Miles, Red Garland. I mean, these pictures take me back into a time which will never be like that again. Everybody was working. Everybody was contributing. Everybody was being appreciated. Jazz was appreciated. Of course, many of these guys aren’t here anymore, and that’s emotional for me, too. Here I am, the last guy standing. And I’m sure that the habits I established around that time – healthy habits – were responsible for my good fortune. It’s hard for me to look through these pictures with anything but great feeling: Coleman Hawkins, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Heath, Pete La Roca. All these guys represent a family that’s special to me. I was lucky, because I always had a great family life with my wife at home. But these guys, you could say that they were a family, too. Rollins’ publicist Terri Hinte confirmed his death, writing that “one of the most honoured and influential figures in American music of the 20th century and beyond, died this afternoon at his home in Woodstock, NY.” No cause of death was given, but the saxophonist reportedly suffered from pulmonary fibrosis and other respiratory problems in recent years, forcing him into retirement more than a decade ago. Across a career spanning more than six decades, Rollins became celebrated for his expansive improvisations, muscular tenor saxophone sound and constant stylistic experimentation. Aaron Schwartz | Sipa | Bloomberg | Getty Images U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins sent USDA staff an Easter email that emphasized the story of Jesus being crucified and resurrected, a message that some Christians said alienated them for its overt religiosity. “Happy Easter — He is Risen indeed,” Rollins wrote in the email sent on Good Friday, which CNBC has reviewed and was first to report. “From the foot of the Cross on Good Friday to the stone rolled away from the now empty tomb, sin has been destroyed,” Rollins wrote. “Jesus has been raised from the dead. And God has granted each of us victory and new life.
