PARIS, June 2 : Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva returned to the French Open semi-finals with a 6-0 6-3 win over Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea on a rainy Tuesday to continue her run in a Roland Garros draw stripped of many big names. Now among the leading contenders for a maiden Grand Slam title with defending champion Coco Gauff and four-times winner Iga Swiatek out, the Russian next faces the winner of the all-Ukrainian clash between Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk. Speculation has been rampant since even before season three had even started airing that the latest run of episodes would be the show’s last. Finally, on Sunday evening, it was confirmed that the award-winning drama has reached its end. United States President Donald Trump’s claim that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has been largely negotiated may calm markets temporarily. But the deeper significance of the current crisis lies elsewhere. The issue is no longer only whether trade routes remain open but who has the power to condition access to them. The specific terms of any agreement may evolve, and any diplomatic arrangement may still be delayed, contested or revised. But the broader pattern is already visible: Strategic trade routes are becoming more politically managed, commercially exposed and geopolitically contested. The danger is not necessarily that diplomacy fails. The more important risk is that it succeeds just enough to disguise a weaker order as stability. Temporary calm is not the same as strategic stability. Calm can be negotiated; stability must be trusted. The most important shift, therefore, is not from war to peace but from disruption to governance. A debate about the role standardized testing scores should play in a student’s academic future has been raging for years now. Much of this discussion has centered around how useful college entrance exams like the SAT and ACT are. Critics believe that the SAT is biased along lines of gender and race, so it does not provide an accurate look at students’ potential. This led some colleges to drop the SAT requirement for admissions, but University of California professors now think that was a huge mistake. Hundreds of UC professors feel like students are unprepared for their STEM courses, and that SAT scores could help gauge their readiness. In an open letter signed by 794 UC faculty members, professors argued that students taking their college classes are woefully unprepared for the math they need to do, with some even performing at a middle-school level. “Over the past five years, we have seen a widening divergence in mathematical preparation levels within the same classroom,” the letter reads. “This trend indicates that current admissions practices do not …

More than 600 University of California faculty members, led by mathematicians at UC Berkeley, are calling on the system to reinstate standardized testing requirements for science, technology, engineering and mathematics applicants, saying that six years of test-free admissions has not reliably assessed readiness and professors are often teaching middle school math to incoming students. Without standardized testing in admissions, professors said they don’t know whether incoming students can handle college-level math. The open letter, addressed to top UC leaders, asks for SAT or ACT exams to be required beginning in fall 2027 and for STEM faculty to be given formal oversight of readiness standards in their majors. “We now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle-school mathematics while simultaneously teaching the material students need for sciences, engineering, economics, and other quantitatively demanding fields,” they warned. GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) — For many Southern California residents who were evacuated after a chemical tank overheated, the relief of finally being allowed to return home has been overshadowed by lingering fears of living near the aerospace plant that has faced problems. A valve on the tank’s cooling system failed and forced 50,000 people to evacuate in and around the Orange County city of Garden Grove last week as officials warned of the potential for a catastrophic explosion. The tank cracked by chance, relieving pressure and eventually allowing residents to return home after the temperature remained stable without intervention.
