Not long ago, autism was considered rare, but now it’s fairly common: Autism diagnoses in children have increased nearly fivefold across the United States in the past couple of decades, from one in every 150 8-year-olds in 2000 to one in every 31 in 2022. Adult diagnoses have also gone up rapidly in recent years. According to many researchers, a significant portion of this growth comes from a rise in diagnoses of milder forms of autism—cases in which people may have a normal to high IQ and typical speaking abilities but struggle with social interactions or have intense interests. Severe autism, in contrast, is generally associated with low IQ, little or no verbal speech, and a probability that the person will need some form of lifelong care or supervision. A study published last year found that the prevalence of autism with “mild, borderline, or no significant adaptive challenges” increased from 2000 to 2016, but that the frequency of cases involving “moderate to profound challenges” decreased slightly. Andy Burnham has suggested he could raise the personal allowance as he pledged to offer “tangible” improvements to help people with the cost of living. The Labour leader indicated he would raise the point at which workers begin paying income tax in an attempt to provide households with “breathing space”. However, Mr Burnham gave no indication how he would fund the potential multi-billion-pound tax cut, raising fears he may be forced to borrow more or implement a form of wealth tax. Ruth Jefferson received a 14% base salary increase in October, from £590,000 to £670,000, before other benefits, according to accounts published this month. It was far above the 3.5% given to workers, and put her pay at 18 times that of the company’s median employee. Water industry executive pay has come under intense scrutiny in recent years amid public outrage over sewage spilling into Britain’s rivers and seas. It prompted the government to introduce a bonus ban in 2025 for companies responsible for serious pollution, or which failed financial tests. Malaysian-owned Wessex Water supplies 2.9 million water and sewerage customers in south-west England, including Bristol, Bath and Bournemouth. A Trump-appointed judge, who previously worked at the Texas attorney general’s office, agreed that it was an unconstitutional overreach and struck down the policy nationwide.
