How Sylvester Stallone Rescued the First Rambo Film With a Radical Recut, Cutting It From 3½ Hours to 93 Minutes

About a year ago, a certain kind of cinephile took note of obituaries for Ted Kotcheff, a television-turned-film director who worked steadily from the mid-fifties to the mid-nineties. Even to readers only casually acquainted with movies, more than one title pops out from his filmography: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Fun with Dick and Jane, North Dallas Forty, Weekend at Bernie’s. The focus on genres, and their variety, suggests not an auteur but a journeyman, the kind of efficient, versatile problem-solver that used to keep Hollywood afloat. But occasionally, the work of a journeyman can achieve its own kind of transcendence: that moment came with First Blood, in Kotcheff’s case, which launched the Rambo series in 1982. Those who remember Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo as a headbanded one-man army bent on re-fighting and winning the Vietnam War, one bout of ultra-violence at a time, will be surprised by the relative meekness of his first onscreen incarnation. As First Blood’s story is summarized by the CinemaStix video above, Rambo drifts into a small Washington town after a search for …

The bull, named Sir Attenbullock to celebrate his birthday on May 8, will be mentioned in a letter sent to Sir David by Peta founder Ingrid Newkirk. The letter will tell him the animal was among the first rescued through Peta India’s Delhi mechanisation project. This initiative aims to replace animal-drawn carts with electric vehicles so the overworked animals can retire. In her letter, Ms Newkirk writes that Sir Attenbullock is “strong, yet gentle”, which she says he shares with Sir David, and adds that he also “quietly inspires others to appreciate the richness of the natural world”. She added: “He has a presence that draws people into his world, including visiting children. He …

Two mountain lion cubs rescued from certain death

Two mountain lion cubs rescued from certain death

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Mountain lions (Puma concolor, cougars, pumas, among its many other names) are carnivorous, sharp-toothed and clawed big cats. They can be dangerous to livestock, pets, and the occasional human—but their cubs sure are adorable. And absolutely vulnerable, when left orphaned.  That’s what happened to little Clover, an underweight and tick-infested mountain lion cub that arrived at California’s Oakland Zoo in March after being picked up in El Dorado County, northeast of the zoo. She had to receive a blood transfusion from another mountain lion at the zoo also rescued in El Dorado County back in 2024.  Clover has been recovering well, however, “her story is sadly too common,” the zoo explains in a social media post. “Mountain lion cubs rely on their mothers for up to two years to teach them essential survival skills. When a kitten is found alone like this, it often means the mother couldn’t return, too often due to vehicle strikes or other human‑wildlife conflicts …

Alex Brandon/AP hide caption toggle caption Alex Brandon/AP A U.S. Airforce officer whose plane was shot down in Iran was rescued by U.S. forces early Sunday after evading capture for more than a day in enemy territory, President Trump announced on social media. “The U.S. Military sent dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the World, to retrieve him. He sustained injuries, but he will be just fine,” Trump said on Truth Social. The officer’s F-15 fighter jet was shot down on Friday over western Iran, and Trump said “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History” was undertaken to rescue him. An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israel helped the U.S. with the rescue of the airman by sharing intelligence and by halting Israeli strikes in the search area. Elsewhere in the region, there was no let up in fighting, …
