Apple Now Requires UNiDAYS Verification for Education Discounts in U.S. and Canada, Adds Apple Watch

Starting today, Apple will require customers in the U.S., Canada, and Chile to verify their status as a student or educator to get educational discounts. Apple is adopting the UNiDAYS verification system that it uses in other countries, with a new process to accommodate homeschool families. Apple is also adding the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra 3 to its Education Store, which means students and teachers are now eligible for up to a 10 percent discount on Apple’s most popular wearable. Students and educators in the three countries can use the UNiDAYS app or website to verify their academic status with an email address from an educational institution, a student or staff photo ID, or another valid educational document. Eligible customers who homeschool can also be verified by UNiDAYS. Verification requires an identity document like a driver’s license or passport, and a homeschool document, such as a Letter of Intent or Letter of Acknowledgement. Most customers will be verified instantly, with UNiDAYS providing a decision in under 24 hours …

Mom’s Strict Rule For Her Kids Requires Them To Move Out After Turning 18

Mom’s Strict Rule For Her Kids Requires Them To Move Out After Turning 18

With such an unstable global economy to reckon with, a significant portion of adult children have made the tough decision to continue living with or move back in with their parents to save money that would otherwise go to rent. With how common this is becoming, it can be easy to forget that not everyone has that option. Some parents do not support their children, financially or emotionally, and believe that they should be fully on their own by the time they become adults. One woman who was in this situation shared how it made her and her siblings’ lives infinitely harder. A mom enforced the rule that her kids had to move out of the house within 30 days of turning 18. Writer Victoria Lemons described one of the greatest challenges of her upbringing on TikTok. “The rule in my mom’s house was 18 and 30,” she explained. “Once you turned 18, you had 30 days to get out.” She and her siblings all had their own ways of addressing the issue. Lemons’ brother …

“Civic Action Requires More Than Textbooks”: Chicago To Subsidize May Day Protests By Teachers

“Civic Action Requires More Than Textbooks”: Chicago To Subsidize May Day Protests By Teachers

Authored by Jonathan Turley, The Chicago Public Schools are facing a major truancy problem…among teachers. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) was up in arms over suggestions that classes should be held on May 1 when teachers wanted to be out protesting. Called International Workers’ Day, May Day is a global day of protest for socialist, communist, and unionist groups. The CTU was upset when parents objected that canceling a day of class for teachers to join a political protest was a burden for working parents. These teachers believe that they are teaching something far more important through their activism. In defending the demand for publicly subsidized protests, CTU Vice President Jackson Potter explained that “teaching our students what civic action looks like requires more than textbooks.” While that does not help with the dismal proficiency scores of actual students, it is vital to training students as political foot soldiers. The CTU and the National Education Association recently collaborated on a “curriculum build” to bring “social justice into the classroom” ahead of May Day. Dave Stieber, a history …

Helicopter Mom Seeking A Daughter-In-Law Posts Expectations & Requires References From Ex-Boyfriends

Helicopter Mom Seeking A Daughter-In-Law Posts Expectations & Requires References From Ex-Boyfriends

For some, getting along with the in-laws isn’t always the easiest task. One prospective mother-in-law, however, decided to take matters into her own hands so there wouldn’t be any doubts about her expectations for her son’s future wife. Domineering mother-in-law tropes make great characters in sit-coms and movies, but as they say, real life is stranger than fiction, and sometimes those over the top personalities find their way into our lives. That doesn’t immediately make them toxic or problematic, however. It sometimes just makes them quirky. What really matters is how her son handles this situation because becoming an adult doesn’t always turn off that mama bear mindset, even if it should. A mother seeking a daughter-in-law made a list of expectations on behalf of her son, and even asked for references from ex-boyfriends. X user @ask_aubry recently uploaded a screenshot of a Facebook post by a mother named Patty Francis, who seemed desperate to find a wife for her 26-year-old son, William Francis, and a daughter-in-law for herself. Patty began the post by listing …

