In Monaco, Pope Leo reminds Europe to use wealth responsibly

In Monaco, Pope Leo reminds Europe to use wealth responsibly

MONACO (RNS) — In a tiny European country where 1 in 3 residents are millionaires, Pope Leo XIV called for the responsible use of wealth and condemned the “idolatry of power and money,” delivering a moral appeal from one of the world’s richest enclaves. “Every talent, every opportunity and every good placed in our hands has a universal destination; it bears an intrinsic need not to be held back, but to be shared, so that everyone’s life may be better,” the pope said in his first speech in Monaco on Saturday (March 28). Leo’s words echoed through the square in front of the prince’s palace, overlooking skyscrapers and the Monaco Grand Prix racetrack. A small but enthusiastic crowd, waving the yellow and white Vatican colors, watched his remarks.   The pope’s emphasis on poverty and humility was also exemplified in the gifts he brought to Prince Albert II of Monaco and the local archdiocese: sacred images representing the medieval St. Francis of Assisi, known for renouncing his wealth to follow his faith. Monaco only extends …

FA reminds Man Utd co-owner Ratcliffe of responsibilities after immigration comments | News UK Video News

The Football Association has spoken to Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to remind him of his responsibilities as a participant in English football, Sky News understands. The intervention from football’s governing body follows Sir Jim’s comments about immigration. The founder of the INEOS chemicals group told Sky News that Britain had been “colonised” by immigrants who were draining resources from the state. It is understood that the FA advised Sir Jim that he should remember his football responsibilities when taking part in media interviews. However he will not face further action from the governing body over his remarks. Image: Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe later apologised for the comments. Pic: AP Sir Jim, one of Britain’s richest men but a resident of tax-free Monaco, had told Sky News: “You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in. “I mean, the UK has been colonised. It’s costing too much money. The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn’t it?” He later said he was “sorry …

This easy automation reminds me when my laundry is done

This easy automation reminds me when my laundry is done

Laundry is never fun. While tossing clothes into the washing machine is simple, the sorting beforehand, fluffing before transferring to a dryer (or hanging up to dry), then folding and putting away, can be a full day’s work for bigger households (and bigger wardrobes!) Add a busy schedule to the mix and I can’t be the only person who has tossed a load into the washing machine only to get caught up with other tasks and forgotten about it. Having to re-run the cycle wastes not only time and electricity but also money. That’s why I use a simple automation with my washer and dryer. This prompts me when it’s time to transfer clothes to the dryer or to ask someone else to do it if I’m not at home. Or it will remind me to take the clothes out of the dryer before they become wrinkled. Full disclosure: this automation, leveraging features of the ThinQ app from LG, only works with washers and dryers from that brand. But many other appliance manufacturers have similar …

This scam notification reminds me that nothing is safe

This scam notification reminds me that nothing is safe

Lots of scams come from surprise sources, like an email impersonating your bank or a sudden loud pop-up. We trust the apps and websites we use all the time not to throw scams our way, but letting your guard down can lead to you falling for tricks. Recently, I got a scam notification from a financial service I use. Its systems were breached, allowing someone to broadcast a sham that looked legitimate. Thankfully, I didn’t even consider opening it, but I’m sure many people did. It’s a good reminder that you should always be skeptical for your safety. This didn’t seem fishy at first I wasn’t interested anyway I’ve used the service Betterment to invest and store savings for a long time. While I’ve limited my phone notifications to avoid distractions, I keep them on for apps like financial services because I want to know when a deposit is complete or similar. I have them go to the Notification Center on my phone, where I can review them on my terms. Screenshot by Ben Stegner; …

In ‘Fallout,’ Justin Theroux Reminds Us He’s One of Our Best Corporate Villains

In ‘Fallout,’ Justin Theroux Reminds Us He’s One of Our Best Corporate Villains

Justin Theroux has a rangier CV than you typically see for an actor of his handsomeness. Of course he’s at home in prestige projects like the John Adams miniseries or the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On The Basis Of Sex. His friendships with alt-comedy superstars like Amy Sedaris and The State means he’ll pop up in the Strangers With Candy movie or play a charismatic commune-dweller in Wanderlust. He’s also a welcome presence in genre-crossing experiments like Netflix’s Maniac or HBO’s The White House Plumbers. Yet across his impressively varied work, one specialty has emerged: capturing the essence of an archetypal business sicko, pinpointed to the era Theroux is playing him—or, in one case, writing him. A quarter-century ago, Mary Harron’s film adaptation of American Psycho brought the specific look and attitude of the ’80s finance demon to the screen by way of Patrick Bateman, played by Christian Bale. But one gag of the story is that any of the guys in Bateman’s orbit—including 28-year-old Justin Theroux’s ravenous, sharply suited Timothy Bryce—is probably just three …

Spotify Wrapped reminds us even our leisure time is being surveilled and sold

Spotify Wrapped reminds us even our leisure time is being surveilled and sold

Each year as Spotify Wrapped drops, social media timelines fill with neon slides declaring who we “really” are. We trade our top artists and most-played songs like postcards from a year already fading. It feels communal, a party game to end the year of listening. But this cheerful ritual shows how deeply surveillance has woven itself into our leisure – and, how readily we accept it. It’s what the social psychologist and philosopher Shoshana Zuboff describes in her book The Age of Surveillance Capitalism the “claiming of human experience as free raw material” for predictive data. Wrapped does more than reflect our taste. It turns private listening into public connection, and connection into content. What looks like play can instead be seen as work. And what feels like recognition of our uniqueness is a reflection of how well we have conformed to the algorithm. No one’s 20s and 30s look the same. You might be saving for a mortgage or just struggling to pay rent. You could be swiping dating apps, or trying to understand …
