Falling rolls: Schools given ‘limited’ DfE help

Falling rolls: Schools given ‘limited’ DfE help

Schools have received “limited” government support to manage the risks of falling rolls to educational performance and value for money, the spending watchdog has warned. The National Audit Office estimated a forecast drop of 56,300 primary pupils in the system in 2027 “could mean that schools receive £288 million less in per-pupil funding”. Julia Harnden, deputy director of policy at the ASCL leaders’ union, warned there had been “no government strategy to mitigate that risk and there’s a real danger that more communities will lose schools which have been a feature of those communities for decades”. Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, the Conservative MP who chairs the Parliamentary public accounts committee, said: “It is deeply concerning that, despite pupil numbers declining since 2018, DfE has been slow to respond to the challenge and has not assessed the implications for education quality, particularly for the most disadvantaged pupils. “As pupil numbers are expected to continue to fall, DfE must make better use of its information and insights across the sector to support schools, clarify what a resilient and effective …

Google rolls out Gemini in Chrome in 7 new countries

Google announced Monday that it’s making its Gemini in Chrome feature available in seven new markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam. The company is rolling this feature out to both desktop and iOS in all of these countries except Japan. The company has been integrating AI and Gemini into Chrome in more ways since last year through a floating window. Earlier this year, the company introduced a sidebar-based assistant that would help users answer questions across tabs and utilize the Personal Intelligence feature of Gemini, which lets users connect to services like Gmail and Google Photos, for personalized answers. Users can also schedule meetings with Calendar, check location details with Maps, and draft and send emails with Gmail through this feature in Chrome. Users can also transform images on the web using Nano Banana 2 in the sidebar. Gemini in Chrome was available to U.S.-based users through the January launch, and the company expanded the availability to India, Canada, and New Zealand in March. With this launch, Gemini in …

Tesla FSD v14.3 rolls out with MLIR rewrite, 20% faster reactions

Tesla has started rolling out Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v14.3 to HW4 vehicles, and the headline change is under the hood: Tesla rewrote the AI compiler and runtime from scratch on MLIR, which the automaker says delivers a 20% faster reaction time. The update, shipping as software version 2026.2.9.6, also brings a new parking spot pin on the map, better behavior around emergency vehicles and school buses, and Tesla’s first public acknowledgement that it’s leaning on MLIR — the compiler infrastructure built by Chris Lattner, who briefly led Tesla Autopilot back in 2017. What’s new in FSD v14.3 Here are Tesla’s official release notes for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v14.3, shipping on build 2026.2.9.6 for HW4 Model S, 3, X, Y, and Cybertruck: Upgraded the Reinforcement Learning (RL) stage of training the FSD neural network, resulting in improvements in a wide variety of driving scenarios. Upgraded the neural network vision encoder, improving understanding in rare and low-visibility scenarios, strengthening 3D geometry understanding, and expanding traffic sign understanding. Rewrote the AI compiler and runtime from the ground up …

Best cinnamon rolls in Los Angeles

Best cinnamon rolls in Los Angeles

L.A.’s only dedicated cinnamon roll shop was born during the pandemic, when stay-at-home orders prevented Lindsay Sears-McDonald from going to her family’s favorite bakery to satisfy her craving for sticky sweet buns. Instead, she attempted the dessert at home. When her first try yielded delicious results, she set out to perfect the recipe. Soon, she and her husband Lawrence were popping up at events across Los Angeles, and in 2023 they nabbed a vendor spot at Smorgasburg L.A. They named their outfit All About the Cinnamon, a play on the hit song “All About the Benjamins” that features Lil’ Kim and Notorious B.I.G. The menu follows a similar theme, with plush cinnamon rolls named after the rap and R&B artists that Lindsay and Lawrence grew up listening to, such as the Em dotted with milk-chocolate M&M’s or the Busta topped with warm Nutella. Last summer the couple opened a small storefront in Sherman Oaks, complete with a mural of hip-hop greats. In pastry cases across the city, you’ll see a diverse range of sweet buns …

Watch: McDonald’s Restaurant Rolls Out Robots To Greet, Serve Customers

A McDonald’s restaurant in Shanghai is trialling a team of humanoid robots as staff, offering a glimpse into what is likely to be the future of fast-food, Digitaltrends reports. The robots, developed by Keenon Robotics, were spotted at a McDonald’s in the Shanghai Pudong New Area, where they picked up orders from customers at the front counter using a touchscreen. The video also shows children in the restaurant playfulling chasing after the animal-like robots that were greeting customers. McDonald’s has yet to issue a statement on the now-viral video of the robot, but Keenon confirmed that its robots were deployed at the location. “Watch the Keenon robot squad suit up and join the McDonald’s party,” the firm said, sharing a clip of its breakthrough technology. “Our humanoid series is leading the squad and hitting the streets,” Keenon Robotics said in a statement. “It’s a showcase of how service automation is becoming a seamless part of global dining, and how technology brings more smiles to every mealtime.” The sighting of robots at McDonald’s comes as fears …

Cuts loom at 36-school MAT after central team review failed to address funding reductions Cuts loom at 36-school MAT after central team review failed to address funding reductions More from this theme Recent articles A third of schools in a high-profile academy trust are set to make “staffing changes” as they wrestle with the falling rolls crisis. The David Ross Education Trust (DRET) is looking to make the cuts after a review of its central team failed to address the “scale of the funding reduction” caused by the fall in pupils. Bosses of the chain – which runs 36 academies across the country – stressed the changes will not impact all its schools but confirmed there will be redundancies. Central team review A trust spokesperson said: “Like many schools and trusts across the country, we are seeing the impact of the national decline in birth rates through falling pupil numbers. “Our priority remains providing a high-quality education for every pupil, while ensuring our schools are sustainable for the long term.” They added DRET has “taken …

Lendeborg Scores 25, and Midwest’s Top-Seeded Michigan Rolls to a 95-72 Win Over Saint Louis

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Yaxel Lendeborg punctuated his 25-point outing with a massive dunk in transition, and the Midwest Region’s top-seeded Michigan advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 95-72 victory over Saint Louis in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. Morez Johnson Jr. had 15 and eight rebounds for Michigan (33-3), which matched a program record for victories set during its seventh and most recent Final Four appearance in 2018. The Wolverines’ 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara had 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks to increase his season blocks total to 96, one short of matching Michigan’s single-season record set by Roy Tarpley in 1985-86. The Wolverines advanced to the round of 16 for the second consecutive year and seventh time since 2017. They’ll play the winner of Texas Tech and Alabama at Chicago on Friday. The Wolverines’ size and depth proved too much for the ninth-seeded Billikens, who dropped to 0-6 in second-round games. Michigan particularly took away the Billikens’ primary strength, their outside shooting game, limiting Saint Louis to …
