While nervous Skyscraper Live viewers watched the nail-biting stunt on Saturday night (January 24), they admitted to being distracted by the punditry delivered by its panel, made up of WWE star Seth Rollins, veteran sports anchor Elle Duncan and professional rock climber and mountaineer Emily Harrington. Much of the commentary featured live reactions from Rollins, who spent the majority of the stream — like viewers at home — in disbelief and shock at Honnold’s risk-taking ascent of the 1,667-foot-high tower. But viewers said the commentators continuously talked over Honnold when he was speaking into …

Michael B. Jordan on Sinners’ Record-Breaking Oscar Nominations

Michael B. Jordan on Sinners’ Record-Breaking Oscar Nominations

Michael B. Jordan admits he’s struggling to find the words right now. The 38-year-old is already considered a veteran of this industry, having broken out on beloved ’00s TV shows like The Wire and Friday Night Lights and gone on to topline franchise blockbusters like Creed. So today marks a true milestone, earning his first career Oscar nomination for his deft, layered dual performance in Sinners. “I’ve been in this industry for a long time. I’ve admired and seen the Academy and the other actors in the movies and filmmakers that I’ve looked up to and been inspired by my whole life,” Jordan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “To be in those conversations and in that company is a solidifying feeling.” But that’s only where the celebration can start today. Jordan’s is one of 16 nominations for Sinners — the most any movie has received in Oscars history. The filmmaker Ryan Coogler, with whom Jordan has been regularly collaborating for over a decade, is personally nominated for his directing, writing and producing (for best picture). It’s …

The results deliver the biggest single procurement of offshore wind energy in British and European history, signifying a major vote of confidence in the UK’s new era of energy sovereignty and abundance. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated: “With these results, Britain is taking back control of our energy sovereignty. Clean, homegrown power is the right choice for this country to bring down bills for good, and this auction will create thousands of jobs throughout Britain.” Powering 12 million homes with clean energy This auction round, known as Contracts for Difference AR7, will generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 12 million homes. The groundbreaking result puts Britain firmly on track to achieve its clean power mission by 2030. These results show offshore wind is cheaper to build and operate than …

The private deal for Action Comics No. 1, announced on Friday, significantly eclipses the previous record price for a comic book. That benchmark was set last November when a copy of Superman No. 1 fetched $9.12 million at auction. Manhattan-based Metropolis Collectibles/Comic Connect negotiated the sale, with both the comic book’s owner and the buyer opting to remain anonymous. Originally priced at just 10 cents upon its 1938 release, the anthology also featured a collection of now largely forgotten characters. But over a few panels, it told the origin story of Superman’s birth on a dying planet, his journey to Earth and his decision as an adult to “turn his titanic …

Record-breaking heatwaves will persist for 1,000 years, study finds

Reaching net zero carbon emissions will not bring quick relief from extreme heat. New research shows that once the world stops adding carbon dioxide, dangerous heatwaves will still come often and last longer, not for decades but for at least 1,000 years. The study, published in Environmental Research: Climate, looked beyond the usual short-term forecasts. It asked what happens after emissions fall to zero and the climate settles. The answer is blunt. Net zero is vital, but it does not switch the climate back to normal. Heatwaves were measured as runs of at least three days above the hottest 10 percent for a given time of year, using 1850 to 1900 as the baseline. By that yardstick, extreme heat has already grown across most regions since the 1950s. Human-driven warming is the main cause, not natural swings in weather. Here is the core result. The later the world reaches net zero, the worse heatwaves become, and the difference never disappears. Waiting even five years adds lasting harm. Time series of a) annual atmospheric carbon dioxide …
