The Guardian reports. HuffPost UK spoke to Dr Amanda Shea, who holds a PhD in molecular biology and has contributed to ovarian cancer research, about how to make laws like these more effective. The broader culture needs to change Menstrual leave policies like those introduced in Spain and Portugal “appear progressive” and “mark an important step in acknowledging menstrual and reproductive health …

Antioxidant in mushrooms may target uterus cells to ease period pain

Antioxidant in mushrooms may target uterus cells to ease period pain

Hot water bottles can ease period pain, but some people need stronger relief Carol Yepes/Getty Images An antioxidant that is abundant in some mushrooms has shown promise for easing period pain. A daily dose of a supplement containing L-ergothioneine, which is also in fermented foods, seems to limit the extent of this pain by targeting cells within the uterus, rather than just blocking discomfort that has already taken hold. “Instead of treating the symptom acutely when the pain is already severe, EGT [L-ergothioneine] acts as a nutritional foundational support, potentially reducing the reliance on strong medications and giving women a safer way to reclaim their well-being,” says Guohua Xiao at Gene III Biotechnology Co. in Nanjing, China. Period pain, or dysmenorrhea, is considered one of the most common gynaecological-related issues, but reports of its prevalence vary hugely, from 16 per cent to 91 per cent. It is thought to be caused by the uterus producing higher levels of inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins, which result in it contracting strongly to shed its lining. This can make …

BBC viewers entranced by ‘life-changing’ period drama – but it’s about to leave iPlayer

BBC viewers entranced by ‘life-changing’ period drama – but it’s about to leave iPlayer

Period dramas remain one of the most popular genres of films, and there have been plenty of spectacular ones over the years, including Ammonite, which was released in 2020. The film, which was set during the 1840s, follows palaeontologist Mary Anning, who discovered several intact fossils of marine animals including the plesiosaur, and geologist Charlotte Murchison, exploring an unconfirmed romantic relationship between the two ladies. The decision to depict a same-sex relationship between the two women, which had no historical basis, divided several, including Mary’s own family, with her descendants having differing views of how she was portrayed in the film. Despite the controversy, the film mostly won over fans and critics, with the film earning several nominations, including at the BAFTAs, the GLAAD Media Awards, the London Film Critics’ Circle and the Satellite Awards. It did, however, manage to win three awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Women Film Critics Circle Awards. Look to faith this Easter, says Starmer, during period of ‘real anxiety’ | Politics News

Look to faith this Easter, says Starmer, during period of ‘real anxiety’ | Politics News

This Easter is a time of “real anxiety”, Sir Keir Starmer has said in his annual message – as he says faith can offer “reassurance”. The prime minister released his statement as is traditional from Downing Street. He said that in ‘times when some seek to divide, the government is committed to working across faiths and differences, to build a country that is more resilient, inclusive and connected’. This follows a row earlier last month over whether Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square as part of Eid constituted a “domination” of public space, as argued by the shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy and agreed by Reform. A Passion of Jesus performance, showing the story of the crucifixion, was put on in the square on Good Friday. Sir Keir also addressed the impact on cost of living from the war in the Middle East. Denmark enter period of transition after missing 2026 World Cup

Denmark enter period of transition after missing 2026 World Cup

April 2 : Denmark’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has plunged the national team into a period of transition, ending a decade-long run of appearances at major tournaments and raising questions over the direction of its ageing squad. Denmark’s qualification hopes ended on Tuesday when they lost 3-1 on penalties to the Czech Republic in Prague after a 2-2 draw in the playoff final. The setback followed a run of damaging results, including a 2-2 home draw with Belarus and a late 4-2 defeat by Scotland that handed the Scots automatic qualification. For a nation that won the 1992 European Championship and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, the outcome marked a sharp fall. It is Denmark’s first absence from a major tournament since missing Euro 2016. The disappointment was heightened by the success of regional rivals Sweden and Norway, who both qualified, leaving Denmark as the only Scandinavian nation to miss out. “It must be one of the biggest debacles in Danish national team football,” former Denmark international Mikkel Beckmann told …
