Reps Ro Khanna and Tim Burchett to push fraud probe across all 50 states

U.S. Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) speaks to members of the media during a break in a closed-door deposition with former US President Bill Clinton, outside the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center in Chappaqua, New York, US, on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026. Adam Gray | Bloomberg | Getty Images Reps. Ro Khanna and Tim Burchett will introduce a new bill to commission a nationwide waste, fraud and abuse probe for state-administered programs using federal funds, which was shared exclusively with CNBC. The proposed audit comes after reports of state-level welfare fraud erupted several months ago, drawing harsh condemnations from Republicans and some Democrats. The fraud allegations collided with proposals from Democrats to tax the rich to pay for expanded social services, which could surge trillions of new dollars into federal coffers. Khanna, D-Calif., who is separately leading Democrats on a bill to impose a federal wealth tax, told CNBC in December he would introduce the fraud probe as soon as he found a Republican cosponsor after some of his longtime Silicon Valley supporters threatened to revolt over …

Two House Democrats are demanding answers from FBI Director Kash Patel about his reported decision last week to fire multiple employees, many of whom allegedly worked in counterintelligence roles. Texas Reps. Menefee, Green advance to runoff as first midterm primaries show incumbents on shaky ground

Christian Menefee and Al Green. Al Drago | Sergio Flores | Reuters The first round of primary elections is showing how this year’s midterms will be taking place on shifting political ground for incumbents. That was particularly true in Texas — the first state to redraw its congressional districts last year — where incumbent members of Congress have been pushed to runoffs and another has been scuttled from the House altogether. Former Rep. Colin Allred, who abandoned his initial U.S. Senate run to pursue Texas’ 33rd Congressional District, is headed to a runoff with Rep. Julie Johnson, who holds the U.S. House seat that used to be his. Democratic Rep. Al Green, an outspoken liberal who has twice been ejected from President Donald Trump’s State of the Union addresses for protesting, and newly elected Rep. Christian Menefee will compete in the May 26 runoff for a Houston-area district. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican and former Navy SEAL with an independent streak, faced attacks from the party’s hard right that he was not in lockstep with …

What’s Better: Heavy Weights or High Reps?

What’s Better: Heavy Weights or High Reps?

This story is from Manual, GQ’s flagship newsletter offering useful advice on style, health, and more, four days a week. Sign up here to get it in your inbox. Ever since man first picked up heavy things and put them down again, the debate has endured: Is lifting lighter weights for high reps or heavier weights for low reps better for your gains? “I wish that heavy weights produced better hypertrophy results,” the powerlifter and PhD Layne Norton tells GQ, “because then I could sit here and feel self-righteous about it.” But he says that doesn’t seem to be the case. Norton cites Stuart Phillips, a professor in the department of kinesiology at McMaster University, who he also considers one of the best protein researchers in the world. Phillips was one of the first to find that, when it comes to enhancing hypertrophy (muscle growth) and muscle protein synthesis, low-load training, when taken close to failure, shows similar results as heavy weights taken to failure. In plain English: you can make gains without picking up …

Graeme Sloan | Bloomberg | Getty Images Two members of the House of Representatives asked a federal judge in New York on Thursday to appoint a so-called special master to ensure that all materials related to notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein are released by the Department of Justice as required by the law they promoted. Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Ro Khanna, D-Calif., in their request for that independent monitor, blasted the DOJ for failing to meet a Dec. 19 deadline to release all of the Epstein files. “The conduct by the DOJ is not only a flagrant violation of the mandatory disclosure obligations under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, but as this Court has recognized in its previous rulings, the behavior by the DOJ has caused serious trauma to survivors,” Massie and Khanna wrote to Manhattan Federal Court Judge Paul Engelmayer in a letter obtained by CNBC. The letter was …

Council unanimously agrees to end religious reps’ voting powers

Council unanimously agrees to end religious reps’ voting powers

The National Secular Society has welcomed Falkirk Council’s decision to remove voting privileges from religious representatives with reserved seats on the Executive Committee. In a full meeting today (pictured), councillors unanimously agreed to remove voting powers from the three religious representatives appointed to the council’s Executive. By law, local authorities in Scotland must appoint three religious representatives to their education committees, at least one of whom must be appointed by the Roman Catholic Church and one by the Church of Scotland. The motion, proposed by Scottish National Party councillor Iain Sinclair, said “only elected members of the council will have the right to vote at the Executive Committee”. A deputation made on behalf of the Catholic archdiocese of St. Andrews and Edinburgh opposed the motion. It is thought Falkirk Council is the tenth council in Scotland to have removed its religious representatives’ voting powers. Six councils voted to do so in 2023, the most recent being East Lothian Council in December that year. The NSS briefed all councillors prior to the meeting, saying voting powers …
