Virginia Democrats Go All-In on Gerrymandering (With Some Regrets)

Virginia Democrats Go All-In on Gerrymandering (With Some Regrets)

Democrats in Virginia desperately want permission from voters to gerrymander the state beyond recognition. They also want Virginians to know how profoundly sorry they are to have to ask. “I believe that people should choose their representatives. Representatives shouldn’t choose their people,” State Senator Creigh Deeds declared on Friday, as he stood flanked by a dozen young Democrats at the University of Virginia. This is typically the main argument against gerrymandering, but for Deeds, it was just the windup to a pitch for his party to cast aside its highfalutin principles and start hurling spitballs back at Republicans. “We’ve been pushed,” he lamented, “into a situation not of our own choosing.” The situation to which Deeds so gravely alluded is the all-out redistricting war that Republicans started last summer in Texas. At President Trump’s behest, state lawmakers redrew congressional lines to bolster the GOP’s narrow House majority. Democrats, initially aghast but quickly emboldened, responded by matching Republicans with an equally aggressive gerrymander in California, which voters approved overwhelmingly in November. The battleground expanded from there, …

End-Of-Life Nurse Says These 5 Regrets Hit People All At Once At The Very End | Mia Von Scha

End-Of-Life Nurse Says These 5 Regrets Hit People All At Once At The Very End | Mia Von Scha

An end-of-life nurse, Bronnie Ware, recorded the top five regrets of the dying. Her book tells us what we can learn to live a fulfilling life.  Research has documented that the biggest regrets people have about their lives are related to “education, career, romance, parenting, the self, and leisure”. Knowing these regrets can help transform your journey. If you want to learn how to be a better person, keep some of these in mind daily with yourself and the people you love. The palliative nurse says five regrets hit people all at once at the very end: Regret #1: ‘I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me’ This came up as the most common regret expressed by the dying and is something that every parent should take note of, a reminder that your kids are not you, are not extensions of you, and are certainly not on this planet to fulfill the dreams you didn’t fulfill for yourself. Every child has dreams and hopes …

Regrets About Her New Book

Regrets About Her New Book

This isn’t Cazzie David’s first time releasing a deeply personal work to the public. In 2020, she published No One Asked for This, in which she wrote candidly about her struggles with panic attacks and her breakup with Pete Davidson. She also co-wrote and directed an indie film about toxic relationships, I Love You Forever (2024). And yet, true to form, neither of those experiences has helped to soften the blow of releasing another book. “I’ve been struggling to find ways to talk about it,” she says of Delusions: of Grandeur, of Romance, of Progress, which muses on turning 30 and all the existential crises therein. “It’s hard to describe a book of essays. This is so harrowing. If someone doesn’t like this book, it’s not just them saying they don’t like my writing. It’s ‘I don’t like your personality.’” David, now 31, is also grappling with the realization that her book may very well find an audience — an audience who will read stories about her life that she wrote without fully considering the …

My PC cost more than my car, and I have no regrets

My PC cost more than my car, and I have no regrets

Full disclosure: I’m not currently driving a Pagani Zonda. The automobile I’m alluding to in the headline above is an oh-so ‘glamorous’ 2014 Peugeot 108 hatchback. My second-hand car cost me around $5,000 three years ago, and yes, I have actually spent more than that on my current PC setup. Coughing up such a colossal outlay on a home-built desktop genuinely doesn’t keep me up at night. I adore my rig. It took a lot of time, sweat, and tears to get it fully functioning as it currently is, no question. There’s also zero doubt in my mind this is the piece of technology that’s brought me more joy than any other gadget during my four decades on this spinning rock in space. I have a PC problem. I’m addicted to buying the best-of-the best when it comes to cutting-edge PC hardware. Granted, this is a ‘problem’ of my own making, and one that has hit my bank balance hard throughout the years. Still, you love what you love, right? I wake up every morning …

BBC ‘profoundly regrets’ BAFTAs incident, says director general Tim Davie | Ents & Arts News

BBC ‘profoundly regrets’ BAFTAs incident, says director general Tim Davie | Ents & Arts News

The BBC regrets its “serious mistake” during the BAFTAs broadcast, the corporation’s outgoing director general Tim Davie has said. During the ceremony, as Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting an award on stage, a racial slur was shouted out by Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson, who was there to celebrate a film about his life. The BBC failed to cut the slur from its broadcast of the 22 February event, and viewers could see the offending moment for more than 12 hours before the programme was taken down from BBC iPlayer. In a letter to Dame Caroline Dinenage, chairwoman of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Mr Davie said the BBC made a “genuine mistake” in allowing the racial slur to be broadcast. He said: “I want to assure you that the BBC profoundly regrets the events around the broadcast of the BAFTAs on Sunday 22 February. “The BBC has apologised for the serious mistake that was made, in allowing a racial slur to be broadcast and then remain on iPlayer overnight …

Ex Sony CEO Regrets Making Seth Rogen’s ‘The Interview’ After Hack

Michael Lynton, the former CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, is looking back on the 2014 film The Interview with deep regret. In a recent excerpt from Lynton’s upcoming memoir From Mistakes to Meaning: Owning Your Past So It Doesn’t Own You, published recently in the Wall Street Journal, he opens up about how greenlighting The Interview, a dark comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco about a plan to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, was the “biggest mistake of my career,” because it led to the infamous Sony hack. Lynton was made aware on Nov. 17, 2014, by the head of IT reporting that 70 percent of Sony’s servers were irreparably damaged. Hackers released stolen emails that had confidential scripts and personal information. The FBI became involved with evidence suggesting that North Korea was most likely behind the attack to axe the release of the film. The movie was pulled from the U.S.’s major theater chains ahead of its Dec. 25 release after threats from hacker groups implied that moviegoers would be in …

Curling-Canada’s Kennedy regrets language in heated exchange but will not apologise

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy, Feb 14 : Canada curler Marc Kennedy said on Saturday he regretted using an expletive during a heated conversation with Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson during a round-robin game at the Winter Olympics, but added that he had nothing to apologise for after being accused of cheating. Tensions boiled over on Friday when Brad Jacobs’s Canada beat Sweden 8-6, with Niklas Edin’s rink alleging their opponents were double touching the stone during the contest. After Sweden and Canada asked officials to keep an eye on their opponents’ deliveries early on, there was a heated exchange between the teams’ thirds, Kennedy and Eriksson, towards the end of the game. Eriksson told Kennedy he would show him a video replay of him touching the stone repeatedly. The Canadian responded with an expletive and was later given a verbal warning by World Curling. “I probably could have handled it better. But we’re human out there and there’s a lot of emotions. I’m not going to apologise for defending my teammates and standing up for myself,” Kennedy told …
