Kimi Antonelli wins Canadian GP after George Russell retires from lead

Kimi Antonelli wins Canadian GP after George Russell retires from lead

No wonder Russell admitted to being “a bit lost for words” once he had finally made it back to the paddock, on the back of a marshal’s scooter. “I mean, everything just turned off all of a sudden,” he reported of his failure, which came at the end of the straight leading to the final chicane, causing Russell to go straight over the grass, cutting the corner, before pulling his car up on the side of the track. “The engine stopped. No electronics. Nothing. “I’ve got to be honest, though, I’m proud of my weekend. Pole in the sprint, won the sprint. Pole in the main race, I was leading after a good battle with Kimi. There’s not much more I could have done. So I’ll leave satisfied. I’m pretty damn frustrated, but there’s not much I can do.” The day had dawned dark, damp and cold, as forecast. With a light drizzle preceding the race, teams were left with a bit of a conundrum; whether to start on the intermediate tyres and hope the …

Swiatek retires from Madrid Open due to illness

April 25 : Six-times Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek retired from her Madrid Open round-of-32 match against American Ann Li on Saturday due to illness, trailing 6-7(4) 6-2 0-3. The fourth seed at the WTA 1000 clay-court tournament left the court in tears, having called for medical assistance during the match. “The past two days were pretty terrible, I think I have some virus,” said Swiatek, who won the Madrid title in 2024. “It’s been some hours fine, some hours pretty bad. I had zero energy, zero stability, and I just felt really bad physically. “I knew that (it was) going to be hard but I still wanted to try because I already have been sick twice in my career and I could still win most of my matches. I guess it depends on how bad it is, and I guess this time it was worse than before.” Swiatek’s withdrawal deals a blow to her preparations for the French Open, a tournament the Pole has dominated in recent years, winning the title four times, most recently …

Cardinal Sako, head of Chaldean Church in Iraq, retires as war engulfs the region

ROME (AP) — The patriarch of one of the most important Christian churches in the Middle East retired on Tuesday, setting the stage for new leadership as war engulfs the region. Iraqi Cardinal Louis Sako of the Chaldean Catholic Church said he had asked to retire to pursue “prayer, writing, and simple service,” and that Pope Leo XIV granted his request on the day he had proposed. Sako, 76, who had occasionally clashed with Iraq’s political leaders, said in a statement that he freely offered his resignation and was leaving “of my own will.” The Chaldean Catholic Church is one of the nearly two dozen Eastern Rite churches that are in full communion with Rome. It is one of the four that claim links to the ancient Church of the East, located in Mesopotamia, and is today prevalent in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon, as well as in the diaspora. Sako led the ancient church through the traumatic years of the rise of the Islamic State group in Iraq that devastated the Christian community. His retirement …

Emma Raducanu retires from Qatar Open after having on-court blood-pressure test

Emma Raducanu retires from Qatar Open after having on-court blood-pressure test

In a scenario that some will find frustratingly familiar, Emma Raducanu retired from her opening match in Doha after having her blood pressure checked by the doctor. It was a surprise, in some ways, that Raducanu even took the court for this meeting with qualifier Camila Osorio. She had looked thoroughly exhausted while playing the final – her first in five years – in Cluj-Napoca on Saturday, and was then only able to take one day off between events. Although Raducanu played some solid percentage tennis to claim the opening set – the first set she has ever won in three visits to Doha – her energy levels seemed to fall away as Osorio broke her serve midway through the second and then hung on to set up a decider. Few would have backed Raducanu to come through a test of stamina, and indeed she dropped serve again immediately before being visited by the doctor. Although she returned to the court for one last Osorio service game, she was barely moving as a series of …
