World Snooker Championship prize money: How much do the players earn at the Crucible?

World Snooker Championship prize money: How much do the players earn at the Crucible?

The 2026 World Snooker Championship will see 32 players battle for the sport’s biggest prize, with prestige and plenty of money on the line at the Crucible Theatre. Every player in the main draw will win at least £20,000, and the winner of the tournament will take home a cheque for half a million pounds – not bad for two weeks’ work. The total prize pot this year is £2,395,000, and as well as payouts for finishing positions there are also bonuses on offer for the highest break and any maximum break achieved during the tournament. Those bonuses already have a potential winner, however, after China’s Chang Bingyu hit a 147 break in qualifying. He stands to win £172,000 for the feat – despite failing to qualify for the main draw – although that prize will be shared if someone else pulls off a maximum during the tournament itself. Ronnie O’Sullivan is well out in front for the most money earned in snooker history with total winnings in excess of £15m, but the 50-year-old’s return …

“Today I think there was more pressure,” Zhao said. “I know Ding didn’t play very well in the last session but the pressure is very big. This year I just don’t want to lose any match so it feels very different.” Judd Trump, the world No 1, inched closer to booking his place in the quarter-finals after establishing a 9-7 overnight lead in a pulsating contest against Iran’s Hossein Vafaei. Resuming at 4-4, Trump struggled to get into his stride as his inspired opponent edged 7-6 in front, but Trump responded brilliantly, a century followed by further breaks of 74 and 94 seeing him end their second session with a precious advantage. Neil Robertson took advantage of a controversial moment in the 14th frame of his clash with Chris Wakelin to move four clear at 10-6 ahead of Monday’s conclusion. Wakelin was well in the ascendency when he potted a long red, but a foul was called by referee Peggy Li, who noticed him feather the yellow ball in the process. Wakelin clearly did not …

Ronnie O’Sullivan shows touch of ‘evil’ to dominate John Higgins

Welcome to live coverage of the snooker World Championship from The Telegraph as Ronnie O’Sullivan takes on John Higgins in the second round. The pair meet in the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield as they meet for the first time in over two years. The match-up saw O’Sullivan a 4-0 winner against the Scottish former world No. 1 at the World Masters, but this best-of-25 is not so likely to be as one-sided. Both are now veterans of the sport, amongst a handful of players who have won each of the Triple Crown events. At 50, O’Sullivan is back in contention for his eighth world championship. With seven under his belt in his career so far, he currently shares the record of seven with former foe Stephen Hendry, though the pair now have a far warmer relationship. Higgins and O’Sullivan have a competitive rivalry going back to October 1994, when Higgins secured his own whitewash, a 5-0 win at the Grand Prix. O’Sullivan has been missing from several high profile fixtures over the last season, preferring …

Ronnie O’Sullivan has taken a giant step towards a mouth-watering second round match against fellow 50-year-old John Higgins with a highly impressive start to his quest for an eighth world snooker title. Despite initially heading for the wrong table on his return to the Crucible, O’Sullivan looked instantly back at home following a mixed season spent largely outside of England that has contained recent hints of a return to form. O’Sullivan raced to a 5-0 lead before sharing the final four frames of the opening session of his first round match against China’s He Guoqiang to lead 7-2 ahead of the conclusion on Wednesday afternoon. Although O’Sullivan did reach the semi-final last year, he looked bereft of confidence with what was a new cue before being comprehensively outplayed by the eventual winner Zhao Xintong. Despite another year and a few more grey hairs, it was instantly obvious that O’Sullivan arrives in Sheffield this year rather happier with both his form and chances of moving clear of Stephen Hendry to become the only eight-times world champion …
