I quit ChatGPT for a free, private, and local AI called Ollama – here’s why

Jack Wallen/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Ollama is a user-friendly, locally installed AI. You will be surprised at the benefits you gain from this app. Not only is Ollama free and private, but it’s also open-source. Ollama is a small player in the AI game, but it should be much bigger than it is. This installable AI has several benefits you won’t find with the likes of ChatGPT, and those benefits are what keep me from ever using a more traditional service. I’ve written about Ollama quite often over the past year, but I thought it was time to share the reasons I choose to use this app over any other. Also: Want local vibe coding? This AI stack might replace Claude Code and Codex – for free (Disclosure: Ziff Davis, ZDNET’s parent company, filed an April 2025 lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.) What is Ollama? Before I get into the why, let’s talk about …

Queen Camilla’s private heatwave-ready swimming pool – 0.4 miles from London home

Temperatures are on the up this weekend, with many of us looking for some cool relief by visiting our local swimming pools and lidos. If Queen Camilla and King Charles find themselves in need of a dip while at their London mainstay home, they are in luck. Clarence House is situated just 0.4 miles from Buckingham Palace, where the royal couple have access to a private swimming pool. The pool has long been a favourite spot for the royal family.  The private pool at Buckingham Palace © GC ImagesThe palace features a private swimming pool It was originally commissioned in 1938 by Charles’ grandfather, King George VI, who wanted to ensure the privacy of his daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who had been having swimming lessons at the Bath Club. Later, Sophie Winkleman, the wife of Lord Frederick Windsor and former Peep Show actress, confirmed the Buckingham Palace pool was very much still in use in an interview with Tatler. Sophie detailed how the late Queen Elizabeth II insisted she use the pool to recover …

Her Private Hell review: An endurance test for all but the most devoted Nicolas Winding Refn fanatics

Her Private Hell review: An endurance test for all but the most devoted Nicolas Winding Refn fanatics

A star rating of 2 out of 5. With a typically provocative title like Her Private Hell, Nicolas Winding Refn returns to feature films after a decade absence. Premiering in an out-of-competition slot at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, this latest NWR – as he now insists on branding himself – outpouring is the ultimate Marmite movie. Some will love it, especially if you enjoy wallowing in genre mash-ups, sci-fi horror and Japanese fetishism. Many will hate it. Refn’s last film, 2016’s The Neon Demon, sunk into the world of an aspiring fashion model, played by Elle Fanning. Since then, he’s been locked in the streaming universe, creating two semi-impenetrable series, the Prime Video tale Too Old To Die Young (2018), with Miles Teller, and the Netflix show Copenhagen Cowboy (2023). This latest opus borrows heavily from both. Compared to his grittier early films – the Pusher trilogy, Bronson and Valhalla Rising among them – Refn has increasingly valued style over substance, to an infuriating degree. His greatest triumph, 2011’s Drive, which won Best Director …

Private religious practices are linked to lower blood pressure spikes during stress

Private religious practices are linked to lower blood pressure spikes during stress

New research suggests that engaging in private religious activities, like praying or reading sacred texts, tends to lower sudden spikes in blood pressure during stressful situations. The findings indicate that personal religious habits might provide a protective buffer against the physical toll of acute stress, while general spiritual feelings do not appear to offer the same physical benefit. This study was recently published in the journal Religion, Brain & Behavior. Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death worldwide. Psychological stress is a recognized risk factor for developing heart problems, rivaling physical factors like smoking, obesity, or a lack of exercise. When people experience sudden stress, their bodies react by increasing their heart rate and blood pressure. This biological change is known as cardiovascular reactivity. Exaggerated or prolonged physical reactions to temporary stress can eventually damage the heart and blood vessels. Scientists suggest that finding ways to manage these bodily responses might help protect long-term heart health. Past studies have noted that religious and spiritual individuals often experience better physical health and lower rates of …

Ban private jets and cut speed limits to avert UK fuel crisis, say campaigners | Environment policy

Ban private jets and cut speed limits to avert UK fuel crisis, say campaigners | Environment policy

