If You Feel Like You Just Can’t Catch A Break, These 8 Reminders Are Worth Holding Onto

If You Feel Like You Just Can’t Catch A Break, These 8 Reminders Are Worth Holding Onto

You’ve had a really downright awful week. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Just like the saying goes, “When it rains, it pours.”  That’s how last week felt for me: My washer broke, my car got towed, my shower stopped draining water, I wasn’t getting my paychecks, my roommate and I got stuck driving in the snow, and everyone just passed by without any sign of acknowledgement, and that’s only the start of it. I know I’m not the only one who has had these weeks, because that’s life.  As much as it felt like I couldn’t catch a break (I almost felt like I was literally just waiting for the next thing to go wrong), it taught me a lot. Psychotherapist Leah Marone explained that our brains simply aren’t built to operate at full throttle all day, and when stress keeps piling on without any room to breathe, the whole system stays locked in response mode; it’s basically the worst. Some seasons of life just feel relentlessly hard, and when you get stuck in …

“Reminders of Him” makes the case for melodrama

“Reminders of Him” makes the case for melodrama

Before we get down to business, I have a confession to make: I wrote two whole paragraphs of the story you’re reading right now, calling the film “Reminders of Him” by the wrong name. That also means that, despite the title card appearing at the top of the film, I watched all 115 minutes of “Reminders of Him” believing I was watching a movie called “Reminders of Me.” Earlier this week, I believe I even referred to Vanessa Caswill’s film — adapted from Colleen Hoover’s 2022 novel of the same name (or, I guess, some name) — as “Reminders of Us.” It seems as though I’m entirely unsure of who is sparking the titular reminders of this saccharine, ridiculous, and oh-so-delightful melodrama. Though that’s sort of the point. There’s a distinctly mesmeric quality to these modern melodramas. Their specialness lies in their near-wanton absurdity. They are so fake that they’re real. And just when you think you can’t possibly have an emotional connection to what you’re watching, a sudden wallop to the gut punches the …

An exciting invitation? A postcard from a friend abroad? A payslip attached to a letter announcing company-wide bonuses? Accélère! Allez allez! Have a baby now! Before it’s too late! The overbearing measure is part of a 16-part plan to increase France’s birth rate. This strategy, rather than questioning the economic barriers to parenthood that the government could actually change, instead zooms in on infertility, with officials signposting to available help for those struggling to conceive. People Who Feel Lost In Life Usually Find Themselves Again Through These 7 Gentle Reminders

When I was 16, I thought I had lost everything. I was kicked out of high school because my mom couldn’t afford tuition. My dad rejected me, our utilities were shut off, and some nights we struggled just to eat. I felt powerless, heartbroken, and completely lost in life. And looking back, I’m grateful for those years, because they shaped who I became.  People who feel lost in life often don’t realize they’re standing at the beginning of something, not the end. Over time, many of us find ourselves again through small changes in perspective. These little truths help people who feel lost reconnect with themselves and start moving forward again.
