The collective Mino, who invited them, played the New Yorker’s long-awaited fourth album, Don’t Be Dumb, through immersive sound. Their motto: “Music isn’t something you consume, it’s something you live.” To illustrate the music on the big screen, the rapper’s label provided music videos and “visualizers” – short clips of A$AP Rocky rapping and dancing in various outfits: pink curlers in his hair, a megaphone in hand or dressed in a suit and beige trench coat. It has been eight years since A$AP Rocky, once and future king of New York rap, released an album. In the world of hip-hop, where even A-list stars such as Rocky’s friend and collaborator Tyler, the Creator are prone to releasing multiple albums a year, this is a lifetime. In the time since Rocky released his third album, 2018’s Testing, Kanye West has rebranded as a born-again Christian, swerved to the right and released five albums. Rocky hasn’t been sitting around: he’s been a press mainstay, thanks to his relationship with pop superstar Rihanna, with whom he now has three children, and last year was acquitted of firing a gun at a former friend, dodging up to 24 years in prison. A popular statue of Rocky that’s currently sited at the bottom of the stairs leading to the Philadelphia Art Museum is officially being relocated to the top of those flights. There is technically a sculpture of Rocky Balboa, a fictional boxer played by Sylvester Stallone, at the top of the stairs now, but it is a second casting of the original at the bottom, which remains the more popular statue. It regularly draws tourists and locals alike, and has functioned as a Philadelphia icon. France’s rocky road to the separation of Church and state

The 120th anniversary of France’s landmark law codifying the separation of Church and state was commemorated last month. The 1905 law’s ideological origin was of course the Revolution of 1789, which sought to end, through the establishment of a republic, the corruption and excessive power of the monarchs, the aristocracy and the Catholic Church. However, France wasn’t the first jurisdiction to make religious freedom a right and forbid state support for religion – the US state of Virginia was. There, the Anglican Church was established just as it was, and still is, in England. Virginia’s stance formed the template for the first amendment to the US Constitution in 1789, thanks to visionaries James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, the latter of whom devoted his life to replicating these concepts in other countries, starting with France. Now, nearly 250 years later, let’s examine what has been achieved, and what still needs to be done. In 1789 after much bloodshed, French citizens managed to form a unicameral National Assembly, which was eventually supported by Louis XVI, the aristocracy, …