Private jets should be banned and the speed limit on UK motorways reduced to 60mph as part of a pre-emptive effort to ease the looming fuel supply crisis, according to leading climate and transport organisations. The group – including Greenpeace and Transport and Environment – are calling on ministers not to “sleepwalk into a crisis” that could lead to severe shortages of jet fuel and spiralling petrol prices at the pump in the coming months. Instead they are calling on ministers to prepare now by lowering demand for oil in a fair and orderly way. Doug Parr, the chief scientist at Greenpeace UK, said: “Measures like lowering speed limits and banning private jets and short-haul flights would cause minimal inconvenience now and avoid much more painful decisions later on. By getting ahead of the problem, ministers can not only soften the blow for UK drivers and passengers – they can also cut climate emissions and put fairness at the heart of this crisis response.” The Green party leader, Zack Polanski, backed the idea of banning …

The Download: deepfake porn’s stolen bodies and AI sharing private numbers

The Download: deepfake porn’s stolen bodies and AI sharing private numbers

This is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology. The shock of seeing your body used in deepfake porn When Jennifer got a research job in 2023, she ran her new professional headshot through a facial recognition program. She wanted to see whether it would pull up the porn videos she’d made more than a decade earlier. It did, but it also surfaced something she’d never seen before: one of her old videos, now featuring someone else’s face on her body. Conversations about sexualized deepfakes usually focus on the people whose faces are inserted into explicit content without consent. But another group often gets ignored: the people whose bodies those faces are attached to. Adult content creators say AI systems are training on their work, cloning their likenesses, and generating explicit content they never agreed to make, all with little legal protection or control.  Read the full story on the threat to their rights, livelihoods, and ownership of their own …

‘Completely private’: Meta AI gets Incognito Chat

‘Completely private’: Meta AI gets Incognito Chat

A feature called Incognito Chat is coming to Meta AI and WhatsApp soon, according to Mark Zuckerberg. The Meta CEO announced the feature on his Facebook page and described it as allowing users a “completely private way” to interact with the company’s AI assistant. SEE ALSO: Meta made $14 million just off of these scam ads “This is the first major AI product where there is no log of your conversations stored on servers,” Zuckerberg wrote. He said the feature is similar to end-to-end encryption, which “means no one can read your conversations, even Meta or WhatsApp.” While the conversations can’t be read by the platforms themselves, they also vanish when a user ends their session. Mashable 101 Fan Fave: Vote for your favorite creator today! “To get the most from personal superintelligence, we’ll all need ways to discuss sensitive topics in ways that no one else can access,” Zuckerberg wrote. Instagram Introduces Instants, Meta’s New Private Photo Sharing App

Instagram Introduces Instants, Meta’s New Private Photo Sharing App

Instagram has a new app called Instants that lets you share unedited photos with your closest friends that’ll disappear once viewed. Sound familiar? Meta announced Instants on Wednesday, an Instagram-integrated tool that lets you photo dump to your mutual followers and friends. Instants won’t let you edit the photos you send, but you can add captions if you’d like.  If this feature sounds familiar, it’s because you can already send private disappearing photos through apps like Snapchat and BeReal. Similar to those apps, photos sent through Instants will vanish after 24 hours. The app also has an undo button in case you second-guess sharing a pic. The Instant app lets you share unedited photos with your closest friends. Jeffrey Hazelwood/ CNET To use Instants, all you need to do is open your Instagram inbox. You’ll see what appears to be a stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of your screen. From there, choose who you want to send images to — close friends or followers you follow back — and tap the white button below …

WhatsApp Adds Meta AI Chats That Are Built to Be Fully Private

WhatsApp Adds Meta AI Chats That Are Built to Be Fully Private

WhatsApp said on Wednesday it is launching an AI chat function known as Incognito Chat that is built to allow users to converse privately with Meta AI—such that Meta itself cannot access the questions or answers. The feature is based on WhatsApp’s Private Processing scheme, which debuted a year ago and already underlies WhatsApp’s existing AI features, including message summarization and composition tools. The idea of Incognito Chat is to create a way for WhatsApp to offer AI chat integration that does not conflict with the communication platform’s commitment to end-to-end encryption, the privacy scheme in which only direct participants in a conversation can read messages or hear a call. Most generative AI platforms now offer some type of “incognito mode,” but these features are usually designed to separate users from the questions they ask and the answers they receive rather than including a mechanism to entirely shield those questions and answers from the provider’s view. With Incognito Chat, WhatsApp will only be able to see that an account used the feature, according to Meta. …
