(The Conversation) — In the 1520s and 1530s, a man named Esteban de Dorantes, known as Estevanico, walked across the deserts of what is now Texas, New Mexico and Arizona – decades before the English founded Jamestown in 1607 and a full century before the Pilgrims reached Plymouth in 1620. Born in Azemmour, on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, he had been enslaved and taken to Spain and then across the ocean. In an ill-fated journey in which most people perished, Estevanico survived. He learned various Native American languages and became one of the first people from the Old World to cross the southern interior of the future United States. By the evidence of his birth in Morocco and the biographical information we have, he was a Muslim. His presence puts a question to the familiar account of Muslims in America as outsiders, particularly after 9/11. As a scholar of religion, I focus my research on identity and belonging, in places ranging from East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean to Islamic communities in the …

ATLANTA (AP) — Teboho Mokoena started the game with tears in his eyes and finished it with a smile on his face after converting a second-half penalty in South Africa’s 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic on Thursday at the World Cup. Thapelo Maseko’s long range shot late in the match caught the hand of Pavel Sulc in the area. Mokoena, who was caught on camera with tears rolling down his cheeks during the pre-game national anthem, stepped up to the penalty spot and sent his shot low past Czech Republic goalkeeper Matej Kovar in the 83rd minute. Michal Sadilek had given the Czechs the lead in the sixth minute at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Alexandr Sojka played in Sadilek and he slid a shot past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The Iranians include two women who face potential torture and persecution if they are forced to go back to Iran, their lawyer, Emily Trostle, said. One is a ‌Christian convert and the other is a pro-democracy ‌activist, she added. The U.S. State Department and the presidency in the Central African Republic — which recently reached a deal to accept so-called third-country deportees from the U.S. — did not ⁠immediately respond to ⁠requests for comment. Via Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com, Dr. Jerome Corsi says the Democrat election and voter fraud has to keep going or there will be “catastrophic losses” in the November midterm elections.  Dr. Corsi contends, “Democrat Voter Fraud in America is Legion.”  Dr. Corsi has a Harvard PhD in political science.  He has written more than 50 books, and many of them became best-sellers.  Look at what is going on in California with election officials still counting votes for many days after the Tuesday primary that just happened.  Counting mail-in votes after election day has been ruled unconstitutional recently by the Supreme Court (Bost v.
