Neighbour leaves residents fuming after erecting 7ft-high ‘Berlin Wall’ boundary | UK | News

The vast boundary has been compared to the Berlin Wall by neighbours (Image: BNPS) A homeowner has enraged residents of an affluent neighbourhood after replacing a boundary fence with a vast concrete structure that “looks like the Berlin Wall”. Ken Lynch has had the 75ft-long grey wall constructed along the side of his detached home on Sandbanks Road in the sought-after Lilliput area of Poole, Dorset. The area, alongside its neighbour Sandbanks, are among the most expensive and exclusive seaside areas in the whole country, with average house prices starting at £700,000. The imposing structure stands over 7ft tall and has been branded an eyesore by locals, with some likening it to something straight out of the Soviet Union era. Before its transformation, the home was a charming bungalow with an attractive front garden and modest brick wall that allowed passers-by to enjoy its vibrant herbaceous borders. The previous owner secured planning permission to convert the bungalow into a two-storey house with a sizeable rear extension. The property is now valued at £1m. The house …

Midlothian homeowner may have to rip out ‘intrusive’ decking built without permission

A home owner faces having to rip up new garden decking after complaints it overlooked their neighbours bedrooms. The work at a house on Otterburn Gardens, in Bonnyrigg, was carried out without planning permission and drew objections from three other residents. And when the applicant applied for retrospective planning permission for the new decking it was rejected by Midlothian planners who said it breached their privacy rules. A report by planning officers said the work was ‘neat’ and could not be seen from the street, but it said it raised the garden, which was already on a slope and naturally raised, too high while reducing the fence between the house and neighbours to less than a metre high. They said of one neighbouring property: “The raised ground levels within the application site allowed for overlooking to the rear windows and some overlooking over the garden ground . “However, this overlooking is significantly increased as a result of the new deck and new low fencing (0.9m high) above the deck allowing for clear and direct views …

UK homeowners to be allowed wind turbines in gardens amid energy crisis

Businesses, schools, and farms across the UK could soon install small wind turbines without needing planning permission, under new government proposals aimed at cutting energy bills and boosting clean power. The plans would allow these organisations to erect a single turbine, up to 30 metres tall – a height officials equate to that of a mature oak tree – without a formal planning application, provided specific conditions are met. Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated the initiative would provide businesses, schools, and farmers with “the tools to lower their bills and make the best use of their land”. This move forms part of the government’s broader drive for clean energy, framed as a response to the “current global energy crisis caused by the US-Israeli war on Iran”. In recent days, ministers have also unveiled plans for plug-in solar panels suitable for balconies, backed reforms to accelerate nuclear site development, and announced the upcoming round of auctions for renewable power generation contracts. Currently, permitted development rights for onshore wind are largely restricted to small domestic turbines with …
