The mass stranding and death of 55 whales on the Isle of Lewis in 2023 was caused by the mammals’ loyalty to their pod, a report has concluded. It had been thought that the unusually large incident on Tràigh Mhòr beach, Tolsta, could have been caused by trauma, disease or acoustic disturbance from military or industrially generated noise. However, the report, from the Scottish government’s Marine Directorate, cited “a convergence of biological, behavioural and environmental factors”, suggesting the long-finned pilot whales, a highly social species, died because the group had been following a female in the throes of a difficult birth. Dr Andrew Brownlow, the lead scientist of the investigation by the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (Smass), said: “The Tolsta event is a reminder that mass strandings are rarely the result of a single cause. Detergent company Tide has found great success with its Pods that let you pop detergent right into a washing machine without having to measure and pour liquid or powder. Now, the next evolution is an exhaustively engineered single-use detergent called Tide Evo Tiles—a dry, fibery, single-use tile that can dissolve in cold water. It looks a lot less tasty than the bright, colorful Tide Pods, so hopefully, fewer people will try to eat this one. Tide Evo Tiles have been in product development for over a decade. After spending a year in test markets, Tide and its parent company, Procter & Gamble, announced last week that Evo Tiles are now rolling out more broadly across the US. Admittedly, it’s slow going, taking somewhere between eight and 24 hours to fully extract, but the result is a smooth brew with lower acidity that’s easy on your digestion and a great base for cocktails and mocktails. While it’s a long process, it isn’t labour-intensive. All you need to do is fill the bottle with cold water and spoon some coffee grounds into a stainless steel filter basket, which lowers into the water and begins to infuse. It only took me a few minutes each morning and it became part of my summer routine. Grind says you only need 50g of coffee grounds per litre of water, which could easily make you three or four cups of nice strong coffee. Between uses, you can throw the bottle in the dishwasher, but wash the integrated filter and silicone stopper by hand.