How could I forget moving that piano for friends in Chicago? Fortunately, none of us ended up in the ER. One of the most important things friends do, though, might seem surprising: They help us get to know ourselves. Both in their 50s, Cindy and Ann had been friends since the second grade. Year after year, they never missed a birthday. Cindy would give Ann gourmet popcorn or maybe a sweatshirt from her alma mater, while Ann would give Cindy a special book on a topic that interested her, or maybe an old batch of family recipes. At one point, it dawned on Cindy just how thoughtful Ann’s gifts were. It wasn’t about …

Humanism After Belief: What Responsibility Requires

Humanism After Belief: What Responsibility Requires

Secular humanism has been remarkably effective at dismantling religious metaphysics. It has been far less willing to ask what it owes the people who must live without them. For many secular humanists, this omission feels reasonable. If a belief is false, arbitrary or harmful, then exposing it should be enough. Truth, after all, is a moral good which respects the dignity and rationality of human beings. But this confidence rests on an assumption that deserves closer scrutiny: that removing belief is ethically sufficient, regardless of the psychological and moral weight that belief had been carrying. It is here that humanism encounters an unresolved moral responsibility—one that critique alone cannot discharge. Dignity, Purpose, and the Human Condition Human dignity is inherent. It does not depend on status, achievement, belief or obedience. But lived dignity—the experience of oneself as a moral agent—does not exist in abstraction. It must be enacted. And enactment requires orientation. Human beings cannot live a dignified life without a sense of purpose that renders their actions meaningfully directed—not because their worth must be …

‘Volatile’ world requires Britain to get close to EU, Starmer says – POLITICO

But buoyed by a largely positive domestic reception, Starmer has since the new year hinted that he wants to expand negotiations to take in more areas — and potentially bring the U.K. back into large areas of the EU single market through aligning with regulations. “Brexit did deep damage to our economy, and the opportunities to strengthen our security and cut the cost of living are simply too big to ignore,” he told reporters. “So in the coming weeks, we will announce a new summit with our EU partners, and I can tell you that at that summit, the U.K. will not just ratify existing commitments made at last year’s summit. “We want to be more ambitious, closer economic cooperation, closer security cooperation, a partnership that recognizes our shared values, our shared interest and our shared future, a partnership for the dangerous world that we must navigate together, a world where this government will be guided at all times by the interests of the British people.” No date has been set for the next U.K.-EU …

Apple Requires App Developers to Declare Regulated Medical Device Status in EEA, UK, and U.S.

App Store product pages will now display whether an app is a regulated medical device, Apple said today. The designation will be shown in the ‌App Store‌ in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, and United States. According to Apple, regulated medical device apps may function on their own or as part of a system for medical purposes like diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, and treatment of diseases and physiological conditions. The apps may require registration or authorization from regulatory bodies like the Food and Drug Administration. App developers who distribute Health and Fitness or Medical apps in the EEA, UK, or U.S. will need to provide a regulated medical device status in ‌App Store‌ Connect, along with associated regulatory information. Apps that are marked as containing frequent references to medical or treatment information in the Age Rating questionnaire in ‌App Store‌ Connect will also need to provide the regulated medical device status. Apple says the status is required for new apps that meet either criteria as of today. Existing apps will need to provide a …

Good Espresso Requires Precision. Here’s How Much Coffee Goes in Every Shot

Espresso is one of coffee’s fussier forms, but advocates for the pressure-brewed beverage know that it’s worth every bit of effort to get that creamy, flavorful result. Coffee professionals tout the golden ratio for making perfect American-style drip coffee. Espresso has its own measurements, and getting them right is key to making coffee-house-quality shots at home. You don’t need a wildly expensive espresso machine, either, since espresso is largely about technique. If you hone your measurements and brewing skills, you can pull high-quality shots, even with a basic model.  When it dawned on me that I’d been winging it or simply relying on factory presets for espresso measurements, I decided to task an expert about the nuances of brewing espresso at home. And, specifically, exactly how much espresso should go in a single shot. Kaleena Teoh is a coffee educator and the co-founder of Coffee Project New York. She generously shared her thoughts, tips, and common mistakes to watch out for when packing pucks and brewing espresso. Espresso basics Splurged on an espresso machine? Make sure you’re getting …
