Four House Republicans Break Ranks To Help Democrats Pass Iran War Powers Resolution
The House on Thursday approved a Democratic-led war powers resolution aimed at restricting President Trump’s military operations in Iran, with four Republicans providing the decisive votes. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and forced to the floor with Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.), passed 214-208. Joining every Democrat were Reps. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.), Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) – the same quartet that crossed the aisle on a similar resolution last month. It will not end the war, or slow it. The measure is a concurrent resolution, meaning it never reaches the president’s desk for signature or veto and carries no force of law. Both chambers passed comparable measures in June. The war continued. This one is a message, delivered twice. The vote comes as the death toll among U.S. service members climbs. The moves were the first vote since Trump informed Congress that he restarted the war with Iran following the breakdown of peace negotiations. The conflict’s revival after weeks of a shaky ceasefire comes just months before the U.S. midterm elections. It threatens to scramble the majority Republicans’ plan to maintain their razor-thin majorities. The Senate on Thursday voted 47-49 to kill a joint resolution under the War Powers Act to force Trump to end hostilities with Iran. That chamber’s action follows a 214-208 House vote earlier in the day to approve a similar measure under the War Powers Act. China Test Fires Missile Into Pacific, Alarming Regional Powers
BEIJING/SYDNEY, July 6 (Reuters) – China’s military test-fired a missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific on Monday, state media reported, drawing criticism and concern from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan. A People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy submarine launched the missile, carrying a dummy warhead, toward international waters in the Pacific at 12:01 p.m. (0401 GMT), the official Xinhua news agency said. Xinhua described the launch as a “routine arrangement” of China’s annual military training and not directed against any specific country or target. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the launch was conducted “safely, in a standardised and professional manner throughout.” “We hope relevant countries will not over-interpret the matter,” she said at a briefing in Beijing. Xinhua did not specify what type of missile China had launched. Texas A&M study finds humans may have hidden regenerative powers
A mouse digit does not usually grow back once it is amputated above the tip. It seals the wound, lays down scar tissue, and stops there. That familiar limit has shaped how scientists think about healing in mammals, and about why humans do so poorly at replacing what injury takes away. A new study from Texas A&M suggests that limit may be less absolute than it looks. By treating injured mouse digits with two growth factors in sequence, researchers were able to trigger the regrowth of an anatomically complete, though imperfect, set of structures at the amputation site. The response included bone, joint tissue, ligaments, tendons, and a blastema-like mass of cells, the kind of regeneration-linked structure better known from salamanders than mammals. “Why some animals can regenerate and others, particularly humans, can’t is a big question that has been asked since Aristotle,” said Dr. Ken Muneoka, a professor in the Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “I’ve spent my career trying to understand …
